Introduction to Work Based Activity

History has taught educational establishments that work based learning is
invaluable for the academic within their chosen field. Work Based Activity is a
module specifically placed at level 5 within the curriculum framework in order to
balance the academic rigor and the experience of working as close to industry
aesthetic as possible. By dealing with your industry mentor you are effectively
working under employment conditions to deliver a pre-organised brief.
The booklet contains pertinent information regarding the module you are about to
study. The assessment criterion is clearly detailed and you should take your time to
look at which module learning outcomes are being tested by the assessment in
addition to the assessment guidance provided. The programme outline details for
you the planned week by week delivery structure which you should use to help you
read ahead. Of interest you will also find at the end of the booklet, the comments
that students have previously made regarding the module and the actions that
have been taken as a result.

Rationale

Aims and distinctive features

While the academic arena is a good place

to learn production-based skills, hands-on
experience in a professional environment
is vital, not least in exposing students to
real-world challenges and operational
pressures. This module will give the
students an opportunity to enhance their
practical skills portfolio in a production
company (be it a locally designated
production house or an independently
sourced company).
The aim of this module is to widen the
practical experience of the students,
working in a commercial, professional or
industrial environment. The module will
be taught largely through independent
project work negotiated between the
student, tutor and relevant work-based
mentor. The independent project is a
teaching and learning method and forms
the basis for the assessment process; the
process of undertaking the project, what
was done and what was learned from it
will be what is awarded the summative
mark. Students will receive both ongoing
tutor support and work place mentor
support whilst undertaking the

BA (Hons) Digital Film & TV Production Work Based Activity Module Handbook 2016/17

independent project.

Learning outcomes

Learning and teaching strategy

Upon successful completion of this

module a student must be able to:
1. Evidence well established concepts
and
awareness
of
an
issue
identified as significant within their
own professional context and work
2. Explain and justify the importance
of professional practice within the
work place and the range of roles
and responsibilities
3. Apply critical thinking skills to
identify and explore an issue of key
personal significance and interest
within their professional context
4. Reflect on their performance and
progress within the work place with
direct reference to their own
particular specialism.
5. Identify the students specific area
of employment interest by building
a portfolio of self-promotional
materials
reflecting
workplace
experience.
6. Conduct themselves professionally
and contribute effectively in a
workplace environment
The content and form of all work-based
activity will be negotiated with and
managed by the module tutor, and will
conform to Grimsby Institute of Further
and Higher Education policies and
procedures. Although support and
guidance will be given by industry
professionals, the tutor will fully monitor
students and provide summative
feedback. Appropriate documentation
will be in place to support learners and
will be discrete according to the students
needs and individual placement.
Formal contact with students will include
workshops, tutorials and visits to their
placement.
Workshops and Tutorials
As the majority of students will be
working with industry
professionals/mentors within our own
East Coast Pictures, the expectation will
be that they attend regular formal
production meetings at timetabled
sessions where they can discuss their
progress with the programme leader.
Students who have sourced their own
external placement will also be required
to give regular updates to their tutors,

BA (Hons) Digital Film & TV Production Work Based Activity Module Handbook 2016/17

although this may be subject to flexible

timetabling.
The module will be delivered over one 17
week semester which will comprise of 12
hours of contact delivery over 14 weeks
(and 188 hours dedicated to directed
and/or private study time over the 17
week semester) totalling 200 hours.
There will be one tutorial held during
'reading week' per module providing
students with the opportunity to discuss
individual issues with the module tutor.
Students will be expected to take
responsibility for their own learning and
to read and revise outside of class
contact time. The Library is available for
study with use of computers. Access to
equipment will be available within the
confines of their individual placement
environment, although ECM equipment
will be available as normal.
Considerations must be made to ensure
that student projects adhere to the
Institutes guidelines on ethics.

