TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION
Since ancient times, people all over the world have been holdings feasts, dances,
singing, and other merry-making activities in thanksgiving and celebration of good
harvests. And, since the Philippines are also a festival country, every province in every
region finds a reason to celebrate almost everything from the religious feasts to
customary traditions, to just about anything that can be celebrated. There are the angus
Festival of Dagupan; the Flower Festival of Panagbenga in the countrys summer capital,
Baguio; the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila, Ati-atihan in Kalibo, Aklan,
Sinulog in Cebu City, Moriones Festival in Marinduque, Turumba in Pakil, Laguna,
Santacruzan nationwide, Carabao Festival in Angono, Rizal, Independence Day in Kawit,
Cavite and many more.
But, one of the most well-known harvest festivals is held annually in Lucban,
Quezon Province. It is called the Pahiyas Festival, which is celebrated every 15th day of
the hot summer month of May. This festival, believed to be one of the Philippines' most
extravagant and most colorful, is held in honor of San Isidro Labrador and is the farmers'

classic Tagalog farming town sitting on the foothills of the sacred Mount Banahaw. This
upland town is three to four hours south of the country's capital, Manila. It is located in
Quezon, one of the largest provinces in the Philippines in terms of land area. It is a
municipality with idyllic and traditional Southern Tagalog scenery, with narrow roads, a

provincial charm with rolling and green farmlands in the background, and a considerable
number of Spanish-era structures.
Festivals abounding the country besides being fun, well-managed festivals and
events offer a host of economic and social benefits to communities (GramesandVitcenda,
2012). The benefits are similar to those for tourism, in general, tourism has the
opportunity to bring communities together and instill a sense of community pride and
knowledge of their history. The economic benefits of festivals are easiest to see and most
often citedfestivals attract visitors, which stimulates the growth of tourism and other
businesses in a town or region. The social benefits of festivals are less visible, but they
are just as important. It is fair to say that festivals foster community pride, teach people
new things, and strengthen relationships. But hosting festivals also poses challenges.
There are risks and costs related to the effort. A star performer might not show up, or the
stage might collapse. Insurance can cover financial risk, but reputational damage is
harder to address.
By definition, festivals attract visitors. And visitors spend money, which boosts the
local economy both on and off the festival site. On-site spending includes admission fees,
parking fees, food, beverage and souvenir salesand more. But off-site spending related
to festivals generates revenue for communities, too. For example, visitors stop at local
gas stations, souvenir shops, and restaurantsthe list goes on. Overnight visitors provide
another source of off-site revenue to communities that host festivals. Festivals also
provide free marketing and advertising for local businesses as visitors talk about their fun
experiences when they go back home. If visitors post comments and photos about their
experiences on Facebook or other social media it is much the better. The economic

3
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
benefits of successful festivals ripple throughout a local economyaffecting tourism and
non-tourism- related businesses alike. Planning and conducting festivals involves many
members of the community, which yields a number of social benefits.
According to the Local Tourism Office Lucban, Quezon. The event has been
growing every year due in part to the promotion of the local government. During this
festival there are some problems encountered. There has been decline in the number of
visitors and tourists in some previous years. One reason Lucban is quiet far about 4-5
hours drive from the city. The town has a narrow roads therefore, traffic were
everywhere. There was lack of consensus on the security because there are no parking
spaces for people from the places and parking space is too far from the town proper of
Lucban. Since the town proper is small in area. There are limited parking spaces within
the town proper, there is no specific area for people to rest after roaming around the street
of Lucban, hotels and accommodation is not enough to accommodate large number of
people during the festivals.

Background of the Study

Pahiyas Festival is celebrated during the month of May in honor of San Isidro
Labrador (the patron saint of farmers and laborers). Pahiyas Festival comes from the
Filipino term "hiyas which literally means "jewel/decor" and the people of Lucban
showcases colorful and decorated street houses embellish with harvested fruits, crops,
vegetables, handicrafts, kiping (leaf-improvised with colorful wafers) and all agricultural
products only found in Lucban, Quezon. The good harvest every year is the reason why

