Elements of Literature Assignment

1. Choose a television show that you watch regularly or a movie that you have
seen recently. (Do not choose a reality TV show; it may not work for this
assignment.)
2. Determine how the Elements of Literature show up in the show/movie you
selected. Please answer the questions below in complete sentences.

What is the name of the TV show or movie you selected? (Ex. The Walking
Dead is a horror/drama series about a group of people trying to survive the
zombie apocalypse.)

2. Where is the set of the show/movie? Include the place (town as well as major
houses, buildings, or hangouts) as well as the time period. (Ex. The Walking
Dead started out in the outskirts of Atlanta in present day. The series has
since had several locations to include a prison and Northern Virginia.
3. List and briefly describe each main character and give a few of their
character traits. (Ex. Rick Grimes is the leader of the group, and he has a son
named Carl. Before the apocalypse, he was a sheriff deputy.)
4. Describe the plot of your movie or one episode of your TV series. Describe
each part of the plot, listing the exposition, which events are rising action,
what the climax is, which events are a part of the falling action, and how
events concluded. You can draw a plot diagram if you like.
5. What is the main conflict that occurs on the show/in the movie? Identify the
type of conflict (internal or external; if external is it character vs. character,
character vs. nature, or character vs. society?), the characters involved in the
conflict, and whether or not they resolve it.
6. From what point of view is the story told? Do we see all the characters in the
show/movie equally or is it narrated by one character in particular?
7. What was the creator of the show/movie or the writers MOST LIKELY purpose
in creating their product? To inform the public? If so, about what? To
entertain? To make fun of someone or something?
8. What message about life is the show or movie trying to get across to its
viewers? This is an attempt at discerning theme.
