Steve, Gary,

A quick word about my DVD shipments. I'm not labeling any of the discs, as I like to
leave that up to the recipient to label his discs in the manner he prefers. I try not to be
too intrusive -- preferring instead to respect each trader's personal preferences for
labeling and cataloging their inventory -- so when it comes to identifying each disc, I'm
merely marking in pencil the particular WHCA Tape Number inside the flap area of each
disc's envelope. Obviously the large WHCA log, sent in two parts (in two separate
emails), will provide you with the original WHCA log information for the particular
videotape that's been dubbed to DVD. But there is some additional information -- from
me personally -- that I now want to give you both as well . . .
Attached is my own guide to our first recordings of the extremely rare NBC TV live
anchored coverage from June 4-5, 1968 (i.e. our initial order of WHCA Tapes #1019,
#1020, #1021 and #1039). I was able to receive from an old NBC guy the network's
commercial log which states the air-times of the commercial breaks and which
commercials ran during those breaks. So the NBC commercial log has been of great
help to me. Also of help has been a sound recording of the NBC TV live coverage that
tragic night which was recorded by a viewer on reel-to-reel tape in the WNBC-TV New
York viewing area. The great thing is that this audio recording includes top-hour beeps
that were sent out every hour by WNBC that night (I have found no top-hour beeps
anywhere else but in the WNBC broadcasts of the NBC live coverage that night). So
these items have allowed me to pinpoint to the second the time-of-day clock times for
various events that night. Hope you enjoy my attached guide to the NBC TV live
coverage from June 4-5, 1968.
We did not include WHCA Tape #1022 in our first LBJ Library order. It is the NBC TV
live coverage that picks up from where WHCA Tape #1021 ends at around 2:30 am EDT
(or 11:30 pm PDT), which was half-an-hour before RFK came downstairs to the
ballroom and delivered his victory statement to his supporters in the Ambassador
Hotel's Embassy Room ballroom. Never fear though. Your first order will include
WHCA Tape #1039, which has the entire RFK victory statement on it and also has the
first minutes of NBC's live coverage of the RFK shooting. The reason we deliberately
did not include WHCA Tape #1022 in this first order was because some years ago,
before the LBJ Library received enough funding to hire a top-notch group to make their
WHCA video transfers from one-inch type A videotape to 21st Century formats, the
library used to make some pretty crummy dubs to VHS tape. At that time, WHCA #1022
was the only NBC broadcast from the peacock network's California Primary and RFK
shooting coverage that was available to view... and what some of us received was pretty
poor in quality. So we wanted to first make sure that this first order of DVDs -- using the
library's newly hired group -- would be of acceptable video quality (which we agree it
definitely is!)... and I wanted to also check with the LBJ Library to see if their WHCA

Tape #1022 would also be of the same higher DVD quality and I've been assured by
them that it will be. So we will include WHCA Tape #1022 in our second order.
By the way, here is a link to a CNN segment I produced and appeared in concerning the
RFK case (this aired on the 41st anniversary in June 2009) . . .

Hope my attached guide is of use to you,
Brad
P.S. Gary, I sent you your USPS tracking number earlier today. Your first order of DVDs should get there
hopefully Monday (Tuesday at the latest). Note: You probably won't see any recorded postal activity via
that tracking number for a few hours. Cheers