4
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
Lucban has been celebrating the festival and it continues and become a stronger devotion
to their patron saint.
On May 15, there will be a morning mass then to be followed with San Isidro
Procession. Tourists can expect grand parade of colorful floats, marching bands, street
dancers, art and photo exhibit, concerts, etc. during the whole day event. The awarding of
best Pahiyas Festival House Design and Decors will be scheduled in the afternoon.
Extravagant fireworks and exciting band performances will be held at night.
The participants for best Pahiyas Festival House Design and Decors are decorated
with kiping. It is made from ground rice flour, which shaped like real leaves or other leaf
forms and colored in red, yellow, green, orange and other bright shades. Do not forget to
try the famous pancit habhab and local sausage of Quezon, the Longganisang Lucban.
Each house tries to outdo each other in decorations in an annual competition as they vie
for the honor of being recognized for their creativity. After the competition is over and
the awards are handed over to the owners of the winning house, the decorations of the
house will be thrown away to the huge flock of people as free treats. For the other houses,
after the festival, those kipings that were used as decorations are cooked and eaten as rice
chips. Also during the festival, the people display their harvest in front of their homes so
that the parish priest can bless them as the procession passes by the researchers.
During this festival there are some problems encountered. There were traffic
everywhere because of the narrow roads and streets. Parking space was too far from town
proper. Accommodation was not enough for large number of people. There are no
beaches or huge malls present in Lucban. But there are more visitors or tourists regularly
visiting Lucban. Aside from the full of charm of the town, the Pahiyas Festival attracts

5
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
them more. The researchers become curious what are the factors make those people to
visit Lucban during this festival. There is an idea of what are those things make them
satisfied and if there are any problems encountered by them, motivated the researchers to
make this study.

6
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
Scope and Limitation
The study focused on the present activities used in holding the festival, including
the activities including the activities such as street dancing/grand parade, trade fair
(tiyangge), cooking contest, cultural shows, and beauty pageant in the festival days.
Descriptive method of research was used by the researchers. To gather the data needed
in the study, the researchers designed a structured type of questionnaires. Data
gathering was conducted in the last week of June up to September 2015 in Lucban,
Quezon. There were 100 respondents chosen to participate. These are the people of
Lucban, in the municipal building, tourism office, neighbor, relatives and classmates.
The researcher asked the respondents if they attended the Pahiyas festival 2015 before
conducted was done. The simple percentage and weighted mean method of statistics
were used.
Significance of the Study
This study aims to improve the tourism impact of the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban,
Quezon and hopefully present tangible factors, facts and information through research.
For the Tourism Department of Lucban. The study will enlighten them on what
activities will be included and how they will be actually done so that the festival will be
more exciting and will attract more tourists and visitors. Consequently, it would give
them an overview of the practices done in the past and compare it with the present so that
they can benchmark or level up with the standards and make the even more exhilarating.
Through this they can come up with a program of activities that best showcase the culture
of the locality.

7
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
For the Pahiyas Festival Organizers. The study would update them on the
prevailing activities and they can update whatever program they may have to suit the
present situations and visitors. They can plan such activities so that they can impart
information as well as help in promoting the local tourism and help the economic
endeavors of the municipality.
For tourists and guests. The study would enable them to get a better understanding
of the different aspects of tourism in Lucban, and take advantage of the offering of the
local tourism board in activities related to the festival.
For the Businessmen. This study will give an opportunity for them to improve
their facilities and products so that tourists will encourage more to patronize them.
For the Farmers. The study will motivate the local farmers to develop a method on
how to cultivate or produce new products that will be used in decorating during Pahiyas
Festival.
HRM/Tourism students. The study can help them in their lessons especially
showcasing local activities and festivals so that they can gain knowledge and use them
later as they became part of the industry after graduating.
To future researchers. The study would give a baseline data that may serve as
reference material for those who have intentions to make further studies related to this.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter tackles the literature and studies that are relevant to the present
studies focal point and evaluate the Pahiyas Festival and its related activities.
Festivals
Festivals are fun activities - we go to meet up with friends and family, escape the
hum drum of daily life, and to be exposed to new cultural forms or simply to be
entertained. Given that many festivals, even at the local level, can involve thousands of
attendees these requirements bring with them the potential for negative environmental
impacts. A festival or gala is an event ordinarily staged by a community, centering on and
celebrating some unique aspect of that community and its traditions, often marked as a
local or national holiday, mela or eid(Picard and Robinson, 2006).
According to Randy V. Urlanda and Donald C. Tapan Festival Philippines: A
guide to the countrys colorful festivities 2007, festivals often serve to meet specific
purposes, especially in regard to commemoration and/or thanksgiving. They are
associated with celebration and may also provide entertainment, which was particularly
important to local communities before the advent of mass-produced entertainment. These
celebrations offered a sense of belonging for religious, social, or geographical groups.
Festivals that focus on cultural or specifically ethnic topics also seek to inform members
of their traditions and the involvement of community elders sharing stories and
experience provides a means for unity among families.

