INTRODUCTION
The goal of this project is communicate and sensitize about the Supporting wildlife, environmental, and
biodiversity protection through carbon value, social and sustainable development in Peru. Furthermore the
impact of Althelia is making a significant investment to strengthen the Tambopata and Bahuaja-Sonene
national parks, key components of Perus strategy to ensure the conservation of this globally important
biodiversity hotspot. The investment is designed to strengthen avoided deforestation through a
combination of conservation, monitoring and protection against illegal logging inside the parks, and the
development of sustainable livelihood opportunities in the immediate areas outside of the parks, known as
the buffer zone. The topics that we investigated are: Statement of work, business case, stakeholders, time,
scope, cost, risk.

THE TAMBOPATA-BAHUAJA PROJECT IN THE PERUVIAN

AMAZON
1. WHAT IS THE STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)?
Project title: Althelia Ecosphere
Background:
Deforestation is one of the main causes of climate change. It is the second largest anthropogenic
source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, after fossil fuel combustion. Deforestation and forest
degradation contribute to atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions through combustion of forest
biomass and decomposition of remaining plant material and soil carbon. Deforestation continues
to be an urgent environmental issue that endangers peoples livelihoods, threatens species, and
intensifies global warming. Forests make a vital contribution to humanity, but their full potential
will only be realized if we stop deforestation and forest degradation.
Business Need:
Althelia Ecosphere creation result by environmental considerations. The presence of
deforestation, mitigate climate change, and biodiversity problem have a catastrophic results not
only in group of people, which depends of natural resources (land-uses), but also for the society in
general.
Deliverables:
-

Report of Balance sheet and financial statement.

Report of number of benefited families (farmers).
Report of installation of agro-forestry systems.
Report of creation of a small producer cooperative and park guards centers.
Report of monitoring and controlling (activities: training farmers, commercialization of
agricultural products).
Report of stakeholders (farmers, sponsor FMO, FinnFund, the European Investment Bank
and private investors AXA, project members).
Report of regulations (CCB standards (Gold level) and VCS).

Strategic plan:
Investment Strategy, the Funds investment objective is to focus on sustainable land use activities
that generate real assets, including certified agroforestry produce, alongside new environmental
assets, such as carbon. This strategy have specialists in identifying and helping to build multiple
revenue projects that generate positive social and environmental impacts and are economically
resilient and technically robust.

2. IS THERE A BUSINESS CASE THAT SUPPORTS THE PROJECT?

VARIABILITY OF THE PROJECT

POLITICS

Law N 28611(Article III the right to participation in environmental

management)

TECHNIQUE

Althelia has enough equipment and personnel.

ECONOMIC

Althelia has support of several financial companies like

FMO,FINNFUND,etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL

FINANCIAL

Eenvironmentally sustainable (protection of 570,000 hectares of native

forest).

US$ 7 million investment

3. WHO ARE THE STAKEHOLDERS?

STAKEHOLDER ANALYSIS MATRIX

4. WHAT IS ITS SCOPE?

The project will result in the long-term protection of the Tambopata National Reserve and
Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, its wildlife and the people living within and around the
Reserve and Park, with the aim of Keep existing forests standing whilst giving farmers,
communities and stakeholders a way to keep their environment intact.

5. WHAT IS ITS TIME RESTRICTION?

The total investment in the project is 7 years.

6. WHAT IS ITS COST RESTRICTION?

The total investment in the project in Madre de Dios is US$12 million and includes Anthelias
investment of US$7 million secured by verified carbon units resulting from avoided
deforestation.

7. ARE THERE ANY PROJECT RISKS THAT CAN BE IDENTIFIED?

A risk that is presented in the project areas is under constant threat from deforestation and
degradation of forests from slash and burn shifting cultivation and illegal gold mining.
