Middle School Math Pathways

Placement Criteria
6th Grade Math to Accelerated 7th Grade Math

Students with an A average on eight individual 6th grade common assessments will
have an opportunity to enroll in the accelerated 7th grade math course. However,
district data indicates that students who maintain a high A on each of the eight
individual 6th grade common assessments are more likely to be successful in the
accelerated 7th grade math course. Each 6th grade common assessment carries
equal weight in the computation of the placement average.

The 6th grade math common assessments topics are:

Integers and Absolute Value

Decimals
Fractions
Ratios and Percents
Rates
Expressions
Equations
Functions and Inequalities

7th Grade Math Course Expectations

COMMON CORE 7th GRADE MATH - CC7
Common core 7th grade math is the on grade level math course and prepares students to take future higher level math
courses. Students will not only learn the math standards but will continue to develop higher order thinking skills and
build fluency around the common cores 8 mathematical practices. The topics addressed in this course are:

ratios and proportional reasoning

percents
integers
rational numbers
expressions
equations and inequalities

geometric figures
area and volume
probability
statistics
performance tasks to develop higher order thinking
skills
development of the 8 mathematical practices

ACCELERATED COMMON CORE 7th GRADE MATH - ACC7

Accelerated common core 7th grade math is the first course of a two year accelerated math program. This fast paced course
encompasses 100% of the 7th standards and 60% of the 8th grade standards. Successful students in this course are self
motivated, mathematically prepared, and demonstrate perseverance in solving complex problems. Students are expected to
work at both a high level and, due to the fast pacing of this course, learn new concepts on the first exposure. Finally, the
newly adopted SRVUSD homework policy does not apply to middle school accelerated math courses.

8th Grade Math Course Expectations

COMMON CORE 8th GRADE MATH - CC8
This course is for students who have completed common core 7th grade math. Common core 8th grade math is the on
grade level math course and prepares students to take future higher level math courses. Student will not only learn the
math standards but will continue to develop higher order thinking skills and build fluency around the common cores 8
mathematical practices. The topics addressed in this course are:

real numbers
equations in one variable
equations in two variables
functions
triangles and the pythagorean theorem
transformations

congruence and similarity

volume and surface area
scatter plots
data analysis
performance tasks to develop higher order thinking
skills
development of the 8 mathematical practices

ACCELERATED COMMON CORE ALGEBRA 1 - AA1

This course is for students who have successfully completed accelerated common core 7th math. Accelerated common core
algebra 1 is the second course of a two year accelerated math program. This fast paced course encompasses 100% of the
high school algebra 1 standards and 40% of the 8th grade standards. Successful students in this course are self motivated,
mathematically prepared, and demonstrate perseverance in solving complex problems. Students are expected to work at both
a high level and, due to the fast pacing of this course, learn new concepts on the first exposure. Finally, the newly adopted
SRVUSD homework policy does not apply to middle school accelerated math courses.

FAQs -- frequently asked questions

FAQ 1: Does SRVUSD still offer advanced middle school

math courses?
NO: With the adoption of the common core math standards there are no longer
advanced math courses.

FAQ 2: Whats the difference between an accelerated course

and an advanced course?
The common core math standards are a much more rigorous set of math
standards and require both procedural fluency and a deeper conceptual
understanding of math concepts. In addition, the math standards are not
repeated each year so students essentially have one chance each year to
master each standard. Because of this content sequence, the accelerated
pathway must be a compaction of math courses where three years of math are
covered in two years. As such, the accelerated courses are even more rigorous
as they demand conceptual understanding and procedural fluency at a faster
pace in order to cover three years of math in two years time. This is why an
ACCELERATED math course cannot be compared to an ADVANCED math
course offered in previous school years.

FAQ 3: If my child is in COMMON CORE 7th GRADE MATH

is there a way to take ACCELERATED COMMON CORE
ALGEBRA 1?
NO: The ACCELERATED COMMON CORE ALGEBRA 1 course requires
students to have learned a 100% of the 7th grade standards, 60% of the 8th
grade standards, and the related higher order thinking performance tasks. This
content is taught in the ACCELERATED COMMON CORE 7th GRADE math
course.
The COMMON CORE 7th GRADE MATH course addresses 100% of the 7th
grade standards and the related higher order thinking performance tasks.

FAQ 4: Is there an opportunity to accelerate in high school?

YES: SRVUSD has implemented a summer advancement program where a

student can take a math course outside SRVUSD once a student completes
algebra 1 in a SRVUSD school. The details of the summer program are posted
in February of a given school year. Also, the high schools have a new course,
accelerated algebra 2, that offers another acceleration opportunity.

FAQ 5: If my child does not take an accelerated math course

will they have a competitive university application?

YES: When its time to apply to a university an on grade level math progression
is part of a competitive university application. The math pathways are designed
so all students have an opportunity to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP)
Statistics during their 12th grade year.

FAQ 6: If my child does not take an accelerated math course

will they have access to an advanced placement math
course in high school?
YES: SRVUSD has designed the math pathways so a student taking on grade
level math courses from 6th to 12th grade can enroll in advanced placement
statistics. This pathway looks like:

6th grade -- 6th grade math

7th grade -- 7th grade math
8th grade -- 8th grade math
9th grade -- algebra 1
10th grade -- geometry
11th grade -- algebra 2
12th grade -- honors pre-calculus OR advanced placement (AP) statistics
