METHOD STATEMENT

1.0 METHOD OF COMMISSIONING

1.1. FIRE PUMP
1. CHECK LIST
1.1.1.Check the installation of the pumps is done as per the approved drawings.
1.1.2.Check the Bolts and all the valves are tightened properly.
1.1.3.Check all supports for piping are done properly.
1.1.4.Check if the Rubber Pad is fixed below the pumps.
1.1.5.Check the suction line is done properly and priming has been done.
1.1.6.Check all the suction valves are opened and ensure there is sufficient water in the
tank.
1.1.7.Check the diesel tank is fixed properly and filled; ensure there is no leak from
the tank.
1.1.8.Check the exhaust pipes are fixed properly.
1.1.9.Check the alignment is done properly.
1.1.10.Check all the wiring & electrical connection and termination is done correctly
inside the panels.
1.1.11.Discharge valves to be set 50% open on initial start up
1.2.Field Acceptance Test Procedures as per NFPA - 20
A-11-2.6 Fire Pump Operation.
1.2.1.Electric Motor-Driven Pump.
1.2.1.1.To start a motor driven pump, the following steps should be taken in the
order given below:
1.2.1.2.See that pump is completely primed.
1.2.1.3.Close isolating switch and then close circuit breaker.
1.2.1.4.Automatic controller will start pump if system demand is not satisfied
(Pressure low, deluge tripped, etc.)
1.2.1.5. For manual operation, activate switch or pushbutton, or manual start
handle. Each pump will be started 6 times manually and 6 times automatically.
NOTE: Circuit breaker tripping mechanism should be so set that it will not operate
when current in circuit is excessively large.

1.3

Diesel Engine driven Pump.

1.3.1

To start a diesel engine driven pump, the operator should be familiar

beforehand with the operation of this type of equipment. The instruction book
issued buy the engine and control manufacturer should be studied to this end.

1.3.2

The storage batteries should always be maintained in good order to ensure

prompt satisfactory operation of this equipment.

1.3.3

Check electrolyte level and specific gravity, inspect cable conditions, corrosion
etc.

1.4 Fire Pump Settings

1.4.1.The fire pump system, when started by pressure drop, should be arranged as
follows:
1.4.2.The jockey pump stop point should equal the pump churn pressure plus the
minimum static supply pressure.
1.4.3.The jockey pump start point should be at least 10 psi less than the jockey pump
stop point. Because the main fire pump start point will be lower than the jockey
pump start point, care should be taken to ensure that these settings are not so low that
a pressure shock (water hammer) is created when the main fire pump finally does
come on.
1.4.4.The fire pump start point should be 5 psi less than the jockey pump start point.
Use 10-psi increments for each additional pump. In the case where a booster pump is
being used, the start point should not be set so low that the pressure of the water
supply feeding the pump will keep the pump from starting, even at substantial flow
rates.
1.4.5.Where minimum run times are provided, the pump will continue to after
attaining these pressures. The final pressures should not exceed the pressure rating of
the system.
1.4.6.Where the operating differential of pressure switches does not permit settings,
the settings should be as close as equipment will permit. The settings should be
established by pressures observed on test gauges. Another alternative that can be
explored when the operating differential of a pressure switch does not permit settings
this close is to use separate, independent switches for start and stop settings, which
will be calculated and verified during the commissioning period.
