SUMMARY
The proposed theoretical model for bond
strength is, as far as the author knows, the
first quantitative theory expressing the
presence and the size of the threshold
surface expansion. The model explains
why different cold welding processes
result in different threshold surface
expansions and it is furthermore able to
take into account the variation of the
threshold of different metals by the
surface parameters ~ and Y'.
The theory should also be applicable to
deformation bonding at elevated temperature if diffusion is not occurring.
The lower threshold surface expansion
generally observed at higher temperature 3
can probably be explained by evaporation
of the contaminant film which is taken
into consideration by the parameter Y'.
