Purpose
To determine the formula of a copper sulfate (CuSo4) hydrate.
Materials
Crucible, scale, hydrate, spoon, Bunsen burner
Procedure
Include a step-by-step procedure for what you did in the lab, written in your own words.
19.508 grams
21.343 grams
Mass of hydrate
1.835 grams
20.682 grams
Mass of dehydrate
1.174 grams
Calculations
1. Subtract to find the mass of just the hydrate.
21.343-19.508=1.835 g
2. Subtract to find the mass of just the dehydrate.
20.682-19.508=1.174 g
3. Subtract to find the mass of hydrate in the sample.
1.835-1.174=0.661 g
4. Convert 0.661 grams to moles
0.661 g*1 mol/18.015 g H2O=0.037 mol H2O
5. Convert 1.174 grams to moles
1.174 g*1 mol/ 159.609 g CuSO4=0.007 mol CuSO4
6. CuSO4*5H2O
In the discussion section of this lab report, you will want to discuss the importance for heating the hydrate for
a sufficient amount of time. Also address the following questions in your discussion:
1. How would you expect the final measured mass of the anhydrate to change if the hydrate was not
heated for a sufficient length of time, and why?
I would expect the final mass to be greater because when the hydrate was heated, it lost some
mass.
2. How would this change in the measured final mass affect the calculated formula of the hydrate?
Explain your answer to these questions thoroughly.
It would be much greater because there wouldnt be any dehydrate to take from the hydrate.
In this lab, we measured an empty crucible, the crucible and hydrate, and the crucible and dehydrate. We
also determined the hydrate formula of CuSO4 with these measurements.
