Introduction
To implement a safe and effective P.E. environment, I must have and maintain a complete
classroom management plan. This will include rules, consequences, time management strategies,
and themes for my P.E. classes.

My Gym and classroom will be a place where students can grow and feel a part of something
great. Whether if we are in the gym, outside, or in the classroom my class will be full of positive
encouragement as well as a fun place to learn. I will establish this by having a new motivational
quote on the board each day, as well as having daily activities to keep my class from getting
stale by focusing on old experiences and new skills. My class will also remain safe. This includes
students being responsible physically and emotionally. Everyone will be teammates even when
competing.

Establishing Rule
Establishing rules and protocols is the backbone of every classroom. In the physical education
environment it is the backbone. In the P.E. setting we run a much greater risk for injuries, as
well as disagreements in competitions. The rules are in place to keep everyone safe and allow
everyone the greatest possibility of learning possible. Just as the rules are important so are the
consequences of breaking said rules. From day one students will be given a set of my rules and
where they can be located inside my gym and or classroom. I will also ask students to help
implement some new rules they see fit to keep the class as safe, fun, and educational as
possible. The rules and consequences are in place to keep students from distracting one
another, preventing injuries, and allowing for more instruction and activity. My set of rules will
be the same for each class level and each student. They will be the same from the beginning of
the year to the end, with some minor modifications. My students will be expected to learn the
rules within the first few days of class to allow class to continue learning without taking steps
back. It is my job to make sure students will be given plenty of examples of behaviors I accept
and do not accept.

Rules
Rule #1
Read the board upon entering the gym and get started right away.
Rule #2
Be safe, which means watch where you are going, and keep your hands to yourself.
Rule #3
Try hard and have fun!
Rule #4
Wear proper clothing and shoes to be able to participate each day. This includes school provided shirt
and shorts. Appropriate shoes must be worn to be able to participate. No heels! No Sandals! No Crocs!

Consequences
The consequences for breaking my rules will be known by all my students. They will know the
consequences as well as they know the rules. The consequences are fair for every student.
Students will understand that the consequences can change based on the severity of the
offense. Students will also make sure that they understand and think about what they did to
break whatever rule is broken, so they can reflect on the situation and better their judgement.
1st offense
Student will receive a verbal warning with me telling him or her the desired behavior.
2nd offense
Student will sit out as long as I see fit (based on situation) until he or she can tell me what the
issue was and how they could avoid the same situation in the future.
3rd offense
Student will be asked to sit out for the remainder of the class period and a phone call will be
made to the parents and a response paper will be in order on how to conduct themselves.
Clothing issues
If a child forgets his or her clothes: The first time I will offer a box of clothes that I have
provided these situations. The second time will be a deduction of points, with the box still
being an option. The third time will be further deduction, and intervention with parents and
student. The student will also be responsible for sweeping the gym after each class period they
attend for a week.

Major/Severe Issues
In the event of a major or severe issue such as the continuous breaking of rules, or if a violent
act towards another student, myself, or themselves, that student will be sent to administration
or administration will be contacted to get them into the gym or wherever location the class is
located. The parents will also be informed of the situation to let them know what occurred and
what the consequences are.
Routines
Routines will be highly important in my classroom. The routines I implement will be consistent
for every class and every student. My students will be expected to know what to do from the
time they change into their clothes and how they enter the gym and leave the gym. This will
insure all students will be able to maximize their learning environment and the amount of time
we have available. These routines will decrease the time students are sedentary and allow for
maximal education and activity time.

