CatalogDescription:
Freshmanseminarforstudentsinterestedinbecomingmiddleorhighschoolteachersofmathor
science.Meets8weeksforstudentstogainanunderstandingofeffective,researchbasedteaching
strategies.IncludesanopportunitytoexperienceteachinginaK5classroom.Pass/nopassorletter
grade.
GoalsandObjectives:
PS5introducesstudentstotheteachingandlearningofscienceandmathematicsinelementaryschool
classroomsanditprovidesstudentswithopportunitiestodetermineiftheymightbeinterestedinpursuinga
careerinteaching.Studentswillbeplacedinanelementaryschoolwithadiversestudentpopulationinalocal
schooldistrictandwillobserve,assist,andteachscienceand/ormathematicslessonsinanexemplarymentor
teachersclassroom.Theaccompanyingseminarcoursewillintroducestudentstothetheoryandpracticeof
designinganddeliveringexcellentscienceandmathematicsinstructionattheelementaryclassroomlevel.
Studentswillbeintroducedtoinquirybasedlearningpractices,Californiastandards,learningdifferencesin
children,andthecognitiveabilityofelementarystudentsasitrelatestotheintroductionofconcepts,curricular
planning,classroommanagementandlearningassessment.
CaT1CourseObjectives:
Introducetheprofessionofteachingasapossiblecareerpath.Studentswillobserveandengageinthe
professionalnatureofteaching,includingworkingcollaborativelywithotherteachers,identifyingand
sharingbestpractices,andbeingaccountableformeetingprofessionalstandardsover20hoursor8to
15fieldexperiences.Fieldexperiencesincludepreparingmaterials,tutoringindividuals,teaching
smallgroups,gradingpapers,takingoverclassroomroutines,andteachingaminimumof3lessons.
Understandhowstatestandardsinscienceandmathematicsaffectcurriculardesignandhowcurricular
designpreparesstudentsforsubsequentlearning.
Participatein5Emodellessondemonstrationstaughtinclassbymasterteachersandadaptedfrom
exemplarysources.

Criticallyobservebothteachingandlearninginscienceandmathematics,payingparticularattentionto
theroleofmisconceptionsandsensemakingasstudentslearnnewinformation.Learnhowtoassessif
studentsarelearningthematerial.
Recognizewhyadeepunderstandingofthescienceandmathsubjectmatterisessentialfor
understandinghowstudentslearn,particularlyinmakingsenseoftherichvarietyofwaysindividuals
mayapproachthesameproblem.
Understandthedifferencebetweenlearnercenteredandteachercenteredcurriculaandbeableto
distinguishbetweenclassroomapproachesthatareinquirybased(handson)andthosethatare
informational.
Understandthediversityoflearnersinaclassroomandevaluateteachingmethodsthataddressthe
varietyofwaysstudentslearnandmakesenseofnewinformation.
ReviewandevaluateissuesofteachingEnglishLanguageLearnersmathematicsandscience.
Providestudentstheopportunitiestodevelopinquirybased,5Elessonsthattheywillteachinthe
elementaryclassroom.Theselessonsshouldhavestatededucationalobjectivesandincludeameansto
assesswhetherthelessonmetthelearningobjectivesstated.
Providestudentswiththeopportunitytoreflectonanddiscusswhattheyhaveobserved.Studentswill
receivebothwrittenandverbalfeedbackfrommasterandmentorteachersabouttheirlessonstoassist
intheirreflections.
Introducestudentstotheconceptthatasclassroomassistantsorteachers,theyarerolemodelsto
studentsandthattherearesignificantresponsibilitiesinherentinassumingthisrole.Studentsinthis
programwillneedtofocusonhowtheydress,talk,respectthemselvesandtheirstudents,andhow
importanttheseelementsareincreatingarespectfulandinclusiveclassroomatmospherewhere
studentslearnmosteffectively.Theywilllearntoassurethatallstudentsareadequatelypreparedin
safety,security,andemergencyprocedures.

requirements,andfinancialsupport.

Yourontimeattendanceandparticipationinallofourclasssessionsiscriticalto

forcesyoutomissaclass,however,wewillworkwithyouindividuallyonan
appropriateassignmenttosubstituteforthelosttime.Studentswhomissallor

TypicalClassSession:
Weeklyclassmeetingswillinclude30minutesofdebriefingandreflectiononfield
experiencesfollowedby1hourofpedagogy/educationalresearchandwillconclude
withstudentsparticipatingina5Elessonorpresentingandgivingfeedbackona5E
lessontheyhavewritten.