Brad

The LBJ Library has just informed me that 9 of the 20 videos in our new order are not viewable.
In response to this news, I have told them that they should go ahead with the 11 videos from our
order that are viewable and that Ill get back with them regarding the 9 that are not viewable.
Here is what I know. Only the WHCA videos that appear on the librarys 2015 viewable list are
currently available. The 9 videos at issue here are only on the librarys 2004 viewable list and are
not on the 2015 viewable list. That was something I knew but I had been mistaken in believing
that didnt matter.
This was entirely due to a misunderstanding on my part. During an email exchange with the
library some weeks ago, I apparently misinterpreted something theyd said to me and, as a result,
I'd carried the inaccurate impression that any WHCA videotapes appearing on either the 2004 or
the 2015 viewable lists were available (as opposed to those appearing on only the latter). My
screw-up entirely.
The following is our list of 20 videos in numerical order (by tape number). Highlighted in bold
are the 11 WHCA tapes that the library will be processing for us, as Ive requested. The other 9
(not highlighted) are the tapes the library cannot process at this time:
0072 Vietnam War Special Where Do We Stand on 10/24/67 (CBS)
0076 Vietnam War Special Where Do We Stand on 11/1/67 (CBS
0214B RFK Candidacy Announcement on 3/16/68 (NBC)
0242 LBJ Withdrawal Announcement on 3/31/68 (ABC)
0259 Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on 4/1/68 (NBC)
0290 Pre-MLK: Today Show (Apollo 6 launch?) on 4/4/68 (NBC)
0296 Pre-MLK: Cronkite News Early ET Edition on 4/4/68 (CBS)
0302 MLK Shooting Bulletins on 4/4/68 (ABC)
0799 Neb Primary on 5/14/68 (NBC, CBS)
0801 Neb Primary on 5/14/68 (CBS, ABC, NBC)
1016 Ca, SD Primaries & RFK Shooting on 6/4-5/68 (CBS)
1017 Ca, SD Primaries & RFK Shooting on 6/5/68 (CBS)
1018 Ca, SD Primaries & RFK Shooting on 6/5/68 (CBS)
1031 Ca, SD Primaries & RFK Shooting on 6/5/68 (CBS)
1029 RFK Shooting on 6/5/68 (ABC)
1030 RFK Shooting on 6/5/68 (ABC)
1682 Republican National Convention on 8/8/68 (CBS, NBC)
1866 Democratic National Convention on 8/28/68 (ABC, NBC)
2251 Apollo 7 Launch on 10/11/68 (NBC, WTTG)
2617 Cuba Ten Years of Castro & News on 11/19-20/68 (CBS)
Below are some prospective replacements, from the library's 2015 viewable list, that I would
recommend we go with in lieu of the 9 above that are not currently available to us:
I recommend we replace our two Vietnam War items (0072 and 0076) with the following item:
0157 Vietnam War: Weekend report on 2/4/68 (NBC/CH.4)
This is a report on the Vietnam War immediately following the early 1968 Tet Offensive. Among
those in our group expressing interest in Vietnam War items, there was some interest expressed
in the infamous Tet Offensive.
I recommend we replace our 4/1/68 Johnny Carson item (0259) with the following item from the
same date:
0250 ABC Evening News on 4/1/68 (ABC)

This is the TV networks nightly news program on the evening after LBJs announcement of his
decision not to run for another term as President. While we would have preferred the Carson joke
monologue reaction to LBJs announcement, this will still give us day-after reaction to the
decision and its an item that actually was on someones top-ten list.
I recommend we replace our MLK section (0290, 0296 and 0302) with the following three items:
0316 News on 4/5/68 (CBS)
This is news on morning immediately after the MLK assassination. Its the earliest MLK
assassination item on the 2015 viewables list.
0344 Special on 4/6/68 (ABC)
This is an ABC special on the riots in the wake of the MLK assassination. Members did express
interest in the riots.
0393 Specials on 4/9/68 (WTTG, CBS)
These are various special reports throughout the afternoon on the day of the MLK funeral. There
also was some interest expressed in the MLK funeral, attended by many notables such as the
Kennedys, Humphrey, Nixon, etc.
I recommend we replace our two political convention items (1682 and 1866) with the following
item:
1859 News Coverage on 8/28/68 (NBC, CBS)
This is news coverage of the Democratic National Convention on its third and most infamous
day, which is the DNC day that attracted the most interest from members.
I recommend we replace our Apollo 7 item with the following item:
2918 Apollo 8 on 12/24/68 (NBC)
This is news coverage of Apollo 8 and the U.S. arrival of the released Pueblo crew. Apollo 8 was
of great interest to a number of members.
In addition to the seven items above, I recommend we finish off our 9 replacements by going
with the following as our eighth and ninth replacement items:
0219 Meet The Press with guest RFK on 3/17/68 (NBC/CH.4)
This is NBCs MTP on the day after RFK announces his presidential candidacy. There was some
interest expressed in this MTP program.
2324 News special on 10/19-20/68 (ABC, NBC, CBS)
This is special coverage of the Kennedy-Onassis wedding, etc. There was some interest
expressed in this.
Guys, my apologies for my error regarding the 2004 WHCA viewables list. Eventually, I expect
those 9 items we wanted to be available through the new vendor now under contract with the
LBJ Library.

