INTRODUCTION

Electricity
Electricity is a great gift to humankind of Modern Science. It has removed
darkness from the world and has blessed every sphere of human activity. Todays
life without electricity is almost impossible. Modern life has become so
mechanical that even for such small things in daily life we need electricity. The
television, radio, grinder, and heater all that we are using at home or work are
running only by electrical power. In these days, nothing a man can do is possible
without the use of electricity. A man in the present ages uses electricity in every
way possible. This research topic is about electricity conditions in Bhaderwah and
the problems face by the peoples of Bhaderwah.

Bhaderwah Town (pic courtesy www.bhaderwah.com)

Bhaderwah is a town in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir state. Bhaderwah
valley is predominantly a mountainous town situated 80 km from Batote.
Bhaderwah is located on the foothills of middle Himalayas. The town is endowed
with breath-taking natural beauty which is why it is popularly called mini
6

Kashmir. Apart from having picture perfect scenic beauty due to beautiful forests,
there are many small streams flowing through various parts of the town. The
Halyan River flows through the main market of town.
The purpose of this Research is to find out the problems faced by the peoples by
Bhaderwah regarding the electricity. This Research will focus on the problems
faced by the local public and the department will be questioned whether they are
supplying the exact amount that is demanded by people or not. If not what are the
problems the department is facing. The department will be asked why there are so
many cuts in the Town and why there is short in the power supplied. The nature of
the topic is to find out the problems and give a suggestion to solve it. The nature of
the topic dictates the use of both pilot survey and the secondary survey. The data
will get collected by asking the department and the public. On the basis of the data
the Research will get finalized. Questionnaire will be given to both of them to find
out the four main purposes of the topic:
1.
2.
3.
4.

To study the electricity related problems faced by the people of Bhaderwah.

To study the infrastructure of the Electricity Department.
To study the functioning of the Electricity Department.
Suggestions from various people about improving the services.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Review of Literature
8

The literature review is a text of scholarly paper, which includes the current
knowledge including substantive findings, as well as theoretical and
methodological contributions to a particular topic. Literature reviews are
secondary sources, and do not report new or original experimental work.
Susan Aldridge, Jennifer Rowley Problems in supplying electricity
Evaluate a methodology which was developed to measure public satisfaction
with significant components of the service experience delivered to people at
the City. Uses a questionnaire based survey to collect information on public
satisfaction. The methodology has two unique features: the Public Charter
informed the survey design; and the responses of the public were collected
with the help of a survey and by the data collected with the help of
questionnaires. Outcomes suggest that there remains some resistance to the
completion of questionnaire and both paper and pilot survey versions are
likely to continue to be necessary in order to achieve optimum response
rates. The methodology has identified specific aspects of the service
experience where there was either an absence of public satisfaction or the
level of public satisfaction was variable. These aspects have been further
explored with focus groups and fed into the quality plan for the City. A
negative quality model is proposed which may offer a framework for
response to different types of feedback from public.
Richard Brown, Gordon H.G. McDougall, Terrence Levesque Analysis
of Electronic Distribution Overhead to Underground Conversion.
The conversion of overhead electric power distribution facilities to
underground has been a topic of discussion in Florida for more than twenty
years. The topic studied, discussed and debated many times in the state,
9

municipal, and local levels. Overhead construction is the standard in Florida,

but all investor-owned utilities are required to have a process where
customers can opt to underground existing overhead service by paying the
incremental cost. For municipals and cooperatives, the decision to
underground is left to local citizen boards.
This report presents the results of a review of relevant previous
undergrounding studies done in Florida as well as literature on the subject
from throughout the US and around the world. This review finds out that the
conversion of overhead electric distribution systems to underground is
costly, and these costs are far in excess of the quantifiable benefits presented
in existing studies, except in rare cases where the facilities provide
particularly high reliability gains or otherwise have a higher than average
impact on community goals.
This study uses both primary and secondary surveys.
Sarah Darby, William Felsh The Electricity Demand Research
Project.

This literature review provides a context for understanding the Electricity

Demand Research Project (EDRP) trials, by looking at the results of
comparable experiments and trials around the world. It covers a broad range
of trials, but emphasizes those that have been carried out in the most real
life conditions. Qualitative findings are combined with the quantitative
results, in order to shed some light on the reasons behind different outcomes.
The review is set out intervention by intervention, with comments on
synergies. It also outlines four theoretical approaches to electricity demand
10

and consumption feedback, all of which have their uses when trying to
understand how people react to feedback.

