Introduction
Ifclimatechangeisthekeyprocessinthenaturalworldimpactingonsustainabledevelopment,then
globalisationistheparallelprocessinthehumanworld,creatingbothopportunitiesfor,andbarriersto,
sustainabledevelopment.
Globalisationistheongoingprocessthatislinkingpeople,neighbourhoods,cities,regionsandcountriesmuch
morecloselytogetherthantheyhaveeverbeenbefore.Thishasresultedinourlivesbeingintertwinedwith
peopleinallpartsoftheworldviathefoodweeat,theclothingwewear,themusicwelistento,theinformation
wegetandtheideaswehold.
Thisinterconnectednessamongsthumansontheplanetissometimesalsoreferredtoastheglobalvillage
wherethebarriersofnationalandinternationalboundariesbecomelessrelevantandtheworld,figuratively,a
smallerplace.Theprocessisdriveneconomicallybyinternationalfinancialflowsandtrade,technologicallyby
informationtechnologyandmassmediaentertainment,andverysignificantly,alsobyveryhumanmeanssuch
asculturalexchanges,migrationandinternationaltourism.Asonecommentatorremarked,wenowliveina
networkedworld.
Whileglobalisationisnotanewprocess,ithasacceleratedrapidlysinceWorldWarII,andishavingmany
effectsonpeople,theenvironment,cultures,nationalgovernments,economicdevelopmentandhumanwell
beingincountriesaroundtheworld.Manyoftheseimpactsarebeneficial,butJimmyCarter,aformerPresident
oftheUSA,haspointedoutthatmanypeoplearemissingoutonthesebenefits:
Globalisation,asdefinedbyrichpeoplelikeus,isaverynicethingyouaretalkingaboutthe
Internet,youaretalkingaboutcellphones,youaretalkingaboutcomputers.Thisdoesntaffect
twothirdsofthepeopleoftheworld.

Theseissuesmakethedevelopmentofanunderstandingofglobalisation,itsvariousintegratedforms,itsdriving
forcesanditsimpactsavitallyimportanteducationobjective.Suchaunderstandingcanprovideyoungpeople
withcriticalinsightsintothesocial,culturalandpoliticalimpactsoftheglobalisingimpactsofeconomic
integrationandcommunicationtechnologiesaswellasprovidethemwithcapacitiestoassessthecostsand
benefitsintheirlivesancommunitiesandthoseofpeopleinotherpartsoftheworld.Thisprovidesanimportant
ethical,aswellasanalytical,dimensiontothestudyofglobalisation.