10
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
A festival is a special occasion of feasting or celebration, usually with a religious
focus (OED Online, March 2014). Asisde from religion, and sometimes folklore, another
significant origin is agricultural. Food (and consequently agriculture) is so vital that many
festivals are associated with harvest time. Religious commemoration and thanksgiving
for good harvests are blended in events that take place in autumn such as Halloween in
the northern hemisphere and Easter in the southern (Picard and Robinson, 2006).
The word "festival" was originally used as an adjective from the late fourteenth
century, deriving from Latin via Old French. In Middle English, a "festival dai" was a
religious holiday. Its first recorded used as a noun was in 1589 (as "Festifall") (OED
Online, March 2014). Feast first came into usage as a noun circa 1200, and its first
recorded use as a verb was circa 1300. The term "feast" is also used in
common secular parlance as a synonym for any large or elaborate meal. When used as in
the meaning of a festival, most often refers to a religious festival rather than a film or art
festival. In the Philippines and many other former Spanish colonies, the Spanish
word fiesta is used to denote a communal religious feast to honor a patron saint.
Many festivals have religious origins and entwine cultural and religious
significance in traditional activities (OED Online, March 2014). The most important
religious festivals such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali and Eid al-Adha serve to mark
out the year. Others, such as harvest festivals, celebrate seasonal change. Events of
historical significance, such as important military victories or other nation-building
events also provide the impetus for a festival. An early example is the festival established
by Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Rameses III celebrating his victory over the Libyans. In

11
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
many countries, royal holidays commemorate dynastic events just as agricultural holidays
are about harvests. Festivals are often commemorated annually.
According to Randy V. Urlanda and Donald C. Tapan Festival Philippines: A
guide to the countrys colorful festivities 2007, there are numerous types of festivals in
the world and most countries celebrate important events or traditions with traditional
cultural events and activities. Most culminate in the consumption of specially prepared
food (showing the connection to "feasting") and they bring people together. Festivals are
also strongly associated with national holidays. Lists of national festivals are published to
make participation easier.
The Pahiyas Festival
According to David Dalton The Rough Guide to the Philippines (2013),
Pahiyas is the time when people in Lucban, Quezon give thanks to San Isidro Labrador
for a good harvest. The festival's name comes from the Filipino terms hiyas (jewel)
and Pahiyas (precious offering). This feast is an ancient farmers' harvest celebration that
dates back to the 16th century. According to legend, San Isidro Labrador magically
plowed the field whenever he went out of the church. This is the story that the Spaniards
passed on to the Philippines from Mexico during their colonial period. Since then, the
Pahiyas Festival has been a source of excitement for the locals and visitors of Quezon
Province.
The feast of San Isidro Labrador was first celebrated by the people of Lucban at
the time the Spaniards were still spreading Christianity in the 1500s. The early residents
of Lucban celebrated the feast through a simple offering to the anito (pagan god)

12
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
asking for a bountiful harvest. During harvest season, the farmers would gather their
crops inside a small worship place where they would eat together and drink a kind of
coconut wine. The locals believe that in having this kind of celebration and merrymaking, they would be blessed with another bountiful harvest during the following
season. (http://www.tourism.gov.ph/sitepages/FestivitiesList.aspx?
festivityCode=303&monthCode=05)
During the 1630s, under the leadership of Chief Lukas Martin and Fr. Alfonso de
San Miguel, the first Catholic Church was built and the people of Lucban learned to
embrace and incorporate Christian faith into their daily lives. When harvest time came,
the farmers would pick their finest crops and take them to the much bigger church
where the parish priest would bless them in thanksgiving to God and Jesus Christ. This
practice or ritual assures farmers of bountiful harvests year after year after
year. (http://www.pinoyadventurista.com/2015/03/pahiyas-festival-2015-schedule-ofactivities-lucban-quezon.html)
According to legend, which was passed on by the Spaniards to the Filipinos from
Mexico during the Spanish colonization era, white oxen would magically plow and tend
to San Isidro's field whenever he went to church. San Isidro was Mexico's patron saint
of agriculture, venerated and called upon by the people for an abundant supply of water
as well as a fertile land. The good harvests enjoyed by the farmers of Lucban make
stronger their devotion to San Isidro Labrador
The highlight of the festival is a procession along the streets of the image of San
Isidro Labrador, to ensure the people's bountiful harvest in the coming seasons. The
procession features a pair of giant papier-mch figures of a farmer and his wife. This is

13

followed by the image of the patron saint and his wife Sta. Maria de la Cabeza, who
carries a basket with triangulo biscuits, which are given to the children during the
procession. This culminates with generous sharing of food among the townspeople.
All the locals' houses are decorated with agricultural harvest (fruits, vegetables,
rice grains, rice stalks, flowers, and ferns) and colorful rice wafers, called kiping. These
thin wafers made from rice dough are usually arranged into two or three layers of
chandeliers called Aranya. The locals use different kinds of leaves to add flavor and color
to the kipping. They also produce varieties of tastes and textures by using different
ingredients such as kabal, coffee, talisay (umbrella tree), cocoa, and banaba leaves. When
the festival is over, these kipping are cooked and eaten as rice chips. Fruits, grain,
vegetables, and woven palm hats are used as decorations. In the afternoon, San Isidro
Labrador's image is carried across town in a procession to assure farmers of more

