AlainN.B.,blamedChristianpassengersfortheonsetofastormandforcedsixmenofftheboat
toacertaindeath.Accordingtosomeofthe29survivorsfromthemorethan50subSaharanmigrantswhoboardedtheboatnear
Nador,northernMorocco,theaccusedblamedtheroughseaswhichwererockingtheboatontheprayersledbyaCatholicpastoronboard.
Witnessestoldinvestigatorsthatthecaptainandhissecondincommand,anotherCameroonianmanwhodiedinSpainbeforethetrialbegan,
believedthattheweatherworsenedeverytimethevictimsprayed.

AlainN.B.wasawarethatthevictimscouldnotpossiblysurviveandthattheywoulddie,eitherbydrowning,fromthecold,orfromthe
physicalinjuriestheyhadsuffered.Hewasawareofthelowtemperature,theroughseasandthegreatdistancefromthecoastandtheabsence
ofanynearbyboatswhichcouldrescuethem.Theprosecutorhasaskedforsixseparatetermsof15yearsfor

murderwiththeaggravatingfactorofreligiousmotivation,amountingtoa90yearsentence.
Onlyonebodywhichmayhavebelongedtoavictimwasfoundwashedashore.

OnDecember5,2014,searescueservicesinAlmerafound29survivorsonboardthe10metrelonginflatablecraftdriftingwithoutamotor.At
least21peoplehadperishedduringthecrossingwhichhadbeenhitbyhighwindsandroughseas,includingsomesevenbabieswhosemothers
hadbeenunabletoholdontotheirbundles.Thesurvivors,allsubSaharanAfricans,weregivenpsychologicalassistancewiththeirtrauma,but
suspicionsaboutthetwoCamerooniansemergedwhensomeofthemigrantsappearedafraidtotalkaboutwhathadhappened.Thetwo
Cameroonianswerefoundtobecarrying1,500incash,thesamesumthatwitnessessaidtheyhadfoundontheirvictimsbeforeforcingthem
overboard.Thetrialisexpectedtolastseveraldays.
