FATMATA
MATERNITY
CENTER
DREAMS FOR
KACHRA
KUNDI
LOCATION: BLAMA PERRI
PUJEHUN DISTRICT

ONE IN EIGHT

WOMEN RISK DYING DURING

PREGNANCY OR CHILDBIRTH

KEY FACTS
Pujehun is one of the countrys
poorest and least developed
districts.
Inhabited by widows and
children as a result of the
decade war.
The average family size is
6.2 persons
Six communities surrounding
our maternity clinic: Blama Perri,
Golahun, Juhun, Perri-Bo,
Matagbema and Vaama.

The majority of the population

(87%) is living in rural areas.
19% children are less
than 5 years of age
28% of children are
between 5 -14 years of age
49% are in the15-64 years of
age (which is the active
workforce)
Nearest hospital, more than
fifteen miles away, is reachable
only by bike or walking due to
terrible inroads.

A proper birthing center for Blama Perri was an absolute need.

Sierra Leone has for years led in maternal and child mortality
rates. Women would deliver babies at home without proper
medical care or would not be able to reach a hospital in time for
emergencies. This common occurrence had become a silent
epidemic. Women were risking their lives to give birth.

BRINGING HOPE
TO BLAMA PERRI
TO BRING CHANGE TO THIS RURAL COMMUNITY

THAAKAT COMPLETED A STATE OF THE ART

MATERNITY CENTER IN APRIL OF 2014

Since then we have treated more than
6500 patients and more than 150
healthy babies have been delivered!
We provide general healthcare, vaccinations,
family planning services and support to the
community of Blama Perri and nearby villages.
The community refers to our center as a small
America as it is the only facility for hundreds
of miles with light around the clock.

SIERRA LEONE HAS ONE OF THE

HIGHEST MATERNAL MORTALITY RATES

IN THE WORLD

Our solar panel roofs serve as a charging hub, a

night time shelter for students who need to
study and a safe gathering place for friends and
neighbors to socialize into the night.
