Welcome BACK New Leaders!
Last year I had the amazing opportunity to teach many of you in 6th grade and
experience your 1st year in middle school. For my 5th year at OWN, however my 19th
year of teaching I am excited for all the new faces, new opportunities and for the
extraordinary year we will have that will be filled with new memories and tons of
learning.
Just a little bit about me. I am the youngest of five and I was born and raised in New York
City. I have a Masters in General Ed. and Special Ed. and I also have a Culinary Degree.
YES, I am a Chef and I love food! I have a strong background in reading and writing
instruction with students from first grade to high school. I love learning and growing as
an individual and I hope to bring that passion to life in everyone of my students. I cant
wait for this new journey to start.

Dear 6th Grade Students & Parents:

Welcome to ELA 6! Im looking forward to working
with all of you this year and hope that you are
excited about this opportunity to learn new things.
As the year begins, Id like to let you know a bit
about what you can expect.
In ELA 6, students will continue the reading and
writing workshops in which they participated in 6th
grade. Each day we will read independently and
together, and will work on writing projects
independently and together. Each evening, students
will be required to read and to complete their
reading logs. The reading log will be checked each
day and must be initialed by a parent. If a student
forgets his/her reading log at school, the parent
may initial the Student Planner instead. However
all information must be later entered on your log.
Students are expected to read 40 minutes every
night.
In writing, students will be asked to make entries,
usually at least one page long, in their writing
notebooks. This will take place 3 times each week.
Like the reading log, the written entries will always
be checked when they are due. Students will also
be working on one writing project every month. The
project will require students to complete a draft,
to make revisions, and to produce a final written
piece.

Homework follows a very regular schedule: writing is

due Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. A reading
response is due Tuesday and Thursday. Reading logs
are expected to be completed each night and filled
out completely. Students have received instructions
on how to complete the writing and reading
homework.
Students must remember to bring the appropriate
supplies to class each day. In ELA 6, students will
need 2 Red folders, 2 marble notebooks, pens/
pencils and Post-Its.
It is not acceptable for
students to use a binder or to share a notebook for
reading and writing. Please be sure to bring in new
Post-Its from time-to-time as we will be using them
throughout the year.
I am always glad to hear from parents and students,
so please do not hesitate to contact me if you have
any questions or concerns. You may reach me at my
e-mail, sorozco@owncs.org, or by phone at
718-274-2902 ext. 113 after 3:30.

I wish you all a wonderful year!
