body.Allthebodyscellsneedaconstantsupplyofoxygen,especiallythoseinthebrain.Thebraincellslive

Theheartisaspecializedmusclethatservesasapump.Thispumpisdividedintofourchambersconnectedby
tinydoorscalledvalves.Thechambersworktokeepthebloodflowingroundthebodyinacircle.
Attheendofeachcircuit,veinscarrythebloodtotherightatrium,thefirstofthefourchambers.Itsoxygenhas

hasaccumulated.Fromtherightatriumthebloodflowsthroughthetricuspidvalveintothesecondchamber,
therightventricle.Therightventriclecontractswhenitisfilled,pushingthebloodthroughthepulmonaryartery,
whichleadstothelungs.Inthelungsthebloodgivesupitscarbondioxideandpicksupfreshoxygen,thenit
travelstothethirdchamber,theleftatrium.Whenthischamberisfilled,itforcesthebloodthroughthemitral
valvetotheleftventricle.Fromhereitispushedintoabigbloodvesselcalledaortaandsentroundthebodyby
wayofarteries.
Heartdiseasescanresultfromdamagetotheheartmuscle,thevalvesorthepacemaker.Ifthemuscleis
damaged,theheartisunabletopumpproperly.Ifthevalvesaredamaged,bloodcannotflownormallyand
easilyfromonechambertoanother,andifthepacemakerisdefective,thecontractionsofthechamberswill
becomeuncoordinated.
UntiltheTwentiethcentury,fewdoctorsdaredtotouchtheheart.In1953,allthischanged.Aftertwentyyearsof
work,Dr.JohnGibbonofU.S.A.haddevelopedamachinethatcouldtakeovertemporarilyfromtheheartand
lungs.Bloodcouldberoutedthroughthemachine,bypassingtheheartsothatsurgeonscouldworkinsideit
andseewhattheyweredoing.Theeraofopenheartsurgeryhadbegun.Intheoperatingtheatre,itgives
surgeonsthechancetorepairorreplaceadefectiveheart.Manypatientshavehadplasticvalvesinsertedin
