Advanced materials

Advanced cutting tool materials include cubic boron nitride (CBN), ceramics and polycrystalline diamond
(PCD).

CBN
Main application area = H - hardened steel
Other application areas = K - cast iron and S - heat resistant superalloys (HRSA)

CB7015: CB7015 contains 50% CBN with fine grain size in a unique ceramic binder. It is coated for
easy wear detection. Maximum performance is achieved in continuous to light interrupted cutting of
hardened steels where machine conditions are very stable. CB7015 can also be used in finishing of nickel
based superalloys.

CB7025: CB7025 contains 60% CBN with a bimodal grain distribution (1&3 m) in a ceramic binder.
High fracture resistance makes it a very versatile grade for hard part turning. It has excellent tool life in
interrupted cutting and is also recommended for mixed production and where there is some instability in the
machine setup.

CB7525: CB7525 is a very tough material, designed for grey cast iron machining. It also performs
well in hard part turning applications in heavy interrupted cuts (short contact time) and in very abrasive
steels (tool steels, manganese steels). It contains 90% CBN with fine grains in a ceramic binder.

CB7925: CB7925 contains 75% CBN in a ceramic binder. It has a bimodal CBN grain size
distribution with a mix of large CBN grains and fine grains. The main application area is high alloy cast irons
but this grade will also perform in turning of hardened steel and cast iron rolls. CB7925 CBN inserts are only
available in solid format.

Ceramics

Other application area = H, hardened steel

Sialon Ceramics

CC6060: Designed to optimise performance in pre-machined HRSA materials in

stable conditions. Offers high security and predictable wear due to high notch wear
resistance.
CC6065: Offers good toughness and security. Suitable for first stage machining of
HRSAs in semi-interrupted applications as well as machining forged skin and other
toughness demanding operations.
Whisker Ceramics

CC670: A silicon carbide whisker reinforced aluminium oxide based ceramic with
excellent bulk toughness making it most suitable for machining HRSAs in
unfavourable conditions.
Aluminium oxide (Al2O3)based ceramics

CC620: Pure Al2O3 based ceramic. Recommended for high speed finishing of grey
cast irons in stable and dry conditions.
CC650: Mixed Al2O3 based ceramic. Recommended for high speed finishing of grey
cast irons and hardened cast irons in stable conditions. Can also be used in semifinishing operations of high temperature alloys in applications where there is some
instability. General purpose grade.
CC6050: Mixed Al2O3 based ceramic with TiN coating. Good thermal properties and
wear resistance. Primarily recommended for light continuous finishing in hardened
steels.
Silicon Nitride

CC6190: Silicon nitride based ceramic providing good toughness and thermal shock
resistance. Recommended for high speed roughing to finishing of cast irons in stable
conditions.