Street Dance/ Grand Parade
Street Dance refers to any dance that evolved outside of dance studios as part of
some urbanized culture. The first dance to known as a street dance it was based off, such
as Clogging and Zapateo. Clogging and Tap evolved just as the industrial revolution at
the time was at its peak and the hard working staff needed to get away from it all,
dance was one solution. These dances evolved during a time when urban world was
starting to become highly occupied by early technology such as mechanical devices, etc.
Clogging, in particular could be said to have had evolved during the early 18 th century
within the Netherlands as a reaction to the popularity of clog shoes at the time. However,
it didnt become its own dance until a few decades later, when British cotton mill workers
began dancing in clogs in order to create their very own percussion (with or without
music being played, fiddles were a favored instrument by many). The Clog dancing
resembled the Irish Jig that had seemed to have had evolved out of pagan folk culture.
The Clog later evolved into pseudo Tap Dance. Tap is a street dance that evolved amongst
the Afro-American industrial slaves during the early 19th century, but evolved into
several dances when it became the first street dance to be absorbed into mainstream
culture. As slavery began to decline, Tap split into two: commercial and traditional.
The commercial form of Tap was a non-street dance product that blended the
early form of Tap with new or old commercial dance forms. Traditional tap was also very
popular and eventually became a performance dance just like its commercial version,
however traditional tap had always stayed pretty much the same over time. Another
example of a street dance is house dance, which is prominently danced to house music.

16
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
House dance evolved out of Chicago clubs but grew and developed in the clubs of New
York. Due to the modern mainstream popularity of clubs, street and fad dances tend to
evolve more often in nightclubs rather than outdoor spaces. However, they may be
practiced in outdoor spaces. Many dances are also street dances. The majority of rave
dances are street dance styles since rave culture is prominently an underground
movement.

and-festivities/)
Traditional jazz dance, having existed since the late nineteenth century, is perhaps
one of the oldest street dances of urban America. Street dance is often considered
urban folk dance. Since many concepts of urbanization have existed for a long time back
in history, the point of which folk dance is to be considered a more historical street dance
is often broad and unknown. Street dance and folk dance are distinguished by when the
terms were introduced for, the term 'street dance' as a compound noun has been believed
to have existed since the beginning of the early 20th century, whereby Afro-American
vernacular dance was becoming the most popular in the western world. Clogging is
thought to be considered a very early form of street dance, since it evolved in the streets,
factories and dance parties during the 18th century (or before) amongst dancers that were
considered a part of the UK, Western Europe and Appalachian urban countercultures at
the time. (Source: https://streetdanceinfo.wordpress.com/2010/09/03/the-evolution-ofstreetdance/)
According to Emma Torrington Master This: Street Dance 2011, ever since
funk styles, Afro-American dancing has been very much articulate and revolved around
gently or jerky popping movements. In fact, theres a dance entirely composed of such

17
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
pops, hits and ticks. That dance style is referring to exactly its description popping.
However, unlike locking, popping involved harder, more robotic, muscular popping.
After the popularity of funk and disco was taking hand, a new style of music was being
developed during the 70s, called hip hop. Hip hop was music involved the looping of
funk, soul and jazz breakbeats and drum solos on a turntable. DJ KoolKerc pioneered this
method, and it was known simply as hip hop. Hip hop was the lower class version of
the funk and disco movements. It was only a short while before Afro-American poets
started to introduce chants and ultimately, spoken, rhythmic passages to the music. In
summary, a street dance is really any contemporary vernacular dance style that evolved
alongside a specific form of music rather than a racial unit. Older vernacular dances are
not usually referred to as street dances, and they usually evolve alongside a racial
community. Street dance seems to have become a craze worldwide, and the fact this each
of these vernacular dance styles isnt limited racially, they are practiced by many
worldwide.
A float is a decorated platform, either built on a vehicle or towed behind one,
which is a component of many festive parades, such as those of Mardi Gras in New
Orleans, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Key West Fantasy Fest parade,
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, and the Tournament of Roses Parade. For the Tournament of
Roses Parade, floats are decorated entirely in flowers. Parade floats were first introduced
in the middle ages when churches used pageant wagons as movable scenery for passion
plays. (http://www.madehow.com/Volume-4/Parade-Float.html)
The traditional pastime of parades fills us with excitement and a sense of
nostalgia. Who can pass up a Thanksgiving Day or Mardi Gras celebration parade?

