/Modification

Write whole numbers on whiteboard for topic.

Opening problem page 28. Students open to problem and solve, can
work with elbow buddy if need help. Discuss questions.
Notes:
Addition and subtraction title.
Sum: add 2 or more numbers. Difference: subtract smaller number from
larger number.
Practice: find sum of 7, 8, and 11=26. Difference 13 and 31=18 pay
attention to order with difference! Use individual white boards, show
work and show answer when done for quick formative assessment.
74 +23+7=74+30=104. Show how you can group number to make it
easier to add.
Exercise 2A.1 #1-4 odd letters.
Adding and subtracting large number.
Write numbers in columns with place values lining up, work right to
left. Eg. 32+427+3274. 519-345=174
Exercise 2A.2 #1-5 odd letters.
Exit slip: something learned, question. Write on sticky note and hand in.

Conclusion
Extra activity: Bowling dice game: draw on individual whiteboard 9 circles lined up
like bowling pins, number 1-9. In partners one will roll dice, other will do math. Take
turns. Can use addition and subtraction. Roll 2 dice one time, if can add/subtract
and get all numbers 1-9, get a strike. If need more numbers can roll again and use
that set of numbers, if succeed it is a spare.

Self-Evaluation / Reflection:
I ended up having them write their feedback after class and hand it in then to get it done. For math club it is for
when they need help, they do not have to come every week, I had the plan but said I would get back to them on it. I
think my explanations are getting clearer. Addition and subtraction are basics they knew how to do, the larger
numbers may need more practice on. I got the text to the 2 students that still need it. I filmed myself and I have
need improvement from the start of the practicum.
Things I did well: wrote titles, emphasized importance of place value in writing down in the proper columns when
adding and subtracting. I spoke clearly. I use movement in class, dont stay in one spot. I use the individual white
boards for quick assessment, but I can also see them as they write in their book. I was specific in what I wanted
them to write down. I ended class on time, had time for the exit slip. I stuck to my plan well with timing.
Things to work on: have a better plan on summative assessment feedback. I should have had them look at the
feedback and write their feedback and get it done right away and hand it back in. I should have told them in
opening problem that they can work together. I need to work on consistency. I took too much time on task since it is
more formative to see where they are at. I could have gone faster there and given more time to work on the
assignment after. I say k and so often. I do not need to ask so many formative questions, or get all their
opinions, which I tried to do by saying there are many ways to solve a problem, they were excited to say how they
solved it though. It is nice to see them understand. I should have been clearer on where to write question and
answer when individual white boards were used, I was not consistent. I ask too many easy questions that they
already know they answer to. I should be more exact on how much time they are given for each task. I should have
been more precise in what we would be covering in chapter 2, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing, a
better closer with the opening introductory to chapter 2. I made a mistake when I was adding 7 + 4 out loud. I
added 5 because there was a mark on the board higher that I counted or something. Not sure, I did have it written
down in my notes correctly. I will need to be more careful while writing it on the board.
