Introduction
One day while on a class trip in the library a student brought the play Romeo and
Juliet to me, and asked if I would read it to the class. The pre-benchmarks students had
a long way to go before they would be able to understand a Shakespearean play. I did a

I investigated the market. Some publishers have classics but their beginning levels
have 200 words. The pre-benchmark student only has to learn 96 words to understand
the Romeo and Juliet adaptation for their level and these words are words that they
desperately need every day in their lives. If, with only 96 words they can describe the
simplified plot of the play, what else will they be able to speak about with these 96

Juliet and Tybalt.
The first adaptation I made was the level one version. The students liked it so much
that I adapted a version for every level in my class: pre-benchmark, level one, and level
two.
The level specific stories model sentence order, use simple syntax, and are written in
the simple present tense. They are of very high interest. Romeo and Juliet is said to be
the most interesting story ever written. It is an adult story with low vocabulary and very
high frequency words.

phrasal verbs, and high frequency words.

It can be used with or without the computer and it does not have to be performed as
a play for the students to benefit from the story because it can be used as a backdrop
for a large variety of language-learning activities; many of which I have included in this
book.
It is a great conversation generator and students frequently impress me by expressing an idea or opinion on the play that I have never heard before, and since there are no
wrong opinions students confidently, and often passionately present their ideas to the
class.
So, enjoy the stories! Your students will thank you.