18
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
People stand curbside and cheer as the procession of high school bands, enormous floats
and actors and politicians pass by the crowd. No matter what kind of entertaining parade
you enjoy, the parades seem to outdo themselves in fun, excitement and visual spectacles
every year. Parades also symbolize an integral part of human culture and history.(http,
http://www.unc.edu/~mlfagan/comp101/assignment3/index.html)
The origin of the parade has its roots in the military and politics. Generations of
rulers have projected their power through displays of strength and trepidation, going back
to humanitys first civilizations.
Mesopotamian rulers decorated their buildings with illustrations depicting their
conquests. Often the pictures depicted the ruler walking on the head of his conquered
enemies in front of his army. The actions, designed to lift the monarchs prestige,
cemented his legitimacy as a ruler. Later parades functioned as broad podiums that
connected the ruler to his audience and allowed him to spread his authority as he made
his way through the crowds. (http://www.stepsdancestudio.ph/street.html)
Religious authorities and organizations used parades in much the same way as the
military and politicians did before them. The parade offered a large platform for them to
connect with the community and foster power. The public enjoyed the parades since they
got a chance to be close to the powerful members of society who passed. Parades, and
parade floats, are expected to remain an important part of celebrations. The floats are
expected to become more elaborate and technically sophisticated as builders and sponsors
vie for the attention of a worldwide audience. In the Rose Parade, the floral aspect of
each float will become more important, as builders search the world for new and unusual
floral effects. During the Pahiyas Festival, the float consists of vehicle decorated with

Trade Fair/ Tiyangge
A trade fair (trade show, trade exhibition or expo) is an exhibition organized so
that companies in a specific industry can showcase and demonstrate their latest products,
service, study activities of rivals and examine recent market trends and opportunities. In
contrast to consumer fairs, only some trade fairs are open to the public, while others can
only be attended by company representatives (members of the trade, e.g. professionals)
and members of the press, therefore trade shows are classified as either "Public" or
"Trade Only". A few fairs are hybrids of the two; one example is the Frankfurt Book Fair,
which is trade-only for its first three days and open to the general public on its final two
days. They are held on a continuing basis in virtually all markets and normally attract
companies from around the globe. For example, in the U.S. there are currently over
10,000 trade shows held every year, and several online directories have been established
to

help

organizers,

attendees,

and

marketers

identify

appropriate

events.

According to Ruth P. Stevens Trade shows and Event Marketing: Plan, Promote
& Profit 2005, trade fairs often involve a considerable marketing investment by
participating companies. Costs include space rental, design and construction of trade
show displays, telecommunications and networking, travel, accommodations, and
promotional literature and items to give to attendees. In addition, costs are incurred at the
show for services such as electrical, booth cleaning, internet services, and drayage (also

20
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
known as material handling). Consequently, cities often promote trade shows as a means
of economic development. Exhibitors attending the event are required to use an exhibitor
manual or online exhibitor manual to order their required services and complete any
necessary paperwork such as health and safety declarations. An increasing number of
trade fairs are happening online, and these events are called virtual tradeshows. They are
increasing in popularity due to their relatively low cost and because there is no need to
travel whether you are attending or exhibiting.
A fair (archaic: faire or fayre) is a gathering of people for a variety of
entertainment or commercial activities. It is normally of the essence of a fair that it is
temporary with scheduled times lasting from an afternoon to several weeks. Variations of
fairs include trade fair, street fair, agricultural show, fte, county fair, exhibition or
state, festival, traveling carnival or funfair. Fairs can include exhibitions of animals, and

Tiyanggians (bargain shopping stalls / bazaars) were also everywhere around this

chains, t-shirts, toys, hats and even Henna Tattoos. I ended up buying a mug with a

Cooking contest
According to Andrew F. Smith The Oxford Companion to American Food and
Drink 2007, cooking contest are an American pastime, annually attracting thousands of
participants. The culinary equivalent of sporting events, they fall into three categories;
those held as part of fairs and festivals; those sponsored by food manufacturers as
promotional events, such as the Pillsbury Bake-off Contest; and those that celebrate
distinctive, all-American foods. Many cooking contests feature monetary prizes, while
others benefit charity. The most famous American cook-offs include several state fair and
food festival cooking competitions and major-league events like the Pillsbury Bake-off
Contest ad barbeque and chili competitions.
Cooking and recipe contests are more popular than ever. Food and social trends,
fuelled by foodie TV and social media, are fostering explosive growth in cooking
contest participation. New contest twists pay homage to virtually every type of food
grown or raised in the U.S., while creating opportunities for consumers to interact with
farmers and agriculture. For more than two centuries, county and state fairs, and local or
town cooking and recipe contests have showcased the best local cooks and locally grown
food. Whether canned goods from home-grown tomatoes; pies from fresh, locally grown
fruits and berries; homemade cakes; or favorite entrees, cooking and recipe contests have
almost always exposed consumers to the best that U.S. agriculture has to offer. For many
years, cooking and recipe contests were mostly in the domain of women. Beginning in
the early 1900s, Cooperative Extension provided home economists to teach household
management skills to women, while fostering technical and education for boys and men.
Thousands of newly formed 4-H clubs restricted girls to canning, sewing and baking. At

