ENTRY TO SWEDEN
Residence permit applications are handled by the Swedish Migration
Board.

Students from countries outside the EU/EEA

In general, all students from countries outside the EU/EEA need to
have a residence permit to study in Sweden. You need to apply for
and receive your permit before you travel to Sweden. The permit

Sweden.
Students who need a residence permit are advised to apply as

Applications for residence permits are processed by the Swedish
Migration Board, NOT the University. The residence permit
application is your responsibility. Your admission results/notification
of results or letter of acceptance is necessary in order to start the
application process and for the Swedish Migration Board to complete
it.
The Swedish Migration Board grants residence permits for one year
at a time. Students must apply to extend the permit for the next
year of study.
Students from EU/EEA countries
You do not need a residence permit before you arrive if you come
from an EU/EEA country. However, if you are studying for more than

MEDICAL INSURANCE
Be sure you are adequately insured before entering Sweden!
The coordinating university of the Erasmus Mundus Program is
responsible for the insurance. Please contact the coordinating
university if you have any questions in regards to what insurance
you have.
It is also recommended that you have a property-insurance that
covers costs if you for example, cause any damage to other peoples
property or in your accommodation.
The main principle of the EU agreement is that a citizen of any EU
country will get same benefits from the social security system as the
citizens of the EU country where he or she is studying. Students
must have an European Social Insurance card with them from their
own local Social Security Office in order to be covered by the
scheme.
Vaccination / Medication
Upon entry to Sweden there are generally no vaccination
requirements. Temporary regulations may sometimes apply to
travellers from specific countries. If you are uncertain please inquire
at the Swedish Embassy or Consulate if you need a vaccination or
not. If you need some special medication, remember to bring your
prescription with you.

ACCOMMODATION

Guide to housing in Lule for International Students

For students coming to Lule there are three main options for
housing: Student housing on Campus, subleasing and Nordkalotten
Student Hotel. In this document you will find detailed information
about these options and some additional options.
Housing on Campus
There are two housing agencies for student accommodations on
Lulebo AB and Lindbcks Fastigheter AB. You can register before you
are accepted to the university.
We recommend you to signup and apply as early as possible. To
receive a student accommodation you need to be accepted as a
student at the university but you can register and put yourself in line
years in advance. Once you have been accepted you can start
applying for accommodation actively.
Lulebo offers dorm rooms where you are only allowed to stay one
person and unfurnished apartments in different sizes. A selection of
the apartments around campus is only for students. Lulebo also
have apartments all over Lule. See their website for more details:
Lulebo.se.
Lindbcks have furnished single bed student apartments in varying
sizes up to 37,5 m In the largest ones 28 m and 37,5 m it is
possible to put in an extra bed at your own expense, it will be very
tight but maybe okay for a limited time. Lindbcks also have larger
unfurnished student apartments. See their website for more details:
Studentbostadsservice.se.
Lulebo sometimes release apartments for "direct reservation" which
means a shorter window of opportunity and that the number of
people that can show interest is limited. With Lulebo you can have
an email sent to you when there are available apartments that
match your expression of interest.

Subleasing
It is also possible to sublease an apartment. You can find such
offerings at Blocket.se and Mystudentstore.se. These websites are in
Swedish but you can use Google Translate to read them.
Direct link to search query for subleases at blocket.se: Bostder att
hyra i Sverige - Blocket Bostad.
How to use mystudentstore.se to search for housing in Lule:

Uthyres = To rent; Lgenheter/Rum = Apartments/Rooms; Sk = Search

There is also a facebook group where students put up rooms and

apartments for subleasing: Ge tak t en student @ LTU.
Nordkalotten Student Hotel
Students that do not have an accommodation when they start at the
university can IF THERE ARE ROOMS AVAILABLE, stay at The
Nordkalotten Student Hotel. They offer shared rooms at a reduced
price (currently 3600 SEK per month).
For more information and to make a reservation:

We recommend everyone to make a reservation for temporary
accommodation.

Apartment hotel
Another recommendation is Fastigheter Lina, a landlord that
specializes in furnished apartments for short term stays. Many of
their offerings can be a bit expensive but they have some "lower"
prized ones. If you are early you can get a good deal. Their
apartments are in the city centre with good communication by bus
to the university. There are buses every 10-20 minutes and it takes
10 minutes one way. See their website for more details:

MONEY
Do not rely on one single means of payment! Travellers cheques are
a good and safe way to carry your money when you travel as well as
a Visa Card or a Master Card. In Sweden, you can use the cards
directly for payments, as well as for withdrawals from your bank

account. Money can be sent to you by bank cheques or deposited in

your Visa account. Do not bring personal cheques, as they will not
be cashed in Swedish banks.
When arriving in Lule, be sure to have some Swedish cash to cover
daily expenses. During the Orientation Weeks you will need some
money to pay for the Student Union fee and membership fees to
student organisations. You will find several cash points/ATMs in the
city centre. Also local buses dont accept cash, you pay with credit
card or bus card.

COMMUNICATION BY E-MAIL AND TELEPHONE

All students are given e-mail access free-of-charge. This is the most
used mode of communication both domestically and internationally.
Students have access to coin/card telephones in public building and
in some of the student corridors Mobile or Cellular Phones
If you have a cellular phone (GSM with a small SIM-card) you can
easily buy a refill card in Sweden. The cards vary between 250-750
SEK.
Computer
You might want to bring your own computer as many rooms have a
direct Internet connection. You will need a network adapter/card of
Ethernet standard 10 MB or 100 MB and a TP-cable of Category 5.
If you do not have a computer or prefer not to bring it of course you
can use the computer facilities on campus

CLIMATE
The warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic gives Sweden a milder climate
than other areas equally far north. Stockholm is at almost the same
latitude as southern Greenland but has an average temperature of
about +18C (64 F) in July. The difference between the southern and
northern regions of Sweden is not so noticeable in the summer,
except for the sun never setting in June and July in the northernmost
part, a phenomenon called the midnight sun. In the winter, however,
northern Sweden is always covered by snow (at least between
December and March) while the winter climate in much of southern
Sweden may vary from year to year, as does the amount of snow.

10

Winters in Lule are rather cold, with lot of snow. Summers are
usually relatively warm. In autumn and spring there is occasional
rain. Average temperature in Lule in winter is about -15C and in
summer +18C. The short but spectacular spring and autumn, help
to counterbalance the effect of winter. During the summer it never
gets dark, and the sun does not set at all for some time. During the
darkest weeks of winter there are four hours of full day-light.

Preparing ,Big Air on Lule Campus February 2016.

Since the weather is very cold you should bring supplies of warm
clothing such as coats, sweaters, warm socks, long underwear etc.
You will also need at least one pair of comfortable and warm boots or
walking shoes as well as casual shoes.
There are good opportunities for winter sports such as ice-skating,
ice-hockey, cross-country skiing and down-hill skiing.