The diverse trials and experiments summarized here, with their wideranging
results, illustrate that there are few single fixes to bring down demand.
They also point to the lack of a standardized approach to researching these
impacts (see EPRI 2009 for a systematic attempt to describe and rectify the
situation). However, there are useful general lessons to be learned. The most
significant single message is that improved feedback is necessary for good
understanding of energy use and effective action to reduce it, but not always
sufficient.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Definition
Research comprises defining and redefining problems, formulating,
hypothesis or suggesting; collecting, organizing and evaluating data; making
deduction and reaching conclusions; at last carefully testing the conclusions
to determine whether they fit formulating hypothesis.
Research Methodology
The process used to collect information and data for the purpose of making
business decisions. The methodology may include publication research,
interviews, surveys and other research techniques, and could include both
present and historical information.

Chapter 5
CONCLUSIONS & SUGGESTIONS

Conclusion:

From the following research and the conducted interviews with the general
public of Bhaderwah it is confirm that most of the people of Bhaderwah are
satisfied with the electricity supplied, and also they agreed that there are too much
electricity cuts. Many peoples are saying that they are now aware if theres any
scheduled time for electricity. Proper voltage of electricity is supplied in the town
except during the times of snowfall and rainfall. There is fair charge for the
electricity used. According to the public of Bhaderwah, there is fluctuation in
36

electricity only at the times during winter, snowfall and rainfall. Most of the people
are satisfied with the quality of services provided by the department.

Maximum households of the area arranged heavy stabilizers to boost up the

power but the poor man becomes the much sufferer who pays electricity bills for
normal satisfactory voltage of around 180 volts but gets electric supply lesser than
even 90 volts and he is unable to arrange stabilizer to cater his need. As for a
normal household only 90 volts is supplied but a normal households need 180
volts.

Residents of Bhaderwah said that unscheduled power cuts have thrown life
out of gear. Residents complain that though they pay power tariff as per the
curtailment schedule but power is not supplied in accordance with it. Electricity
plays hide and seek and is often disrupted for days. Unscheduled power cuts have
become a routine. Students are the worst sufferers as erratic power supply has
affected their studies. The local public then says that they are forced to study in
candlelight. Especially students from far off places are unable to perform well in
studies because of erratic power supply. The people of Bhaderwah said that if a
transformer damages it doesnt get repaired in weeks.

Many people said that the electricity department should take theirs meter
back and start supplying the electricity like the old times.

But the management has total different answers according to the survey the
management answer for some questions they said that they have 138 employees
working and the electricity is supplied from both local plant and other supply
37

stations. They said that they supply 90 volts per household but a normal household
demands for 180 volts. Management then pointed that they have 13 transformers
and 3 more as spare transformers but the public says if a transformer damages the
management takes about a week to repair it. Management then pointed out that
they have 17 employees in local plant, and they said they face problems in
supplying electricity like the wires are not in good condition and the people are
using heaters which cause damage to wires. The electricity department of
Bhaderwah currently has no further plans for underground wiring system. About
the fair payments the department is comfortable as the public are paying fares in
time. People are also using electricity in unfair means which also cause damage to
electrical equipment.

The department suggested that people must stop using heaters as it will help
in maintenance of wires. As in case of heaters it causes damage to wiring.

Suggestion:

The department needs more efficient workers.

Need of more transformers.
The wires must be installed underground.
o To save any damage during snowfall and rainfall.
Need more employees in local electricity plant.

38

After the whole research and surveys it is clear that the department isn`t
supplying enough electricity as a normal household demands. The department must
supply more electricity. As in case of more supplying the department need to
produce more as the more electricity is produced the more gets supplied.
A normal household gets 90 volts of electricity supplied when they need
180 volts its the half electricity supplied then the demand

The department must implement plans to the employees for the proper
maintenance of the department. Every resident of Bhaderwah town complains
about the hide and seek that electricity plays during winters, Electricity plays hide
and seek and is often disrupted for days. Unscheduled power cuts have become a
routine. The department says during winters due to rain and snow the poles and
wires break down as in case it gets hard to supply electricity. To improve this
department must start planning for underground wiring.
The department need more transformers as 1 of it damages it takes about a
week to repair it and also more efficient workers would do the trick. The
department needs more employees in the local electricity plant to produce more
electricity and supply more of it.

The public must also take a step and stop using heater to save the wires from
any kind of damage.