22
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
the same time, Extension enhanced county and state fairs as agricultural forums. Field
crop and animal husbandry exhibitions showcased the accomplishments of boys and men.
Cooking and recipe contests showcased the work of girls and women.
Interest in fair contests dwindled in the 1970s and 80s, perhaps due to declining
farm numbers, a trend away from home cooking and a major societal shift away from
traditional gender roles. Now, interest is growing again, thanks to renewed consumer
interest in food, highly rated TV cooking contest shows, social media and farming
groups. Social media helps educate contestants and observers about farm-grown foods.
And the Web now makes finding and entering contests much easier. The focus of 4-H
contests has also changed drastically. Early 1900s gender roles are gone.
According to Harva Hachten et al The Flavor of Wisconsin second edition
2009, cooking and recipe contests have been going on for many years, origins dating
back into the 1800s and probably earlier. In October 1873, a novel idea was introduced at
a county fair they held a cooking contest for the young ladies of Rome, Georgia and the
neighboring towns. This was something new and exciting for these young women and
yes, being 1873, men were not included in this contest to demonstrate cooking ability,
and rather this was preserved for the younger, unmarried ladies to show off their skills in
the kitchen. In this contest of the 1870s, the women who produced the best meat and
vegetable dinner won a cooking stove or cash prize. Similar to the way cooking contests
are often judged today, the best dinners were decided based on taste and appearance, as
selected by the judges.

Cultural show
Cultural show is a program showing the culture of a particular group, country,
or society. It is an improved understanding of ethnic and cultural diversity.
Countries in the world have their own cultures made more colorful, beautiful and
vibrant because of Folk Dances that are reflection of who they are. In the east, the
Chinese have their symbolic Dragon Dance; the Japanese have the ancestral dance Bon
Odori. In the west the Americans have their Square Dance. On the other hand, the
Philippines will not be left behind. "The Pearl of The Orient" boasts of a variety of
Filipino Folk Dances.(http://philippinesculturalfolkdances.blogspot.com/)
According toGerard Delanty et al Festivals and The Cultural public sphere
2011, the Philippines consist of 7107 islands, and is broken down in three groups of
islands. The Luzon, Mindanao, and Visayas. Each of these regions contains different
languages, history, religion, and traditions. With each region having different influence in
their arts, crafts, and ancestorica dances. Lets take a trip through each region and explore
the different styles, costumes, Dances and Talents from Each Region. As we explore each
of the regions and styles, please remember a lot of these Cultural and Folk dances
represents hardships and daily back breaking tasks, thathave turned into art form. Many

of the dances you will read about here were actual activities or chores that the Filipino
endured to survive the poor economy and state of the nation.
Luzon consists of tribes such as Ifugao, Benquet, Kalinga, Bontoc, Apayo, and
Kalinga, sometimes these are calling Igorot. But sometimes that is considered
degrading." Cordillerea name also used for some parts the Luzon Region. The cultural
dances of Luzon are Idaw, Banga, Idudu and Ragsaksakan.
Mindanao is the southern most regions of The Philippines. Being the second
largest island in the Philippines, its Culture consists of mostly Muslim or Moro" people,
also composed of other ethnic groups such as the Maranao, Tausug, Banguingui, and
indigenous tribes known as Lumad. You will see a lot of Arabian, and Middle Eastern
influence in thier costumes and dances. The cultural dancing of Mindanao are Singkil,
KiniKini, Pangalay and Asik.
Visayas is the Central Island of the Philippines. Visayas is also broken down into
three sections: Central, Eastern, and Western. Many others tribes from around
surrounding island would come after the downfall or break up of their tribes. Visayas
became a melting pot for many different Tribes and Cultural backgrounds. You will find
Arbian, Spanish, and some Western influences in the dances of this region. You will see
that the dances of the Visayas are more upbeat and exciting, not so much in Drama and
tribal meanings as other regions. The cultural dances of Visayas are Sayaw saBanko,
Tinikling, Subli and Maglalatik.
Lucbanins are very talented people especially in the field of music, visual arts,
performing arts and literature. During the fiestas and Pahiyas, these talents are showcased
through cultural shows and at the same time promote Filipino culture and tradition.

