1. What type of system constraints to be satisfied for economic operation of power system?
2. Explain input-output, heat-rate and incremental cost characteristics of a power system.
3. Explain the dynamic programming method for solution of unit commitment problem.
4. Derive transmission loss formula in terms of real power generation.
5. Explain, What do you understand by optimal unit commitment?
6. Prove that incremental cost curve cuts the heat rate curve and its minimum value.
7. Find out the relation for optimum generation scheduling of power plant including
transmission losses.
8. Three plants of a total capacity of 5000 MW are scheduled for operating to supply a total
system load of 310 MW. Evaluate the optimum load scheduling if the plants have the
following cost characteristics and the limitation:
C1 = 0.06P12 + 30P1 + 10;

C2 = 0.10P2 + 40P2 + 15;

C3 = 0.075 P32 + 10P3 + 20;

9. The incremental cost in Rs / MW-Hr of two 250 MW units are as:dC1 / dP1 = 0.2P1 + 30
dC2 / dP2 = 0.15P2 + 40
The minimum load of each is 20 MW. Find the economic loading of each of two units for a
total load of (i) 225 MW (ii) 50 MW.
10. For a simple two unit system, the loss coefficients are as:B11 = 0.001 / MW
B12 = -0.005 / MW
B22 = 0.0024 / MW
The incremental production costs in Rs / MW-Hr of two units are as:dC1 / dP1 = 0.08P1 + 16
dC2 / dP2 = 0.08P2 + 12
Find the generation P1 and P2 for = 20. Also compute the transmission loss, received
power and efficiency of the transmission system.

8. A 50 Hz, 20-Pole hydro-electric generator rated at 500 MVA, 20KV has H = 2 MJ /
MVA.
(i) Determine its s and sm
(ii) Write the swing equation for this generator
(iii) Generator is initially working at Pm = Pe = 1.0 p.u. with o = 10 when a 3-phase short
circuit occurs at its terminals which results in its electrical output reducing to 0 for t 0.
Find its power angle; Pm remains constant at 1.0 p.u. during this time.
9. A 50 Hz, 4 pole turbo generator rated 100 MVA, 11 KV has inertia constant of 0.8
MJ/MVA.
(i) Find the stored energy in the rotor at synchronous speed.
(ii) If the mechanical input is suddenly raised to 80 MW for an electrical load of 50 MW,
find the rotor acceleration, neglect mechanical and electrical losses.
(iii) If the acceleration calculated is maintained for 10 cycles, find the change in torque
angle and rotor speed in RPM at the end of period.
10. A 4 pole, 50 Hz, turbo generator is rated at 45 MW, 0.8 PF lagging and has an inertia of
25000 kg-m2, It is connected through a transmission line to another set whose
corresponding data is 2 pole, 60 MW, 50 Hz, 0.75 PF lagging, 3000 kg-m2. Find the inertia
constant of each machine on its own rating and that of single equivalent set connected to an
infinite bus at a base of 100 MVA.

1. Find the equation for critical clearing angle if an auto reclose circuit breaker is used in a
power system having two transmission lines parallel to each-other and a fault occurs at the
mid-point of one of the parallel lines.
2. Describe the factors affecting transient stability.
3. Describe how can transient stability be improved?
4. Derive the equal area criterion for the stability study of a power system.
5. With the help of equal are criteria, explain how the ARCB and turbine fast valving
help to improve the stability.
6. Explain the application of equal area criterion to study transient stability for a sustained
line fault.
7. A 2-Pole, 50 Hz, 60 MVA turbo generator has a moment of inertia of 9 x 103 Kg-m2.
Calculate:(i) Kinetic Energy in MJ at rated speed
(ii) Inertia Constants M and H
(iii) Inertia Constant at 50 MVA base
8. A loss free generator supplied 50 MW to an infinite bus. The study state limit of system
is 100 MW. Determine whether the generator will remain in synchronism if the prime
mover input is increased by 30 MW.
9. A 500 MVA synchronous machine has H1 = 4.6 MJ / MVA and a 1500 MVA machine
has H2 = 3.0 MJ / MVA. These two machines operate in parallel in a power station. What
is the equivalent H constant for these two machines, relative to a 100 MVA base?
10. A generator with constant excitation supplies 30 MW through a step-up transformer
and a high voltage transmission line to an infinite bus-bar. If the steady-state stability limit
of the system is 60 MW, calculate the maximum permissible sudden increase of generator
output (resulting from sudden increase in prime mover input) if the stability to be
maintained. The resistance of generator, transformer and line may be neglected.
