Professional Presence & Influence

Most nurses enter the field of nursing because they care about people and want to help them.
Caring is just one trait that plays into the care that a nurse will provide to his/her patient
population. Many factors related to the nurse will impact the care the nurse provides. These
factors can range from age, gender, education, religion, culture, personal background or
upbringing. These factors will affect the approach the nurse takes in their decisions on how they
believe care should be provided to their patients. It is human nature to allow our past
experiences in life to affect the way we act or react to situations or decisions. This may become
an issue as a nurse in that we sometimes must put our personal feelings aside and consider the
factors that directly affect our patients. When deciding the appropriate care for patients we must
consider their age, gender, education, religion, culture, socioeconomic status or customs. All of
the things that affect the way we look at things or make decisions in our lives are the same things
we need to consider for our patients when we are providing care to them. As we grow in our
practice and expand our knowledge base we will develop a better understanding of the true
meaning of being human and to learn diversity in our patient relationships. (Mendes, 2015)
A1. There are three significant Models of Health and Healing. First was Era I medicine in the
1860s. This was a time when medicine was attempting to become scientific. The basis of this
pathway was health and illness are totally physical in nature. This would give concentration to
the sequence of medications, treatments and the use of technology for recovery. The brain or
consciousness was not considered to contribute to health or disease in a major way. Era II
medicine in the 1950s began due to the increased awareness of the relationship between a
person's mind and the effects that it had on the physical body. Both Era I and Era II share the
idea that a person's consciousness is "local" and is restricted to the body and current moment or
sole lifetime. Era III is considered to be the newest and most progressive and is unlike the other
two Era's in that the consciousness is nonlocal and unbound to individual bodies. This Era
supports the belief that minds are distributed throughout space and time; that they are limitless,
eternal, and, are ultimately, one. This Era involves therapies creating bridges between persons
by means of distant healing, intercessory prayer, and particular emotions.
Many theories developed from the Era's of health and healing. No matter what Era you guide
your practice from, the factors of you and the influences in your life that define the human being
that you are have a direct affect on the patient care that you provide. The environment in which
you practice is another factor that will also have a great affect on the decisions and choices you
make in the care that you provide in your nursing practice. (Dossey & Keegan, 2013, p. 9)
A2. I have been a nurse for 18 years now and although I did not know a a young girl that I
wanted to be a nurse once I decided as an adult I knew this would be my lifelong career. I chose
nursing because I have always been a caretaker with family, friends and everyone that I feel is in
need. I feel that my professional presence differs from Era I in that I am a very compassionate
and attentive nurse. I always go above and beyond for my patients. I feel there is more to
nursing than just the robotics of passing medications, performing treatments, dressing changes,
charting and procedures. I feel that nursing should not be just task oriented. There should be a
personal and human side to nursing that involves getting to know your patient and making them

feel comfortable about the care you are providing for them. I feel that tasks are important but
adding that personal touch and keeping the human side involved just puts the patient at ease.
A3. I have worked in many different arenas during my nursing career. One that comes to mind
is my time spent working in Oncology and the Hospice setting. This type of nursing definitely
taught me that it is very important for a patient to be able to keep a positive outlook for their
health and well-being. I watched many of my oncology patients and it seemed the ones with the
positive attitudes would have better outcomes with their health. I do feel that the mind is a
powerful part of our healing. That being said, the nurse also needs to have a positive attitude and
presence when providing care to her patient population. Hospice taught me the importance of
holistic medicine. We should always treat the whole patient. We sometimes forget that
emotional, financial and other stressors in people's lives can lead to physical condition or
exacerbate these conditions. We need to address the big picture of the patient and not just focus
on the "diagnosis" that we have been presented with. Take time to sit and talk with your patient
and get to know them. Let them feel that they are the only one at the time you are working with
them. Don't ever make them feel rushed or like they are being a burden to you. The interactions
that you have with your patient whether positive or negative can have a direct affect on their
health and progress of their condition.
B1. Custom Keirsey Temperament Report for: Angela Paschal

Your Keirsey Temperament Sorter Results indicates that your personality

type is that of the

Guardians (SJ's) are the cornerstone of society, for they are the
temperament given to serving and preserving our most important social
institutions. Guardians have natural talent in managing goods and
services--from supervision to maintenance and supply -- and they use all
their skills to keep things running smoothly in their families, communities,
schools, churches, hospitals, and businesses.
Guardians can have a lot of fun with their friends, but they are quite
serious about their duties and responsibilities. Guardians take pride in
being dependable and trustworthy; if there's a job to be done, they can be
counted on to put their shoulder to the wheel. Guardians also believe in
law and order, and sometimes worry that respect for authority, even a
fundamental sense of right and wrong, is being lost. Perhaps this is why
Guardians honor customs and traditions so strongly -- they are familiar
patterns that help bring stability to our modern, fast-paced world.
Practical and down-to-earth, Guardians believe in following the rules and
cooperating with others. They are not very comfortable winging it or
blazing new trails; working steadily within the system is the Guardian way,
for in the long run loyalty, discipline, and teamwork get the job done right.
Guardians are meticulous about schedules and have a sharp eye for proper
procedures. They are cautious about change, even though they know that

change can be healthy for an institution. Better to go slowly, they say, and
look before you leap.
Guardians make up as much as 40 to 45 percent of the population, and a
good thing, because they usually end up doing all the indispensable but
thankless jobs everyone else takes for granted.
On the job, you seem to innately understand how to create smooth,
working processes in your environment. You can excel at directing others
to fulfill their duties. In your ideal workplace, you and your colleagues
would know what is expected of you and be predictably rewarded for
meeting these expectations.
("Keirsey :: Keirsey Temperament Sorter," 2016)

