Tim Anderson, a stone balance artist, carefully balances a stone as he works along Meadow Run at
Ohiopyle State Park.

im Andersons love for the outdoors is breathtakingly captured

in the art he creates.
Tim is a stone balancing artist and photographer who, on any given
day, can be found in and along the
streams, creeks and rivers of southwestern Pennsylvania, gathering stones
that he uses to defy the properties of
physics in his work.
I walk around and look for anything
that appeals to me, said Tim, who was
searching for stones in the Yough River
in Ohiopyle State Park on a recent sunny summer day.
Much like any young child who
walks along a beach looking for sea
shells and picks up the ones they like
the most, I do the same. I pick the ones
I most enjoy and think will balance.
What happens next is mesmerizing.
After he cleans the stones, Tim patiently and painstakingly begins to construct a vertical puzzle, making gravity
work in his favor as he balances stone
on stone.
Standing on rocks in the river, near
a natural water slide filled with gleeful
children, Tims concentration is intense
and his hands, though tremoring, are
still remarkably precise as he finds the
points of balance or cantilevers for the
stones hes selected this day.
Almost everything balances somewhere and its just how well they work
together and the shape its going to create when its done. And I found those
