PLACEMENT AND PREREGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR THE CLASS OF 2020

Below is a summary of the placement and preregistration information on the Freshman Website

Freshman Placement

All incoming students were placed into a specific level of chemistry, economics, and physics
based upon their standardized test scores and their responses over the summer to the Math and
Science Survey. Chemistry and Economics have posted their placements using Classes*v2;
Physics sends a customized email to each student. Note: New course numbers for chemistry.

Any student who plans to take one of the standard Calculus courses in math (MATH 112, 115,
or 120) must complete the online Calculus diagnostic exam. Based upon their score on this
exam, they will receive an automated placement. Only students with questions or concerns
need to attend the math advising sessions at the Math Department on Monday, August 29.
Details in the COD.

For biology, students with a 5 on the AP Biology exam (or its equivalent) may take a placement
test to place out of one of the BIOL 101-104 course modules.

In English, introductory courses (ENGL 114ENGL 130) are offered in two categories: ENGL
114, Writing Seminars, and ENGL 115, Literature Seminars, are designed for freshmen to help
them develop their skills as writers of college-level prose and as insightful readers. Courses
numbered ENGL 120ENGL 130 are designed for freshmen who already feel confident doing
intensive, college-level course work. English advising sessions on Monday, August 29.

For foreign languages, students who score a 5 on the French, German, Italian, Latin, or
Spanish AP exam are automatically placed into L5, though students who are unsure should take
the exam. In all languages, except Spanish, students can start in L1 without taking an exam. For
Spanish, students with any previous formal study must take the exam.

Music requires a placement exam for students who wish to take intermediate theory courses,
and an audition for students who wish to take lessons for credit. Details in the COD.

Students with questions should first visit the Placement and Preregistration page of the 2020
website or the departmental website; if they cannot find the answer they are looking for, they
should consult the relevant DUS. As a reminder, all DUSes will be at the Academic Fair on
Tuesday, August, from 2 to 3:30 pm.
