coolchainfacilityattheLogisticsDistrictinDubaiSouth,formerlyDubai
WorldCentral,including4,600sqmetresforpharmaproducts.

BeforethefacilitiesatDubaiSouthandDubaiinternationalAirportopened
theirsegregatedareas,pharmashipmentswerehandledatEmirates
generalcoolchaincargoareas.
ThesegregationfollowedtheEuropeanUnionsstricterguidelines,
includingthosecallingforappropriatetemperaturecontrolsformedical
productsduringtransportation,issuedin2013.
EmiratesSkyCargohandlespharmaceuticalproductssuchasdiabetesand
cancermedication,bloodderivativesandvaccines.
Traditionally,pharmacargohasbeenafractionofthetotalcargovolume
forEmirates.InthefinancialyearendingMarch,itcarried11,000tonnesof
pharmacargooutof2.5milliontonnes.
"Withthepharmacargo,itisdifficulttomaintainanaccountbecauseyou
canloseanaccountovernightifyoumessuponeshipmentbecausethe
valueoftheseshipmentsareinmillions,"saidNabilSultan,thedivisional

SomeofthebusiestroutesforpharmacargomovementforEmirates
remainbetweenmanufacturinghubsandconsumermarkets.
About50percentofglobalpharmacargotransportationintermsof
volumeisfromEurope,especiallyGermanyandSwitzerland,toAsia,and
30percentisfromIndiatotheUS,MrSultansaid.Meanwhile,airfreight
costsareexpectedtoremainflatthisyearamidaslowdowninglobal
economicactivity.
"Wehavebeenabletogodowntowhatwethinkisprofitablebusiness,but
wearenotgrowingthewaywegrewacoupleofyearsago,andthisyear
wewouldseeafarmoreflatsituationintermsofcargovolumes,"said
HenrikAmbak,theseniorvicepresidentforcargooperationsworldwideat

Marketforcesdrivetheaircargoprices,andthisyearcargovolumesare
expectedtobeflat.
