In 1954, Jacques Fesch, the 24-year-old son of a wealthy Belgian banker,

killed a policeman during an armed robbery in Paris. Cocky and arrogant
throughout his trial he ______ to prison and executed by guillotine three years
later. Now he's being recommended for sainthood.
How can a notorious killer ______ a saint? It helps to have a powerful
advocate in the church. Paris Archbishop Jean-Marie Lustiger based his appeal
on Lesch's devotion to Christianity, including his jailhouse conversion to
Catholicism. He said that sanctifying Fesch, despite the viciousness of his crime,
would provide "great hope for those who despise themselves, who consider
themselves irremediably lost." This was precisely the reason that the Paris police
union denounced the suggestion: "It teaches delinquents that (no matter what
they do) they can always redeem themselves."

ATENO! ESTA PROVA CONTM 40 QUESTES.

Whichever way you look at it, Lee Harvey Oswald is the central character in the
assassination of President Kennedy. Whether he was the lone gunman or a member of
a hit squad or a total innocent caught up in a government conspiracy is something that
we will probably never know. But, whatever the truth may be, its inevitable that Oswald
will have a part to play in it.
Oswald was born in 1939 and had a troubled childhood. He left school when he
was 16 and joined the Marines at 17. Getting disciplined and court martialed, Oswald
was released from active duty after three years of service. It was then that Oswald made
his supposed defection to Russia. He arrived in Moscow in October 1959, complaining
loudly about the American system and renouncing his citizenship. The Russians werent
as welcoming as he had expected, however, and when they refused to extend his visa,
he was distraught. He reacted by cutting his wrists in his Moscow hotel room.
Eventually, Oswald was allowed to stay, though only as a stateless person.
In May 1962 Oswald arrived in Fort Worth, Texas. Then he moved to Dallas. Yet,
Oswald remained troubled, again angry about his countrys politics. He also bought
himself a rifle.
On November 22, 1963, a gunman from the Texas School Book Depository
where Oswald had got a job is believed to have fired shots into President Kennedys
motorcade, killing Kennedy. Oswald was arrested a little over an hour later. Two days
later, as police were moving him from the city jail, Jack Ruby stepped out of the crowd
and shot Oswald dead. Without a trial it will always be impossible to know if Oswald had
been responsible for the Kennedy assassination.
Countless theories have been put forward, some of them discounting Oswalds
role altogether. No doubt the speculation will continue, but its unlikely that well ever
know for sure what Oswald really did and whether he did it alone.

Natures Choice
Human reproduction is a random process requiring an excess of gamete and
embryo production. In the fragile biological endeavour to produce a viable fetus, eggs
and embryos are lost every day on a scale that staggers the imagination. Even before
birth, humans are endowed with copious, even profligate, amounts of gametes: at about
the twentieth week of gestation a female fetus has as many as seven million potential
eggs in her ovaries, but these begin to die off naturally through a process called atresia.
At birth there are only about two million of these incipient eggs left, and at puberty
between 300.000 and 400.000. These astounding numbers represent about one egg
lost per woman every four minutes. Of course, males also lose sperm cells at
phenomenal rates; roughly 1000-plus sperm per second are produced from puberty
onwards and millions of sperm either go to waste after ejaculation or remain in the
testes until they die. The reason for this apparent excess is that humans are a relatively
infertile species compared with most other mammals.
On top of this at least thirty per cent of all fertilized eggs are miscarried before
they implant in the uterus. Beyond these early spontaneous abortions, about fifteen per
cent of all clinically recognized pregnancies end in miscarriage, or fetal resorption in
some cases. For women over thirty five, rates increase to twenty per cent and are even
higher among older women.
The majority of these miscarriages occur during the first three months of a
pregnancy, the same period during which most elective abortions are carried out. Many
of the early spontaneous abortions occur either because of chromosomal abnormalities,
or inadequate hormonal support the embryo would therefore never survive the gestation
period.

PROVA DE LNGUA INGLESA - CDIGO 11

Shyness
Shyness is a nearly universal human trait. Almost everyone has bouts of it, and
half of college students surveyed describe themselves as shy. But at some life juncture,
according to a national survey, one out of eight people become so timid that they suffer
from social phobia. During certain kinds of encounters, the heart races, palms sweat, the
mouth goes dry, words vanish, thoughts become cluttered and an urge to escape takes
over.
Life experiences can mold the brain to become more or less shy over time.
Psychologists note that the brain seems to attack a fear marker (place, time,
background music, etc.) of a traumatic situation. So, for example, when a child gets a
tongue-lashing from a teacher, the student will feel nervous the next few times he or
she steps into the classroom. But sometimes the brain is too good at making those
associations and the anxiety is triggered by any classroom or teacher. The children may
stop inviting friends over, speak only to certain people or refuse to go to school. By
avoiding the very situations they need to learn social skills, these children diminish their
ability to cope.
Social phobia hit Steve Fox so hard in high school that girls made a sport of
saying hello just to watch him turn beet-red.He refused to speak in class and never
dated. His father sent him to a doctor, and a combination of medication and therapy
helped him to recover. Recently Fox gave a speech in front of 1700 people, and he is
married to one of the cheerleaders who used to tease him.
Bernardo J. Carducci, director of The Shyness Research Institute at Indiana
University Southeast, is convinced that shifting the focus away from the self is the most
therapeutic thing a shy person can do.

I know, I know no one here to say hello
