DEEP WEB SYNOPSIS

Deep Web gives the inside story of one of the most important and riveting digital crime sagas of
the century -- the arrest of Ross William Ulbricht, the 31-year-old entrepreneur convicted of being
'Dread Pirate Roberts,' creator and operator of online black market Silk Road. As the only film with
exclusive access to the Ulbricht family, Deep Web explores how the brightest minds and thought
leaders behind the Deep Web and Bitcoin are now caught in the crosshairs of the battle for control
of a future inextricably linked to technology, with our digital rights hanging in the balance.

Key dates and developments to consider as you watch DEEP WEB:

On March 25, 2015, a criminal complaint was filed against two former Federal agents who
led the Silk Road task force in Baltimore. Among other charges, these agents allegedly stole
over a million dollars in Bitcoin from the Silk Road and transferred the money to personal
accounts. The government did not allow Ulbricht's defense to address this criminal
investigation during the trial.
On May 29, 2015 Ross Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of
parole.
On June 1, 2015 Section 215 of the Patriot Act which specifically outlines the US
Governments ability to conduct surveillance and collect data is scheduled to expire. The
battle to extend and revise the bill is currently being waged in the Senate.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

ALEX WINTER -- Director, Writer and Producer

This film is a journey of discovery, beginning twenty years ago with my own examination of the
Internet and the political and philosophical movements that sprung from its origins. The
intervening years have seen both the Internet and these movements rapidly expand; moving from
the original Cypherpunks through the peer-to-peer revolution, anonymity networks like Tor,
Wikileaks, the Arab Spring, Edward Snowden, Bitcoin and now the proliferation of online black
markets, spearheaded by the original Silk Road.

Deep Web follows my personal path of exploration and expands out to the participants in the film;
primarily Ross Ulbricht, recently convicted of being the Dread Pirate Roberts, the creator and
operator of the Silk Road. The narrative peels back the layers of who Ross is (or isnt) and delves
into the psyche of Rosss parents, Lyn and Kirk, forced by circumstance into the very center of a
debate around citizens rights in the Digital Age. The film also features insight from Andy
Greenberg, the Wired journalist tracking this story from the beginning and the only reporter to
have interviewed the Dread Pirate Roberts. Struggling to separate fact from myriad fiction, I
wanted to additionally highlight the perspective of both the law enforcement and public engaged
in this seminal case.

At its heart, Deep Web is not so much about technology or even crime, but an attempt to strip
away the prevailing exaggeration and one-dimensional reporting in order to examine the
individuals caught up in these seismic changes that are shaping our future.

Alex Winter entered show business as a child actor on
Broadway and came to prominence in the wildly
popular BILL AND TED franchise. Winter has directed
two narrative features: cult classic FREAKED for 20th
Century Fox and FEVER, for Lionsgate, which screened
at Cannes. His TV credits range from MTVs THE IDIOT
BOX to Emmy-nominated work for Cartoon Network, as
well as numerous commercials and music videos.

Winters VH1 Rock Doc Downloaded has earned
nationwide critical acclaim at theatrical and festival
screenings. Just released is Smosh: The Movie, which
Winter directed and opened as the #1 comedy on
iTunes. Winter's latest, award-winning documentary
Deep Web, recently had a critically acclaimed world premiere at SXSW and a broadcast premiere in
the U.S. on the Epix network, to be followed by a worldwide release on all platforms in September,
2015. Twitter: @alxwinter

MARC SCHILLER & GLEN ZIPPER -- Producers

When we decided to produce a film about the Deep Web with Alex Winter, we were anxious to move ahead
quickly in bringing this gripping story to audiences as it was happening. Rarely is there an opportunity to tell
a narrative endowed with such fascinating characters and high stakes, while at the same time being so
acutely relevant to the times. The news has been full of hyperbolic stories about a lawless online world;
where people are using cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, to operate nefariously on a hidden Dark Net. However,
the truth is far more complex than the media portrays, with the fight to shut these technologies down
becoming a battle for our digital rights. At the heart of the film is the complex story of Ross Ulbricht, a
young entrepreneur who was recently convicted of being the operator of online black market Silk Road. We
look forward to taking viewers on a journey into the Deep Web, giving them unprecedented access to one of
the most riveting crime sagas of the decade and a world that until now, only existed in the shadows.