B2a. As seen above my test results for the Keirsey Temperament Sorter was Guardian, know as
the cornerstone of society. I feel that the profile fits me very well. I have always been the
organizer at home, work and otherwise. I keep things running smoothly in my business life as
well as in my family and relationships. I am the one to volunteer, organize and put together the
event, party or anything that may need to happen to bring the group together. I do enjoy time
with friends and family but take my job and life responsibilities very seriously. I have always
been trustworthy and dependable and pride myself in this traits. I want my family, friends and
coworkers to feel they can depend on my to be there for them. I feel that it is very important to
follow rules, guidelines, protocols and laws. I feel these things are there for a reason and we
need to abide by them. Respect for authority is very important to me but I feel you have to give
respect to earn respect. Customs and traditions are also important to me and I stand on my
beliefs and the way I was taught and believe in standing up for what you believe in. I thinks it
takes a strong person to stand their ground and know when to compromise without disregarding
their traditions. Traditions are what holds true in our changing times. I do not believe in flying
by the seat of your pants. I think following the systems that are in place, remaining loyal and
teamwork gets the job done. I feel as a nurse it is important to adhere to schedules, be observant
and follow proper protocol for procedures. Changes occur all the time in the healthcare
industry. Change is good but it is always a good idea to weigh all options before implementing
the change to assure the safety of the protocol being put into place. We as Guardians are a very
organized, dependable, trustworthy, hardworking group that can get the job done. I love being a
nurse and love being a Guardian. I feel as I said in the beginning that this personality fits me
well because I enjoy the satisfaction I feel from taking care of my patients, family and friends
and also the enjoyment of just be a well-rounded and together person most of the time.
B2b. I could foresee barriers or challenges with the personality type of the Artisan. This person
is opposite in that they are risk takers, don't necessarily follow the rules, and always want to be
around the action. They are impulsive and resist being obligated or tied down and don't believe
in saving for a rainy day. They just like to focus on what is going on right now. I see barriers
between these two personalities in that the Guardian believes in respect for law and order and
authority and the Artisan feels rules or no rules whatever it takes. This could create conflict in
accomplishing tasks if the two personalities are involved in the same task. A compromise might
be that the Guardian would be the personality that makes things run smoothly and that trait

would kick in so that the project at hand could be completed in a timely manner. Another
conflict that may arise is that the Guardian is very organized, whereas the Artisan is spontaneous
and is just concerned about the end result. The Guardian would then need to communicate their
desire for the project to remain task oriented and not so much focused on the end result. The
hope of the Guardian would be that the Artisan would then exhibit their trait of adaptablilty and
make a small compromise to the issue at hand.

D1. Optimal healing environments encompass four elements: internal, interpersonal, behavioral,
and external environments. The Johns Hopkins Hospital offers internal features such as marble
and limestone surfaces for a calming and elegant style, rooms that are well-lite with sunlight and
calming public spaces for the patient and their visitors. Sound is taken into consideration with
material in the ceiling tiles in patient care areas, clinical areas, and busy nurses stations that
absorb sound. Another feature for sound is a peacefully quiet call system to avoid overhead
paging. Throughout the hospital there is a display of beautiful artwork that is very pleasing to
the eyes. For the pediatric patients there are animal sculptures in the Bloomberg Children's
Center. Art is also displayed on window shades in private rooms. Outdoors you will find
beautifully landscaped gardens for quiet meditation. ("Healing Environment," 2016)
Another hospital that has incorporated the use of the optimal healing environment is William P.
Clements Jr. University Hospital. The hospital placed patient units away from public areas and
lobbies to reduce noise. Another noise and traffic reduction method they implemented was to put
into place supply elevators for supplies to be brought up to a back supply room away from the
patient rooms and also each patient has a supply closet outside of their room for supplies to be
placed in so that they will not be disturbed when resting or visiting with family. The
workstations are setup outside of patient rooms so that charting is close at hand but not right in
the room to disturb the patient. Rounding rooms or "touchdown areas" were developed for
discussing patients out of traffic areas with colleagues or family members. The building was
built to provide appropriate sunlight at the proper times of day so that patient did not receive
overexposure but just enough to brighten their day. Lastly, outback of the hospital is a beautiful
garden for patients that are allowed to go outside that is out of public traffic and it will
accommodate those in wheelchairs or with special needs. ("Healing Environment: Clements
University Hospital - UT Southwestern, Dallas, Texas," 2016)

D2. I currently work in a military hospital clinic setting. I work in the Allergy Clinic and we
have a patient population ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics. We are limited in our current
setting due to the fact that it is a government installation. I try to add my personal touch to make
the patients feel comfortable. I have added magazine racks in the rooms. I am working on
getting a television for our procedure room as some of our procedures the patient is with us all
day. I currently have a DVD player with movies for the pediatric patients and stickers for them
when we have to perform allergy testing as this is not a pleasant experience for them. I would
like to get a craft cart for the peds patients with activity books as well. Everyday I strive to just
be friendly, pleasant, helpful and provide the best care possible to our patient population and
make them as comfortable as possible during their time in our clinic.
