ASSIGNMENT IN SOCIAL DIMENSION

MAAM EMMA LOISA JAVIER

Curriculum Analyzed:
Grade: 11/12: 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World
General Description: This course aims to engage students in appreciation and critical study of
21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World encompassing their various
dimensions, genres, elements, structures, contexts, and traditions.
By the subject name itself, we can see that the subject points down to the appreciation and
learning of the literatures present in our country and in the world. This subject is very vital
because aside from studying the history itself, students can also study the literature of the
different places in order for them to have a good grasp about the culture and history of these
places or groups. However, we believe that some aspects of this curriculum lack encouragement
to study about certain cultures. At this rate, we would like to discuss my observation as well as
the reasons why we believe these cultures should be included in the current K-12 curriculum for
the above stated subject.
1. Culture to Connect related subjects from the different learning areas In this
subject, the main focus deals on literature itself. It doesnt provide for certain connections
in other subject matter like MAKABAYAN and English. Literature subject should be a
tool to understand a places history or how a group constructs or writes a literary piece.
2. Culture of Nationalism Just a little bit of this. We believe we should have a separate
subject for literature of the Philippines and Literatures of the world. Incorporating this in
only one subject may cause us not to fully understand the Biuag and Malana story or may
forget some salient parts of nationalism and patriotism in the Noli or El Fili.
3. Culture to be a concerned citizen this literature subject focuses only on the technical
aspects of the subject and doesnt dissect the students on what values they may learn
which can help them become responsible citizens of the country.

4. Culture of ability to cope in a fast changing world with the advent of ASEAN
Integration, our literature subject should put emphasis on how we can get competitive
advantage by understanding these literary pieces. I believe we should know the advantage
of learning the Iliad and Odyssey or the Mahabharata and its significance to
understanding culture of the Greece and India. In this case, we can easily adapt to their
culture and cause a win-win situation on our behalf.
With our sentiments given, we believe that our curriculum developers and enhancers should
look into some of these comments for the betterment of our education system. We would like
also to disclaim that we are not against K-12 and we will never be. We just need to look into
some delicate parts which will improve the former for the benefit not just of this generation but
for the future generations as well. Peace out!
