Introduction
3RB12 motor protection relays are used for protection
of electrical equipment such as, three phase induction
motors or transformers against overload, unbalanced
currents, phase feilure, locked rotor condition, earth
faults and thermistor protection. The protection must
be reliable, especially when used for motors involving
critical applications like continuous process industries,
chemical industries, pulp & paper mill, water works
ote.
3RB12 microprocessorbased motor protection relay is
designed for such critical applications. 3RB12 relays
conforms to IEC 947-4-1 and IS 13947-4-1
Protection
The 3RB12 microprocessorbased motor protection
relay ensures comprehensive protection of electrical
equipment, all within the same unit, as listed below
1. Overload protection with continuous monitoring of
individual currents in the three phases. It offers
accurate protection in the event of
> overload
phase current unbalance
- phase failure
locked rotor condition
Features - 3RB12
Three current ranges upto 100A
2. Comprehensive protection: Overcurrent,
phase unbalance, phase failure, locked
rotor protection thermistor trip and earth
fault protection as standard
3. 3 LEDs (‘Ready, ‘Earth fault’, Overload’)
4. Current detection immune to harmonics
and external interference
5. Self monitoring. i.e. trips in the event of
internal fault
6. Separate 1NO+1NC contacts for
overload and ground fault, each.
2, Motor protection against excessive temperature
rise. This is done by a trip module in the relay which
senses the ofp of the thermistor unit connected in
‘the motor winding
1NO+1NC potential ree contacts are actuated in
the event of overload or thermistor fault
3. Earth fault protection;
- Internal for motors with 3 wire connection; relay

3RB10 Overload relay ‘Typical Time-current characteristic for ‘Typical Time-current characteristic for
trip class CLASS 10 trip class CLASS 20‘3RB10 Microprocessor based Overload Relay
Introduction
Motors, which are the work horse of electrical
industry, need accurate and reliable protection, and
that too at an economical cost. 3RB10 microprocessor
based overload relays are designed keeping this need
in mind,
3RB10 overload relays conform to IEC 947-41,
IEC 947-5-1 and DIN VDE 0860. These relays are
suitable for use in arduous conditions and are shock
hazard protected acc. to DIN VDE 0106, part 100.
‘3RB10 microprocessor based overload relays provide
accurate and reliable protection for 3 phase induction
motors with rated currents upto 100A. For higher
ratings and currents, 3RB10 relays with external CTs
(class 10 P10 & burden > 5VA) can be used.
‘These overload relays are ideally suited for motor
protection where the motor starting times are high
upto 20 seconds (class 20 version).
Features - 3RB10
1. Wide range for setting (ratio 1:4)
2. Phase failure protection - tripping time
<3 Sec.
3. Minimal power losses (0.05 W).
4. Self-powered
5. Suitable for service temp. upto 70°C -
without derating
6. Class 10/class 20 tripping
7. Separate STOP and TEST Facility
Protection offered
3RB10 microprocessor based overload relays have
been designed for use in sinusoidal 50/60 Hz supply
voltages. Protection is assured at all times as the
Telays ere self-powered and there is no need for an
exterrial power supply source.
‘A microprocessor checks the ourrent values of each
phase and actuates the trip contacts in the event of
overload or phase failure. The relays are available with
CLASS 10 tripping for normal starting motors and in
CLASS 20 tripping for heavy starting motors. The
overload relay must be set to the rated motor current,
The tripping current corresponds to 110% of the set
current.
3RB10 overload relays offer faster phase failure
protection. In the event of phase loss, the relay trips
in less than 3 seconds,
Advantages
Few ranges - only seven ranges from 0.1
to 100A. Reduced inventory
2. Ensures reliable protection even during
single phasing conditions
3. Lower heating inside the panel. Energy
saving
4, No need for external control supply
5. One relay for all tough conditions
6. Suitable for motors with longer starting
times upto 20 Sec.
7. Does not give trip indication if STOP
command is activated.
Salient Features
3RB10 overload relays are noted for their wide setting
ranges (setting ratio 1:4), for their phase failure
protection function (see characteristic curves) and also
for their minimal energy requirement (0.05W).
‘The printed circuit board and the electronic
components undergo special manufacturing process
which ensures reliable protection even at higher
temperatures, in aggressive and tropical atmospheres.
Following features offer flexibility to the user
= 1NO + 1NC potential free contacts. These contacts
have a high rating and can be used to switch a
contactor directly, At the same time they are ideal
for PLC applications (17V, 5 mA)
= Site settable Auto/Manual reset facility
— STOP function which actuates only the NC contact
and helps distinguish stop from a trip condition.
= Test function with status indicator
Actuates both the auxiliary contacts.Microprocessor based 3RB Relay
