attachingweightstochains.Theinitialmomentofinertiawaslow,makingiteasytostartthe
flywheel.Asitspedup,however,thecentripetalforcepushedtheweightsoutandmadethe
flywheelresistchangeinspeedandstoremuchmoreenergy.Weincludeapictureofthe
designhere.
WeproposeaslightvariationofdaVincisdesign,replacingthechainswithsprings.This
increasestheenergythatcanbestoredinaflywheelassomeoftheenergygoesintostretching
thesprings.Wewilltrytomaximizetheadditionalenergyperunitmassthatcanbeobtained
fromthisdesign.Somesimplifyingassumptionsthatwemakeare:
