mode for frame generation based on the layers underneath.
b. You will generate true colored and optimized GIF output.
Photobie Interface
Figure 1shows the main Photobie interface. It consists of general tool bars, a thumbnail panel, paint
tools, and palettes. The Photobie interface is flexible. For example, you can click on the slider
indicated by “1” in above screen shot to hide the bottom thumbnail panel and the right paint panel.
You can also drag those sliders to expand or shrink these two panels. You can click on minimize
icons indicated by “2” as above to minimize the color palette or the paint tool box. If you have
multiple images opening, you can click buttons indicated by “3” above to arrange the layout.
partial image within the selected region to the clipboard so that you can paste to another image
within Photobie or into other applications such as MS Word . “5” is a paste tool, it pastes the
image from the clipboard into current opening image as a new layer. “6” is similar to “5” but
generates a brand new image instead.
Color Adjustment
Photobie provides various color adjustment tools for basic or advanced users. There is a floating
Layer Manager, which is heavily feature packed. We will discuss it in the advanced layer section.
Within the Layer Manager you can find a color adjustment menu:
As shown by “1” in Figure 4, you can adjust the color balance (Figure 5 on page 9) and adjust
RGB channel curves/levels (Figure 6 on page 9).
Paint Tools
Some of these tools support a texture feature. All these textures are stored within the “textures”
folder of Photobie program path.
You can add new textures, remove textures, and refresh textures using the tool set at “11”.
Following are full descriptions of these tools.
Pen
You can set the size of this tool and add special effects like a hollow pen, dot pen and 3D pen.
4. Brush
This tool is one of the most important features of Photobie. It is flexible
and resource friendly.
In Figure 12, “0” points to the brush tool, once you click on it, you will see the right panel is
reconfigured. “7” is a list of brushes from a specific brush category. “6” is a preview for the
brush. You can set up the brush color. “1” shows brush size, opacity, blur and speed
adjustments. “2” adjusts the angle of the brush. “4” is how you set brush color mixture,
random rotate/flip/resize. “5” check box can load the brush’s original image so that you can
apply original brush image in whatever color and transparency to current image. The brush
images must be in .png or .gif file formats that support transparency. “5” will be discussed at
the Template and Scrapbooking section.
5. Airbrush
This is a general airbrush tool. You can adjust the size, the pressure and
the sphere.
6. Smudge
Smudge is one of the more interesting tools. It gives a effect of finger
painting, it blending surrounding colors together along the stroke path.
7. Bucket fill
This is a very useful tool. This is a combination of two tools. It acts as a
fuzzy selection tool, selecting a closed region with the same color. You can
fill this region with specific colors, textures, patterns or gradient. The
bucket fill tool is most often used for digital coloring book.
8. Touch Up
This a unique coloring tool. This tool is called touch up tool because it will
gradually transform the area it is applied to from the original color to the
paint primary color.
9. Text Tool
The text tool allows you to insert text.
The “0” in Figure 14points to the text tool. When you click on the image while in text mode, it will
generate a transparent text input box “11”. You can drag the input box to anywhere and type in the text
within “12”. If you want to remember the last text input, simply check the check box at “13”.
You can set up the text font, size, bold, Italian and underline through “1”,”2”,”3” in figure 14. Also, like
the draw/fill shape tools, you can apply texture, pattern and gradient to the text. “5”, “6”, “7”, “8” and
“9” are similar to draw/fill shape tools. “4” is a special feature to turn on shading.
9. Eraser
Eraser is a general tool. You can erase more smoothly by turning on the soft
eraser option.
10. Eyedropper
Use this tool to select a color in the image, setting it as the paint primary
color. It is often used to set up the transparent color of certain layer.
Color Palettes
Photobie has a very intuitive color palette tool set consisting of primary/secondary color, hex color
codes, a customized color palette and a color ring.
You can save a pallet or save the palette as a new palette using “7”. You can load other
customized palettes using “6”. If you want to add the primary color to the current customized
palette, you simply move you cursor and point to a blank or non-blank grid, then press letter “a”
to add it. Press “d” to remove a color from the grid.
The region tool set is pointed to by the red arrow. You can select using rectangle, square, oval,
circle, round rectangle or polygon shapes. You can also select, freehand or use the fuzzy selection
(magic wand) tools.
The fuzzy selection (magic wand) tool works as following. You click on a point with a specific
color, then it will generate a closed region that has the same or similar color as you clicked. You
can adjust the sensitivity of this region selection tool. You can clear or invert a region with “1”
and “2”. You can set the combination mode to Single/Union/Intersect/Exclude/XOR. XOR
selects regions where they do not intersect. You have a temporary region cache “5” for you to
store the region you just selected; you have a permanent region cache “7” for you to store a
selected region or to apply a saved region. Press the ‘+’ button of “6” or “8”, you will add the
current region selection to cache. The ‘-‘ buttons will remove a selected region from the list.
