## Prepared bv Cikgu Shandini ( April 2016 )

1. Diagram 1 shows the positions of three different liquids R, S and T in a gas jar. Table 1 shows
their densities respectively.

## a) In Diagram 1, label liquids R, S and T. (1m)

b) If substance P which is put into the gas jar floats on liquids R but sinks in liquid T, predict the
density of substance P. (1m)

c) State what will happen to substance Y with a density of 11.4 gcm 3 when it is put into the gas
jar. (1m)

d) Diagram 1.1 shows that liquid X sinks in water when it is poured into it.

## ii)If liquid Y is metallic element at room temperature, what is liquid Y ? (1m)

e) In diagram 1.2 (a), a lump of plasticine sinks in water but a model made from the same lump
of plasticine floats on water shown in diagram 1.2 (b)

i) Why does the lump of plasticine in Diagram 1.2 (a) sink ? (1m)

ii) How can the same lump of plasticine be made float on water?(1m)

iii) Explain how submarine rises to the surface of the sea from the bottom. (1m)

## iv) Explain a method used to float a sunken ship. ( 2m)

2a ) Diagram 2.1 shows activities that produce a type of energy. State the type of energy
produced by all the activities. ( 1m)

## iii) What happens to the candle particles during process P? (1m)

b) Explain what happens to the water particles when water is put in the freezer to form ice cubes.
(2m)

3a) Diagram 3.1 shows a thermometer used in a laboratory. What happens to the mercury when
the bulb is placed in hot water? (1m)

b) Diagram 3.2 shows the condition of a bimetallic strip in a heating process. Why does the
bimetallic strip bend when heated? (1m)

## c) Diagram 3.3 shows a fire alarm system.

i) When there is a fire, the bimetallic strip bends. Draw an arrow in the box provided in diagram
to show the direction of the bending of the strip.(1m)

ii) Explain how the fire alarm works when the bimetallic strip is heated. (2m)

d. Diagram 3.4 shows a method to remove a very tight metal cap of a bottle. Why do we use hot
water to remove the tight metal cap easily? (1m)

## ii) Give one reason for the answer in 3 e i) (1m)

5. The rear window of the car in diagram contains a heating element. The heating element is a
part of an electrical circuit connected to the battery of the car.

a. Diagram below show the two possible ways of connecting the circuit of the heating element.
State the name of each type of circuit. (2m)

b. The heating element is broken at point X on circuit P and at point Y on circuit Q as shown in
diagram below. When the switch is closed, which circuit is still functioning and give your reason.
(2m)

c. During winter, ice may form at the rear window of the car. When the heating element is
switched on, the ice will melt and the surface of the rear window will become clear and dry.
Complete the following sentences.
i. When the heater is switched one, .. energy is transferred from the wires to the
rear window of the car. (1m)
ii) As the window of the car becomes clear and dry, physical changes of the matter occur. The
changes occur from .. state to . State. (2m)

## Ai) Name the type of circuit. ( 1m)

ii) State the brightness of bulb L when the crocodile clip is moved from R to Q. Give a reason for

## iii) What happens to bulb M is bulb L is burnt out. ( 1m)

b. Diagram 6.2 below shows a complete electric circuit. Calculate the total resistance of this
circuit. (2m)

## ii) What is the voltage of V1 if the voltage of V is 3 volts. (1m)

iii) Explain why this type of circuit is used in our houses. (2m)