Starting/Stopping
My students will give me their full attention and stop whatever they are doing whenever a
whistle is blown twice. Whenever I want my students to start an activity I will either indicate it
by shouting Go or blowing my whistle once. They will do that activity until my whistle is
blown three times which means for them that the activity is over and run over to where ever I
am to receive instructions.
Entering/Leaving
Elementary- my students will come to the gym in a quiet and straight line from their other
classroom. Students will begin by entering and running two laps or whatever I see fit based on
behavior of entering, and then they will go to their assigned spots on the gym floor. I will do an
attendance check while students are entering the gymnasium and check again after laps. While
my students are leaving the gym they will be allowed to line up for drinks at the water fountain
and proceed to line up at the door in a straight, quiet, and safe manner.
Secondary- When the bell rings to come into class, Students will have 5-7 mins to get dressed
and into the gym. Students will be expected to come into the gym and read the board for warm
up exercise, and what they can look forward to during the class period. I will then take
attendance while students are stretching in their assigned spots in the gym. I will then
introduce the activity I have planned and what skills they should be focusing on. Ten minutes
before the class period is supposed to end everyone will congratulate each other on a good day
and head back to their specific locker room. Students will sit in the locker room and wait for the
bell to ring before they are released for their other classes.

Equipment
The equipment needed for each class will be ready before school begins. I will have the
equipment set off to the side in the gym or on the side by the field. Students will be informed
that they are to leave the equipment alone unless given other directions. The equipment will
also be handled safely and properly by students or it will not be available to them. Upon
instruction students will bring equipment back to the sideline or back wall of the gym, unless
they are told to leave it where it is for the next class. My first period class will be the students
that I give the equipment to as they are coming into the gym, and my last period class will be
the class that hands in the equipment as they are leaving the gym.
Bathroom
My bathroom policy for my students will be easy. If there is a student that needs to use the
bathroom they ask and depending on location I will allow it. Except for High School level
students they must use the bathroom in the locker room before or after class. If bathroom
behavior becomes a problem then I will only allow one student at a time.
Water Break
There will be certain times I allow for students to take a water break. I will incorporate this into
the activities and use the transition time, to allow students to get a drink. Hydration is
important I will stress to my students that they drink plenty of water throughout the day and
not just during exercise. If the students are capable of being respectful during water breaks,
students will be sent one at a time. Water bottles are allowed in my classroom, but are only
accessible when I see fit.

Partners/Groups
Students will be either numbered off for groups or they I will allow them to pick partners until
there is a problem. If there is a problem students will have designated partners set up by me
before class time. When instructed to find a partner I will instruct that students are to line up
back to back against the base line and have them go to opposite teams.

Starting the year off right is very important. By setting the tone and pace of the class, it could
either draw students in or leave them feeling lost. I will get off to a good start by making sure
that my students are motivated, determined, competitive, and bringing a good attitude into the
classroom.
Describe and Demonstrate
The first day of class I will go over my rules and regulations. I will tell students what my
expectations of them are, and demonstrate to my students the importance of following the
rules to maintain a quality and cooperative environment for everyone.

Practice
Practice is the key to success. Practice is hard work and should allow for students to analyze
situations that occur in and out of the classroom. Students will practice following the rules and
maintaining a safe and fun environment in my classroom every day.

Page |9

Provide Feedback
I will always give my students feedback, whether positive, or negative. It is my job to make sure
students understand to correct their movements or continue to do what they are doing. I will
always make sure to emphasize the desired behavior. Feedback is a cornerstone of
achievement. My students, whether they are doing well or struggling, will be encouraged to
keep up the good work, or be provided with more efficient ways to demonstrate or execute a
skill. I also expect students to give me feedback on how they feel they are doing and what they
can do to improve their skills and movements. Using feedback will allow my students to
understand if they are achieving or right on the cusp of breaking through.

Setting Performance Standards

My students will know what my standards are for performance. Students should understand
that they are in P.E. to better themselves each and every day not just in school but outside as
well. Students will be expected to participate and give it their all each and every day. I will
always stress the importance of listening to instructions and following rules. Those are in place
for students to succeed.

Maintaining Consistency
My classroom routines, and rules will stay consistent and be the same all year depending on
behaviors, and students will know them as second nature because consistency builds structure.
