A nine days
festival called Navratri. Navratri is a very auspicious festival
celebrated by mostly Hindu people. Navratri is celebrated in
honor of nine different forms of goddess of Durga, laxmi and
saraswati. The Goddess is worshiped in those days to get power,

occur in our life.

Durga Puja is the greatest festival in West Bengal. The Durga
Puja is celebrated in the month of Ashwin i.e. October. The

Jharkhand, Odisha and Manipur. Durga Puja is the symbol of
victory of Goddess Durga over evil demon Mahishasura. The
festival is celebrated for 10 days, although there is more eagerness
during the last 4 days.

Significance and Importance:


Durga Puja festival is of great significance and importance. It
signifies the victory of good over the evil. Durga is the goddess of
strength or Shakti. The idols of Goddess Durga are connected at
various pandals. She holds various weapons in her ten hands. She
rides on a lion. Mahisasura demon is attacked by her. She comes
along with Ganesh, the lord of the host, Lakshmi, the Goddess of
Wealth, Saraswati, the goddess of learning, and Kartik, the god of
heavenly forces. On the top is seated Shiva, the lord destroyer. It
also reminds us of the victory of Rama over Ravana, the demon
king. Durga Puja is one of the biggest festivals in Bengal and it is
the most important socio-cultural event in the Bengali society.
Durga Puja has generally appeared into a community festival.
Kolkata takes on a completely different look during the festival,
especially at night. Thousands of people line up at the pandals.
Streets are decorated with different kinds of light shows.
Restaurants are generally full and several temporary food stalls
are opened in the city. Offices, schools and colleges remain closed
during the festival.
