Problem 1 (15)

The following table gives data, in kJ, for a system undergoing a thermodynamic cycle consisting of four
processes in series. For the cycle, kinetic and potential energy effects can be neglected.

(a) Fill in the missing entries, each in kJ.

Process ΔU Q W
1-2 -610
2-3 670 230
3-4 0 920
4-1 -360 0

(b) Does this cycle represent a power cycle or a refrigeration cycle? Explain.

Problem 2 (15)

A gas is confined to a piston-cylinder assembly as shown in Fig 2a. Atmospheric pressure is 14.2 lbf/in .

The mass of the piston is 50 lbm and the local acceleration due to gravity is 31.9 ft/s . The face area of

the piston is 0.25 ft . Determine the absolute pressure of the gas in units of lbf/in . Treating the piston as
a free body, draw and label all forces acting on the piston using Fig 2b.

Problem 3 (35)

A piston-cylinder assembly contains 5 kg of carbon dioxide gas (CO2). The gas is compressed from an
initial state where T1 = 320 K and P1 = 200 kPa to a final state where P2 = 520 kPa. During the
1.4
process the pressure and specific volume are related by Pv = constant. Assume the following:
• Ideal gas
• MCO2=44.01 kg/kmol
• R = 8.314 kJ/kmol-K
• Neglect changes in kinetic and potential energy
• Do not assume constant specific heats for CO2. Use the gas table provided. Indicate on the table
the values used to solve this problem.

(a) Determine the final temperature of the gas, in K.

(b) Determine the work of compression, in kJ

(c) Determine the magnitude, in kJ, and direction of the heat transfer during the compression process.
Is heat added or removed from the gas?
Problem 4 (35)

A closed rigid tank contains 2 lbm of a saturated two-phase liquid-vapor mixture of water. The mixture is
49.248 % vapor by mass with an initial temperature of 190 F. Heat is added to the container until the
2
pressure reaches 40 lbf/in . Assume kinetic and potential energy effects are negligible. Use the properties
of water tables provided. Indicate on the tables the values used to solve this problem.
3
(a) Determine the volume of the container in ft

(b) What is the initial pressure inside the container, in lbf/in ?

(c) What is the final temperature of the water, in F?

(b) Determine the amount of heat added to the container, in Btu.

(e) Sketch this process on the P-v coordinates below. Indicate the states relative to the vapor dome and
show the process (path) connecting the states.
