QUESTION 1
A drag racing car moves horizontally from rest on a racing track with an acceleration
as shown in Figure 1. After 30s of acceleration the car was further boosted with a
NOS (Nitrous Oxide System) fitted in the car engine which ignited for a duration of
10s. Finally the drag car decelerates at a constant rate to a lower speed at 80s. Plot
the v t and s t graphs which describe the motion for 0 t 80 s.

QUESTION 2
The crate has a mass of 100 kg and is being towed by a steel cable which is always
directed at 30 from the horizontal as shown in Figure 2 below. If the magnitude of P
is increased until the crate begins to slide, determine the crates initial acceleration if
the coefficient of static friction is s = 0.5 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is
k = 0.3.

QUESTION 3
The car is moving with a speed vo= 110 km/h up and the driver applies the brakes at
point A, causing all the wheel to skid. The coefficient of kinetic friction for the rain
slicked road is k = 0.6 as shown in Figure 3.
a) Sketch the free body diagram of the car.
[5 Marks]
b) Determine the stopping distance SAB

c) Repeat your calculation for the case car is moving downhill from
B to A.

QUESTION 4
a) A 75 g projectile travelling at 600 m/s strikes and becomes embedded in the
50kg block, which is initially stationary as shown in Figure 4a. Compute the
energy lost during the impact. Express your answer as a percentage of the
original system energy.

b) The 10 kg block is resting on the horizontal surface when the force T is applied
to it for 7 seconds. The variation of T with time is shown. Calculate the
maximum velocity reached by the block and the total time t during which the
block is in motion. The coefficients of statics and kinetic friction are both 0.50.