3RD ORDER
I arranged all the programs in chronological order, and i have just completed my fourth or fifth viewing of
them. Before i go back and enjoy my next go-round, i want so bad to tell you, Brad, how much this
means to me. All the hard work and diligent effort you expended in organizing this thing & making it
happen has really paid off royally & is still paying off and i am & always will be so grateful to you.
I was/am pleasantly surprised at the quality of both the sound & video, which with rare exceptions, is
excellent.
I was entirely mistaken in saying that, along with all the great stuff that i did want, i expected as a small
price to have to take a couple of duds this time that i didn't really care about. No, no! I was all wrong
about that! Now that i've seen it, i absolutely wouldn't give up a single piece of anything in this batch. Not
one thing! It's all great, every bit of it. If hereafter we have the great fortune for you to put together
another order, i'm going to keep my mouth SHUT!
In the very, very few instances where it duplicates a tiny part of some things i already have, the quality is
better & it fills in some gaps, and pieces that i didn't even know were missing.
One prime example. I have a part of ABC's coverage of RFK later than what we just got here (disc 1030, i
believe) that returns to The Dick Cavett Show (which then was on live in the daytime. Subsequently it
became a late night talk show opposite Carson.) I of course recognized David Susskind immediately, but
I have tried in vain for several years to determine who that other man was, sitting on the sofa. It bothered
me that he looked so familiar but i just could not place him. (Did any of you wonder about him?) Based
on a couple of things in this recently-acquired segment, i figured out that was Michael Harrington, author
of The Other America: Poverty in the United States. I knew i had that book and i found it on one of my
bookshelves. JFK had admired that book & it was a major impetus for LBJ's War on Poverty.
Especially precious are Sen. McCarthy's comments (on disc 1016, i believe) about his "lonely" campaign
in New Hampshire while other anti-war senators watching from the mountain, "lit signal fires and bonfires
and danced in the light of the moon." What a courageous genius he was.
Now you had said, Brad, that CBS signed off its Calif. Primary coverage and Walter went home. This was
well before Sen. Kennedy's speech at about midnight (approx. 3 am ET). After all, CBS (unlike the other
networks) had from the very outset declared the election for Kennedy, so they probably felt there was no
need to stay on the air.
Disc 1018 ends very abruptly, in mid-sentence as Walter is obviously closing out, and i can just picture the
poor guy who monitors the taping system in the White House basement, so ready to go home between 2
and 3 o'clock in the morning, shutting off the machine recording CBS. (WTOP has annonced a movie,
"Gideon of Scotland Yard"). Next, much later, he turns off ABC which is prolongedly playing its theme
music, and he waits and waits for NBC to close, which it never does.
Then all of a sudden like a thunder bolt, Howard K. Smith comes back on the air & the guy hurries to get a
tape going again in the ABC machine. And struggles to keep recording on the NBC side. CBS stays
offline (most of its affiliates all over the country having signed off for the night) and bringing up the rear
tardily comes on with Joseph Benti. This the guy doesn't notice right away and starts taping only
belatedly. Nevertheless he got a lot more than anybody else & thanks to him we have a much clearer
picture than we ever had before of the breaking news bulletin by CBS. The graveyard shift is tough. It's
hard to see through your eyelids, which keep dropping down.
I would say in answer to the question that was asked about this, Unless somebody like Phil Gries just
happened to be up at that unholy hour taping the TV coverage, i would say this is the most we're ever
going to get.

All of these recordings are really wonderful and i just can't thank you enough Brad. I hope everybody in
our group is in the best of health and filled with happiness. Regards, JIM

Guys,
Everyone should now have his own USPS Priority Mail shipment tracking number.
As I mentioned on Thursday, we will have a bonus this time around. It will be a double
bonus... two extra TV programs, both free of charge.
The extras that the LBJ Library has provided me are WHCA #0158 and WHCA #0246.
These were sent to make up for a couple of library errors I had brought to their
attention immediately after receiving the initial shipment of 10 videos. The library had
sent me WHCA #0214-A CBS coverage on 3/16/68 (even though I had requested
WHCA #0214-B NBC coverage) and it had sent me WHCA #0242-A NBC coverage on
3/31/68 (even though I had requested WHCA #0242 ABC coverage). Had the library
caught these two errors early on, the library could have explained to me at that time that
it actually does not have a viewable version of #0214-B or a viewable version of #0242
-- and this would have given me a chance to have then ordered two other videos
instead. In any case, the library has kindly made up for these two errors by sending me
#0158 and #0246.
#0158 was placed on the same DVD disc as #0157.
#0246 was placed on its own separate DVD disc.
Thus you will be getting 22 TV programs (or "titles" as the library refers to them) instead
of only 20 -- altogether, the number of DVD discs will be 21 discs.
So we have made out very well. Here's what is now on the way to you by USPS Priority