You can apply the cached region to current image by clicking on the button with the check
mark. You can switch region selection s with “9” region cache switching tools.
Layer Management
Photobie efficiently manages layers. The heavy duty Layer Manager, easily provides many kinds of layer
operations.
1. This is a layer list. All the layers are numbered starting from 0 for Background. The largest
numbered layer indicates the topmost layer. Each layer has a check box The check box allows
you to select multiple layers for group operation like merging layers or moving layers together.
2. Click on this button to switch the layer list from names to thumbnails, and back again.
3. This will merge (flatten) all layers into a single layer. You can merge and keep or erase the
merged layers.
4. These buttons shuffles the layer up and down.
Layer Tools
Indicated by the red numbers, the layer tools are:
1.A quick tool to allow you select (check) all layers.
2.The layer merge tool. You have two options when
merging: delete merged layers or keep the merged
layers after the merge.
3.Crop the current layer or all checked layers.
4. Copy the current layer or all checked layers.
Layer copy/paste/clone is different than general
image copy/paste. Layer copy/paste/clone includes
more information than just image information. Layer
cloning will generate a new layer in exactly the same place.
5.You can paste copied layer(s).
6.Photobie layer clone tool has three options:
- Clone the current layer as a one item
- Clone only the part of the current layer bounded by a selected region.
- Clone only the part of the whole image bounded by a selected region.
7.This is the most often used tool in Photobie. You can move/resize the current layer by dragging.
8.You can resize the layer using a specific layer resize control.
9.As discussed before, this is a layer color adjustment tool set. You can do advanced or basic
adjustments.
10.You can rotate the layer to a specific angle.
11.You can flip the layer vertically and horizontally.
12.This will copy part of the current layer image bound by a selected region to the system clipboard.
13.You can cut a selected region from the current layer with this tool, making the current layer
partially transparent.
14.This is a quick tool to set up the primary color as the transparent color of the current layer. This
way you can use the color picker first to pick up the color in the image you want to set as a
transparent color, then click this button to set it as transparent. You will need to adjust the “16”
transparent tolerance to make the transparent color range.
15.You can change the opacity of the layer directly using this. You can also change the opacity
within the layer opacity property grid.
16.As discussed in “14”, it is for transparent color range adjustment.
17.You can hide a layer by checking this check box
18.You can turn a layer into a mask layer, a mask layer works as a general image mask. Depends on
the darkness of the color, it controls how much the underneath layer can show up by the alpha
value.
19.This one and “20” are for quick layer rotation.
20.You can type in the rotation degrees directly and press “Enter” key to confirm.
21.The last one is the button to expand or shrink the layer manager, showing or hiding the layer
property grids control.

button.
Final Image
And following is a final image after a single template layer replacement.
The general brush feature has been covered before. There is an option useful to templates shown
and discussed on the following page.
\
Figure 22 brush feature for adding embellishment
You can grab whatever clip art, Photoshop brushes or other embellishments and create a sub-
folder within the brushes directory of the Photobie program. Photobie will load it as general
brush, that you can apply in various ways:
a) You can reset the color or use original brush image color. In Figure 22, “1” points to the
check box “Original Image”. If it is checked, the original brush image is displayed in the
brush preview box. You also have the option to override the brush color with the primary
paint color.
b) You can adjust the size, blur, opacity, speed, color modes of the brush and randomly
flip/rotate it.
c) You can draw with the brush or you can click it, using it as a stamp.
d) You can switch between different categories of brushes easily.
The first method is to use the notification icon on your task bar When Photobie is running, you will see a
Photobie icon on the right bottom of your window as pointed by the arrows in Figure 23.
There is also another way of capturing screens using hot keys With Photobie you can set up to 8
customized screen capture hot keys Using these hot keys, you can capture the full screen, or an
active window with/without the cursor. You set the output image size. You can also set a fixed
area to capture. The captured image can be exported to other programs. See following screen
shot of the Screen capture configuration panel.
You can use all of Photobie's rich edit features on captured images. Figure 26 shows the
captured screen with an arrow and question mark added.
Animation editing
Photobie easily assembles GIF animation by treating each image layer as a GIF animation frame.
As discussed on page 23, each layer has an animation time delay property used to control the
frame speed. There is also a animation control panel for you to fine tune you animation. See
below:
Plugin Menu
Below “1” is a list of different.8BF filters plug-ins arranged in in groups based on author or
company. Clicking on the plug-in's name invokes its dialog box, letting you to apply the filter to
your image.
Plugin Manager
Robust Playlist Manager: you can create/modify/save a playlist and load it easily. You can
easily add/remove single flash .swfs from your list. You can activate partial flash .swf within
your list to play.
Multiple Play <odes: you can play a list repeatedly or only one by one manually