Cultural dances are so precious to many civilizations, as they often contain pieces
of their history and livelihood that would otherwise be lost. The American Indians are an
example of this, as many tribes have looked to dance in the past as a way to convey joy,
mourning, and even times of battle and war. The same is true at the roots of many people
groups, as dance is a common language that unites us all.

Beauty Pageants
A beauty pageant is a competition that has traditionally focused on judging and
ranking the physical attributes of the contestants, although some contests have evolved to
also incorporate personality, intelligence, talent, and answers to judges' questions as
judged criteria. The term almost invariably refers only to contests for women and girls;
with similar events for men or boys being called by other names and is more likely to be
bodybuilding contests.(:http://www.theinfolist.com/html/en/beauty_contest.html)

According toNoel MerinoBeauty pageants 2009, contests to determine "who is

the fairest of them all" have been around at least since ancient Greece and the Judgment
of Paris. According to legend, a poor mortal goatherd, Alexandros (Paris), was called
upon to settle a dispute among the goddesses. Who was the most beautiful: Hera (Juno),
Aphrodite (Venus), or Athena (Minerva)? All three goddesses offered bribes: according to
the writer Apollodorus, "Hera said that if she were preferred to all women, she would
give him the kingdom over all men; and Athena promised victory in war, and Aphrodite

27
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
the hand of Helen." When Paris selected Aphrodite in exchange for getting Helen of Troy,
the most beautiful mortal of the time, he inadvertently started the Trojan War. While
ancient Greeks memorialized in myth the complicated relationship between beauty and
competition, there is no historical evidence that they actually held contests for women. A
"contest of physique" called the euandria was held yearly at an Athenian festival -- but
the contest was for men. European festivals dating to the medieval era provide the most
direct lineage for beauty pageants. For example, English May Day celebrations always
involved the selection of queens.
A winner of a beauty contest is often called a Beauty Queen. Child beauty
pageants mainly focus on beauty, gowns, sportswear modeling, talent, and personal
interviews. Adult and teen pageants focus on makeup, hair and gowns, swimsuit
modeling, and personal interviews. Possible awards include titles, tiaras or crowns,
sashes, savings bonds, scholarships, and cash prizes. However adult and teen pageants
have been moving more towards judging speaking, and many no longer contain swimsuit
or talent sections. (:http://www.theinfolist.com/html/en/beauty_contest.html)
Subject to community standards, the organizers of each pageant may determine
the rules of the competition, including the age range of contestants. The rules may also
require the contestants to be unmarried, and be "virtuous", be "amateur", and be available
for promotions, besides other criteria. It may also set the clothing standards in which
contestants

Problems encountered by the tourists regarding the festival activities

According to the Local Tourism Office Lucban,Quezon.
Some comments in a festival runs like Days without food and water, Scorching
temperatures and Difficulty finding shelter. Sound like a life or death situation? Well it
sort of is, because you're attending a music festival. While festivals can be an insane
party with 60,000 of your best friends, they can also become a living hell of sweat, grime

As the city gears up for the festivities in the coming months, many people are
dreading the inevitable surge in decibel levels. Studies underline that Mumbai is at its
noisiest during festivals, be it DahiHandi, Ganeshotsav or Navratri. The problem peaks
during Diwali, causing insidious health risks. The issue of noise pollution was recently
highlighted again when the Bombay high court, hearing a PIL, directed the police to
remove loudspeakers from those mosques in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai that have not
obtained required permissions. "It is never a matter of religion. The use of loudspeakers,
even during Ganeshotsav and Navratri, should be allowed only within permissible
limits," the petitioner, SantoshPachalag, told TOI. Last year, the city had celebrated its
noisiest Ganeshotsav in nearly a decade, with decibel levels on the final immersion day
soaring at Worli Naka to 123dB, way above the permissible limit of 45dB for residential
areas. Fearful that noise levels may go higher this year during the festival period, activists
demand enforcement of rules. (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Enforcerules-to-curb-noise-pollution-during-festival-period-urgeactivists/articleshow/39586464.cms)

METHODOLOGY

The chapter presented the locale of the study, research design, respondents of the
study, data gathering instrument, data gathering procedure and the statistical treatment
needed.
Locale of the Study
The study was conducted in Lucban, Quezon, famous for its annual Pahiyas
Festival, held every May 15 in honor of St Isidore, the Laborer and Farmer. The
Municipality of Lucban is a second-class municipality in the province of Quezon and an
area of 130.46 km2 (50.37 sq mi). It is located at the foot of Mount Banahaw and is
politically subdivided into 32 barangays with Mayor Celso Olivier T. Datorand Vice
Mayor Ayelah B. Deveza at the helm.

