The controversy is not simply about tap versus bottled water, most people drink
both, knowing the importance of drinking plenty of water. What they may not know
is that some bottled water may not be as pure as they expect.
In 1999, the Natural Resources Defence Council, a non-profit organisation in
the United States, tested more than 1000 bottles of water from 103 brands. This
happens to be the most recent major report on bottled water safety.
While noting that most bottled water is safe, the organisation found that at least
one sample of a third of the brands contained bacterial or chemical contaminants,
including carcinogens, in levels exceeding industry standards.
It was raining cats and dogs and the motorcyclist, who was a suspected snatch
thief, tried to evade a police road block. A policeman fired a warning shot. Upon hearing
that, the suspect lost control and hit 5 people, who were seeking shelter, before he was
flung to the middle of the road. He laid motionless. Unfortunately, a senior citizen and a
toddler perished in this freak accident.
8 From the extract, which one of the statements is true?
A There was a heavy drizzle.
B Three people died in the accident.
C The policeman did not intend to shoot the thief.
D The road block was set up to catch the snatch thief.

Questions 1 6 -2 5
Read the following article and answer the questions that follow.
Be Socially Admired
Have you ever admired people who seem to know just
what to say in a social setting? Having the ability to start and
maintain positive social relationships with others is important.
Having good skills means you have the know-how to
do what is expected of you in everyday social life. Building good social skills requires a lot of
practice, and the more you mix around in good social settings, the better you will be at
adjusting to company. Here is a typical example of good social skills in a conversation.
To start a conversation, look at the face of the person you want to talk to.
Alternatively, you may choose to look at the eyes instead. Greet the person by name. Avoid
standing too close or too far away. Wait until there is a pause in the conversation before you
start talking. Try to add information to the conversation.
During a group conversation, always look at the people. Try to recognise and
understand the feelings and thoughts of the people you talk to by watching their body
language and facial expressions. Do not change topics when others have not finished talking
on that subject. When you change a topic, it should usually be related to what the others
were talking about earlier. Participate actively in the conversation. Add information you know
about the topic. Avoid touching people when speaking unless they are close friends. To have
fun talking, use lots of gestures.
When ending the conversation, use appropriate closing
expressions like, I see that class is starting. Compliment the
other person, You have really good ideas. It was a pleasure
talking with you. Thank the other person, Thanks for sharing
with me. Use a final closing statement like, Ok, see you later.
Bear in mind not to monopolise the conversation.
Now, you are all ready to be a social star. You will never
be a wallflower again!

[Time suggested : 50 minutes]
Questions 26 - 31 are based on the following passage.
1
Five-year-old Jocelyn Rojas spent all day playing happily with her friends
outside her grandmothers apartment building. Her mom, Jaimee, kept her
eyes on the little girl from a window. At about 4 p.m., Jocelyn walked around
the corner of the building to get her bicycle and disappeared.
I took my eyes off her for five minutes, and she was gone, said Jaimee. The
frantic mother called out to her daughter as she searched the complex. When
she saw that Jocelyns bike was still there and found an old credit card her
daughter had been playing with, near the bike racks, Jaimee called 911.
A short time later, police officers and firefighters swarmed the area,
blockading streets and searching the suburban neighbourhood. Officers
brought in a search-and-rescue bloodhound, and officials handed out a photo
of Jocelyn. At least 100 people scoured the streets.
1119/2
Temar Boggs, 15, and his friends heard the news and walked over to
Jocelyns block to check out the situation. Later, Temar was approached with
a photo of Jocelyn. I felt that I was going to find her, he said. As he sped
away on a borrowed BMX, his friend Chris Garcia, 13, rode alongside him.
The boys searched without a plan, simply keeping a sharp eye out as they
pedaled past the streets.
10
15
Then, Temar spotted a maroon sedan veering down a side street and looping
back, as if the driver were unfamiliar with the neighbourhood. He and Chris
followed it. The sedan pulled an abrupt U-turn at the top of a hill as a group of
police officers and firefighters had congregated there. The car passed the
boys on their bikes as it circled back down the hill. Temar made eye contact
with the man behind the wheel and spied a tiny blond girl in the passenger
seat. Temar instantly knew it was her.
25
The boys chased the car. Temar, a middle school athlete in track, basketball,
and football, thought he might jump on the hood or otherwise scare the driver
into letting the girl out. For several minutes, Temar and Chris trailed the car,
but the driver kept moving, slowly winding his way through the
neighbourhood.
30
Finally, the driver pulled the car to the curb a few hundred feet ahead of them
and pushed open the passenger-side door. Jocelyn slipped out of the car.
Temar got off his bike, and she ran into his arms. The little girl wasnt crying
at all. She just asked to see her mother, Temar said. The kidnapper sped
away and Temar brought her to her mother.

After being returned to her mother, Jocelyn was taken to the police
headquarters and questioned. She told the police that the kidnapper had
driven his car up and chatted pleasantly with her about her bike. Then, she
said, he lunged across the front seat and grabbed her neck, forcing her into
the car. A police report later identified the alleged abductor as a 63-year-old
sex offender. He is still at large.
Neil Harkins, chief of the Manheim Police Department, said the boys heroic
act of kindness was something rare. For young boys to do that, it was a very
brave thing.

Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow.
The Living Photograph
My small grandmother is tall there,
straight-back, white broderie anglaise shirt,
pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun,
a kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine,
white hand in black hand.
Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.
It was true after all, that look.
My tall grandmother became small.
Her back round and hunched
Her soup forgot to boil.
She went to the awful place grandmothers go
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.
But there she is still,
In the photo with me at three,
The crinkled smile is still living, breathing.
