Report of Research

A. Background
The first step in learning a language is to learn the speech sound,
stressed word, or which word unstressed, word connection, like vowel meet
vowel, vowel and consonant, etc. The last we have to understand use of
American T when one of certain letter of alphabet meets each other. It is
impossible to speak a language without knowing how the sound of language
is produced.
Indicators above as one of the linguistics factors are very important in
any linguistic event. One who wants to get his massages across orally would
not be able to achieve his desire unless he has a good knowledge about
English, like pronunciation, etc. The massages will not come across properly
if the sounds are not understood. That is why if someone mispronounces
some words of phrases. He will misinterpret any sound. So that the
communication cannot take place.
Based on our research, from explanation above, the researcher has
doing some test at students of English and Literature Department Letter and
Humanities Faculty Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, there are
six students, such as two students the first semester, two students of the
third semester and two students of fifth semester.
In arranging this research, the researcher focused the analysis on
pronunciation includes such terms as sound, stress and rhythm, intonation
(Harmer, 1991: 11). These explanations of the three sections below:
1. Sounds.
In human language, it deals only with sound can be meaningless, so
that different sounds are put together and bear a meaning about
something. It is important for us to know and understand how each word
produced. The researcher discover many sounds but irrelevant how should
be a word produced, like Gap and Gape, Holly and Holy, Beach
and Bitch, etc. It is indicate that they not got some subject or parts of
linguistics. Although, fifth semester has got all parts of categories.
2. Stress and rhythm.

Stress is indicated in writing and speaking, probably the simplest way

to do so is to write which carries the central stressed syllable. The
sentence: The piracy is not part of our country! for example, would be
divided in to four main stress, there are The piracy, not, part and
word country. In this research, the researcher has found a lot of errors at
the first, three and even fifth semester students of English and Literature
Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar in speaking.
3. Intonation.
Intonation rises and falls in tone that make the Tune of an utterance
is an important aspect of the pronunciation of English, often making a
difference to meaning or implication. The word Nut and Not almost has
similarity sounds when researcher doing test at students, Neat and
Note, Hate and Heat etc. there are many mispronunciation when
they speaking.
B. Conclusion
After analyzing the data that found in use of speech sound, stressed
word, word connection and American T, it can be understood that the
students produced many errors. From the types of errors that are produced
by students, it can be seen when researcher did researched and has gave
evaluation. The evaluation below:

Based on the result of this research, the researcher thinks that as the
learners we have to study about grammar because it can build the beautiful
and interesting sentence.
Furthermore, the researcher suggests for the students of English and
Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar who are preparing to speak
or write, may be thesis. They are expected to be aware of their weaknesses
in mastering grammar, stressed, word connection, American T, etc. They
should improve their own performance in those categories by reading more
additional books and doing some practices, especially speaking through
variety of exercises.