Remember to pay attention to detail; work at this level should not contain spelling,
grammatical or presentation errors - proof read your work as errors may result in a
loss of marks. Also in using and making reference to other peoples work, you must
ensure you reference correctly. You must not pass off other peoples work as your
own as this will be regarded as Academic Theft; in other words, cheating or

Assessment Brief(s):
Assessment 1: Learning Portfolio (60%)
BA (Hons) Digital Film & TV Production Work Based Activity Module Handbook 2016/17

Students will be required to submit an online learning portfolio presented using

Blogger. Within this online portfolio, students will be expected to demonstrate
evidence of the experience they have undertaken during the module. This should
be evidenced in a variety of ways from primary and secondary research, a
journal/log-book evidencing hours in placement, photographic evidence of your
experience, a reflection on their skill set progression from week one through to the
completion of the module. What has the experience of working under employment
conditions done for you?
This portfolio must evidence your professional development over the course of the
semester.
Use the following page headers as guidance to structure your blog:About Me

Submission Dates:
Learning Portfolio (60%) FULL website address via Turnitin (hotlinks are not an
acceptable option).
Final (summative) submission date: 09/12/16
(this date is the final date of submission for your completed assessment; the mark
awarded for this will be presented to the exam board)
Assessment 2: Report (2000 words, 40%)
The student will produce a formal report. In this report, the student will be
expected to demonstrate evidence of analysis of their initial skill set and how they
progressed throughout the module. The report should focus on the relevance of
Work Based Activity within an academic framework, making reference to published
material on work based learning. It is important that the report is not treated as
diary of your experiences. You should reflect on your own work based learning
experiences on the module, and discuss aspects of your own development through
a period of work based activity.
You must apply primary and secondary research to the report. Consider
interviewing your employer, or other people involved in work based learning.
The report should be 2,000 words in length. Any annotation of interviews
undertaken for this assignment is NOT included in this tariff and should be added
as an appendix.

Presentation of Assessments
Written assessments (case studies, essays, reports etc) should be produced in
Font Arial size 12 with 1.5 or double line spacing. Your student number should be
placed in the header, page numbers in the footer and the total word count
excluding the reference list and bibliography clearly indicated at the end.
Quotations do form part of your word count.
You should attach to the front of the assignment, a covering page identifying your
student number (not your name), programme of study, module title, assignment
title and module tutor.
You are required to submit assessments online using Turnitin.
Some
assessments may require a physical submission; where this is the case your
assessment must be submitted to the Module Leader within the class, along with
a cover sheet submitted via Turnitin. If this is the case, it will be detailed in the
assessment brief. The assignment submission sheet must also be included at the
beginning of each assessment submitted.
Any work submitted after the deadline will be recorded with the date it is submitted
and also recorded as 'late'.
You can expect to receive feedback 4 working weeks from the date of submission
(see 10.2 of the Code of Practice Assessment of Students). This will normally be in
written format but will not be ratified until the exam board this means your marks
are subject to change until that point.
Work submitted electronically will be returned electronically. Hard copy
assessments will be kept for return to students for 6 months after the exam board.
After this time work will be securely destroyed. Please do not submit original
certificates or documents with your assessments. The Institute will not be held
responsible for the loss or damage of these items should they be submitted.

Feedback and Module Enhancement

Student Feedback
At the end of every module students are required to complete an anonymous
questionnaire online using SurveyMonkey. Analysis of those questionnaires is
detailed below. The information allows you to see what previous students have
said and to gain insight into how the module has been enhanced as a result.
Individual reflections are also included by the module tutor(s).
Outlined below are the comments made at the end of the module delivered
within the academic year of 15/16.
Module: Work Based Activity
Level: 5
MEQ Summary:
Work Based Activity 9/14 completed
Overall, the majority of the feedback is good, with the students commenting that
they felt the module was well planned, the teaching was well organised, and the
assessments were relevant to the module. This is one of the more practical
modules, and so has received good feedback with the students all commenting
that they enjoyed the chance to work with industry, and they all enjoyed the
overall experience. There were a couple of complaints that they would have
liked to have been placed elsewhere however, as is explained at the
beginning of this module the students are able to go to any production
company they like, the module tutor has some contacts, but if they chose to find
their own, then they are free to do so. One student has commented that they
would have like more time on the placement. This has been reviewed this year,
and the students this year are receiving two weeks of extra placement time at
their choice of work. There was one complaint from a student that the
workplace they were put into was disorganised. This has been looked at, and
certain guides have been put into practice by the possible workplaces.
