AbstractMagic cane is the need of day. It helps the blind to

guide through obstacles using a sensor array. It also uses a head
light to ease their navigation in dark and provides them with a
distress switch which allows the send SOS message and their co
ordinates to their dear.

I NTRODUCTION

Today in world an estimate of 37 million people do not

have the ability to see. This is a great problem which requires
undivided attention of the remaining world. There are many
devices to help them in their lives. We are honoured to a
product to that list. Here are some of its features.

A. PHASE I
We will be using Arduino(ATMega8) as our processor. We
will use an array of Ultrasonic sensors to check the obstacles
in front of the user. The sensors will be placed at an angle
of 75 degrees wide and cover up to 215 degrees in which
generally a human turns to. Using the echo received from
the obstacle the processor guides the user through the path.
The number of echoes received and from which the sensor
received them will be determining factor of this working
procedure. So, a minimum gap is to maintained between the
sensors. The communication from the sensors will be through
beeps. The number of beeps will indicate the user to turn
accordingly.[1][2][3][4]

A. Obstacle Detection

B. PHASE II

Our MAGIC CANE has the ability to see the surrounding

on behalf of the user through a sensor array. These sensor will
be line inside the stick covering an overall of 270 degrees in
which a person can move forward. Were a long list of sensors
to choose from. Our priority will be fixed by optimizing the
quality and the cost.

In this phase an external memory will be interfaced so

that the guidance will be through a voice automated from the
memory we have incorporated. We will record and convert the
guiding voice messages into other languages. This is so that
the user may feel ease in understanding the guidance. This can
be materialised using various peripherals . Most commonly
used peripheral for this work is Generic Arduino Compatible
Passive Speaker Buzzer Module - Black KY-012 [5][6]

B. Voice Navigation
In need of additional help , our product can help by using
predefined voice clips to help the user navigate in obstacle
filled path. This can also be improved by using maze follower
algorithm generally used in line followers.
C. GPS Track
The loved ones can always keep track of the user using
a GPS module incorporated into the body of the product and
this can also triggered manually by user in case of emergencies
and can be used to SOS signal and GPS co ordinates to the
predefined people on touch of a button.

W ORKING

The total project has been divided into three phases in which
the product will be developed and in each phase a new feature
will be added to the product. Phase II and III are subject to
change in preference in accordance to the resources available.

C. PHASE III
GPS modules will be installed in the cane so that in
case of any distress or emergency. He could send an SOS
message to the predefined people through communication peripheral interfaced through Arduino as given in the references.

III.

C ONCLUSION

We are presently in discussion phase so as to what more

feature can be added to our product. We will most probably
using ultrasonic sensor for sensor array.
