Dear Liz,
In my first year on this job I was in heaven, even though there was a lot of information to
learn, and fast! In my second year on the job I got to try a lot of new things and my boss
and I were in constant communication.

In my third year, the learning started to slow down. My boss relied on me more but
talked with me less. At my third annual performance review, he said, I dont have a lot
to tell you. Youre more than competent at the job. He gave me the second-best
possible rating and a 3.5% raise.
My boss hasnt talked with me about my goals, my progress or my career path since my
third annual review, two years ago this month.

Ive spent two more years in this job and I havent learned a thing. I got a 2% raise last
year and this year, my boss said, I cant truthfully say that youre advancing, so Im
going to have to start tapering off with your pay increases even though hes already
been tapering off for over a year.
I reminded him of the projects Ive proposed and the cross-training Ive asked for. Im
tired of trying to sell my ideas and getting shot down or ignored. There are two
employees in the department who have been here longer than I have. One of them has
worked here for eight years and the other person has been here for 10 years.

Still, the company is 18 years old and apart from the CEO himself, I havent met anybody
whos worked for the company for more than 10 years. So what does that tell you?
Nobody stays around for a very long time.
Should I start a stealth job search, or am I missing a step? Is there a way to jump-start
my career in this company, without changing jobs?