32
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
Research Design
The study used the descriptive type/method which secured evidences concerning
existing situations or current conditions, hence, the method is very appropriate because of
the nature of the problems being sought were mostly that of finding evidences. This
method was used because the nature of the study needed primary data. Data gathering,
tabulation, analysis, and interpretation of the data gathered were done afterwards. In
addition, the descriptive method of research is used because it provides information about
an element of interpretation of the meaning of significance of what was described. The
description was often combined with comparison and contrast involving measurement,
classifications, interpretation and evaluation.

Respondents of the Study

According to Miss Justina M. Talambayan, Staff of the Tourism office of Lucban,
there are about 1.6 million tourists in 2013 and 3.9 million tourists in 2014 visited
Lucban. But these tourists are registered only in Kamay ni Hesus. The office has no
approximation regarding the tourists and visitors during the Pahiyas Festival.
The respondents of the study were chosen and picked from tourists of Lucban
during Pahiyas Festival. Their ages are from 16 and above because they are deemed to be
knowledgeable and competent to provide the data needed in the study. 100 respondents
were chosen to participate. The researchers went to some establishments in Lucban,
municipal building, office of tourism, neighborhood, relatives and classmates. First, the
researchers ask the respondents if they attended the Pahiyas Festival 2015 before they
distribute the questionnaire.

33
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .

Research Instrument
A self-structured type of questionnaire was used by the researchers to facilitate the
study. It is a checklist type containing statements and were answered by the respondents
by checking the column that corresponds to their answers. The first draft of the
questionnaire was submitted to the research advises for correlations and suggestions.
Several changes were made. Some items not considered relevant to the study were
discarded. The revised was then pretested by the dean of the college. The criteria used in
validation were those suggested. After the validation of the experts, the final draft was
made.
The questionnaire was composed of two parts. The first part determined the
demographic profile of the respondents such as age, sex, status, educational background
and occupation. The second part is to find out the tourist satisfaction with a scale of 1 to
4. The lowest scale is the 1 and the highest is 4. The mean range 1.0 1.75 with a
descriptive rating of highly not satisfied, 1.76-2.50 is not satisfied, 2.51-3.25 is satisfied
and 3.26-4.0 is highly satisfied. The same scale was used in the problems encountered but
the descriptive rating were strongly disagree, disagree, agree and strong agree.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers wrote a letter to the dean of the College of Industrial Technology
and to the research adviser for the approval of permission to conduct the study. After the
approval, the researchers made questionnaires as instrument of the evaluation of the
tourists satisfaction on the activities during the 2015 Pahiyas Festival.

34
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
Having found the questionnaire valid and reliable the research then sought the
approval of the dean and research adviser. After the approval of these heads, the
researcher administered the questionnaire. The questionnaires were administered in the
first week of June, 2015 and 100 or 100% of the respondents returned the questionnaire.
After the survey, the result of the information from the questionnaire has been tallied.
Presentation of data is in tabular form to easily analyze and interpret the results.
Statistical Treatment
The responses to the questionnaires were reviewed, consolidated, and analyzed.
Data were presented in graphs or in tabulated form.

The percentage frequency rating formula were applied:

P=f/N x 100%
Where: P = Percentage value
f = frequency
N = Number of respondents

The weighted mean was solved using the formula:

WM = 4(f) + 3(f) + 2(f) + 1(f)

Where:
WM = weighted mean
f = frequency response
N = number of respondents

In order to arrive at definite interpretation of result for each item, mean range was

Recommendation
Based on the foregoing findings and conclusions, the following recommendations
are presented:
1. The local government must give prizes for those who participated in the grand
parade of the owner of the carabao. The participants in every barangay are
responsible for the expenses needed in decorating the carabao.
2. Encourage the participants to display often native products in the trade fair. The
materials and food products are always the same as the previous years.
3. Increase the prizes for those contestants in cooking contest. Most of the prizes
given during the Pahiyas Festivals are coming from the sponsorship.
4. In cultural show must be announced three to four months ahead before the
Pahiyas Festival. The activity for cultural show is not regularly done yearly.
Sometimes it would announce almost one month ahead therefore preparation is
not enough.
5. The beauty pageant must have a long period of preparation. The announcement
for the beauty pageant contest is given only 2 months preparation. The
participants have short time of training and practicing.

50
TOURISTS SATISFACTION ON THE ACTIVITIES OF .
6. The local government must provide a wide space for the parking areas during the
festival. Its obvious that traffic is everywhere during this celebration because of
the narrow streets and road.
7. The tourism office must line up more activities and competition that will make the
week-long celebration more attractive, joyful and meaningful.
