ANCHOR WIRE STABILITY ASSESSMENT

1.

INTRODUCTION

1.1

General

The S1 anchor and wire have been abandoned temporarily and will be recovered
during OI program in 2017. The figures below shows the sonar scan finding at the
anchor wire abandonment location.

Figure 1-1: Sonar Scan Finding

ANCHOR WIRE STABILITY ASSESSMENT

1.2

Finding
Based on the findings, the 1.5 inch dia. anchor wire is expected to be stationary due to:

The wire is small i.e. surface area to weight ratio is small to be moved by seabed
current

1.3

The wire will be buried into the seabed due to soft mud condition

Purpose
The purpose of this technical note is to assess and evaluate the lateral and vertical stability
of the abandoned anchor wire.

TECHNICAL DATA

3.1

Introduction
This section summarizes the design data that has been used in the stability calculations. The
technical data at nearby location/field have been extracted from the Pipeline & Riser Design
Basis Guntong EOR Early WAG Reference [c].

3.2

Design Code
There is no specific guideline or design code for this anchor wire stability assessment.
However, the design of the subsea pipeline system has been adopted for this stability
assessment and shall meet the requirements of the DNV-RP-F109 On-Bottom Stability
Design of Submarine Pipelines, October 2007, Reference [a].

3.4

Environmental Data
The water depth at the anchor wire abandonment location is 63m. The wave and current
data are extracted from the Pipeline & Riser Design Basis Guntong - EOR Early WAG
Reference [c] and summarized in the table below:

The stability calculations consider omni-directional environmental data, unless stated

otherwise, acting perpendicular to the pipeline. This is considered most onerous.
3.5

Seawater Properties
The seawater density was considered to be 1025 kg/m3.

ANCHOR WIRE STABILITY ASSESSMENT

4.

METHODOLOGY

4.1

Stability Assessment
Anchor wire stability is assessed by taking into consideration the water depth, the soil type,
and the metocean data (significant wave and current loading) following DNV-RP-F109
guidelines, Reference [a].

In-house MathCAD were developed in order to determine the stability status of the anchor
wire at the given condition for the given loading. As per DNV RP F109, two approaches were
followed: the absolute lateral stability method. and the generalized stability method. The
vertical stability has also been checked.

The environmental loading on the anchor wire have been applied as described in DNV
RPF109, Reference [a].
4.2

Lateral Stability
I.

Generalized Stability Method

DNV RPF109 establishes design curves for sets of pipeline displacements against
input parameters (Ly, M, K, N, See below). The applicability of this method is limited
to certain values of the pipe specific weight (1.05 s

gGeneralized

3 ), and the check is

performed before commencement of any calculations. The generalized stability

method has been utilized in this assessment to determine the stability status of the
pipeline exposed on the seabed where lateral displacements are acceptable to a
certain extent as described below.
The allowed lateral displacement is in the range of less than half a pipe diameter
(virtually stable) to significant displacement of 10 pipe diameters.

The weight required for achieving a virtually stable pipe is denoted Lstable

while the

weight required for obtaining a 10 pipe diameter displacement is denoted L10, and Ly
is the significant weight for y displacement, and is calculated as follows:

II.

Absolute Lateral Stability Method

The inequalities below are used for checking the absolute stability of the pipeline in a
trench.

ANCHOR WIRE STABILITY ASSESSMENT

4.3

Vertical Stability
This method depends on the simple comparison of the submerged weight per unit of pipe
and the specific weight of water.
To check the floatation status in water, the following inequality is used;

5.

STABILITY RESULTS

5.1

General
The on-bottom stability calculations were performed for the 1.5 dia. anchor wire on the
seabed. The calculations and results follow DNV RP F109 guidelines, Reference [a].
Anchor wire stability has been assessed for omni-directional wave and current loading acting
in the same direction and perpendicular to the anchor line. This is considered onerous as
compared to the wave and current loading acting at the appropriate angle to the anchor line.
The anchor wire stability requirements and results of the omni-directional environmental
loading are presented in this section.
