8.6.5 Single Wall Single Image (SWSI) technique shall be used for plate welds and structural I-Beams.

8.7

RADIOGRAPHIC QUALITY
8.7.1 Minimum SFD/ FFD and Geometric consideration:
Object to Film Distance

UNCONTROLLED
COPY
PRINTED
The distance between the film and the
adjacent weldWHEN
surface shall be kept
to a minimum.
The nominal OFD (Object to Film Distance) is normally the object thickness or weld thickness.
However, consideration shall be given to any unavoidable gap between the weld surface and film
cassette and so the actual OFD shall be defined as the sum of nominal object ti film distance plus
any unavoidable gap.
For the double wall, double image methods, the nominal OFD shall be considered as the outside
diameter of the pipe.
Source to Film Distance
The minimum source to film distance (SFDmin) is dictated by the maximum allowable geometric
unsharpness value (Ug) and the object to film distance (OFD).
SFDmin = SOD + OFD
Where

SFDmin
SOD
OFD

is the minimum source (or focal) to film distance

is the source (or focal) to object distance
is object to film distance as described above

Image Unsharpness (Ug)

Image (Geometric) Unsharpness shall be calculated using the following formula:
Ug = F x OFD / SOD
Where:
Ug
F
OFD
SOD
NDT-OPR-003 Issue 2 Rev 0

= geometric unsharpness
= source or focal spot size
= object to film distance
= source to object distance (SOD < OFD).

NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

GENERAL PROCEDURE RADIOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION

The Geometric Unsharpness shall not exceed the following:

Material Thickness (mm)
Ug maximum
Under 50.8
0.5 mm
50.8 through 76.2
0.76 mm
Over 76.2 through 101.6
1.0 mm
Greater than 101.6
1.8 mm
Note: The Material thickness is the thickness on which
8.7.2 Radiographic Sensitivity
Radiographic sensitivity shall be determined by placing an Image Quality Indicator (IQI) on the
specimen in such a position as to cast an image on the film.
IQI shall be wire type conforming to DIN 54 109, or ISO type penetrameters described in ISO 1027,
or ASTM type penetrameters described in ASTM SE-747/90 shall be used. Tables 1, 2 & 3 show
the standard identification numbers found on the penetrameter packs and the wire sizes found in
the DIN type, ISO type and ASTM type typical packs.
Radiographic sensitivity shall be calculated as follows:
a)

For single image techniques

Sensitivity =
b)

Dia. of thinnest visible wire x 100

Weld thickness

For double image elliptical techniques

Dia. of thinnest visible wire x 100
Wall thickness + Weld thickness

UNCONTROLLED COPY WHEN PRINTED

Sensitivity =
c)

For double image super imposed techniques

Sensitivity =

Dia. of thinnest visible wire x 100

2 x Weld thickness

2% sensitivity is normally required or specified by the client. The sensitivity shall be in accordance
with clients requirements (or better) and mentioned in specific NDT Technique Sheet.
In certain circumstance, component geometry and exposure parameters make it impossible to
attain required sensitivity. In such cases a revised sensitivity, acceptable to the client shall be
determined from production tests under the most favourable reasonably achievable.
Wire penetrameter(s) shall be placed on the weld so that the length of wires is perpendicular to the
length of weld a. The thinnest wire shall face the edge of film.
IQI placed on the film side of specimen shall be identified with letter F.
A comparator test shall be carried out on a representative weld specimen with IQI placed on both
source side & film side. The source side IQI shall be used to determine that the attained sensitivity
meets the requirement. Then corresponding sensitivity value for the film side IQI shall be
calculated. This value shall be considered as the required sensitivity for subsequent production
radiography with film side IQI.
8.7.3 Radiographic Density
Density shall be measured on the sound weld metal area using a calibrated densitometer.
The density value shall not be less than 2.0 or more than 4.0.
Base fog density in unexposed film shall not exceed 0.3. Each new batch of film shall be checked
to ensure that the fog value is below the specified limit.

8.7.4 Densitometers
Densitometers shall be calibrated every 12 months in accordance with manufacturer instruction. An
accuracy of +/- 0.05D is required over the working range. The actual readings shall form part of the
calibration certification.
Densitometers shall also be checked daily, when in use, using a calibrated density strip. The Daily
Verification Densitometer form shown in NDT-FRM-012
The density strip used in densitometer calibration / checks shall itself be calibrated and traceable
back to National Standards. The strip shall have a maximum working life of 3 years and be marked
with the expiry date accordingly.
8.7.5 Control of Scatter
A lead letter B with minimum dimensions of 13 mm in height and 1.5 mm in thickness shall be
placed on the back of the film cassette during exposure to determine the presence of Back Scatter
radiation. If the image of letter B appeared on the film, additional backing strip of 1.6mm thick
shall be placed behind the film cassette during exposures.
Directional collimators shall be used for all non-panoramic techniques to restrict the radiation beam
to the area under examination and thus reduce the effect of scatter.

PERMITTED VARIATIONS FROM SPECIFIC APPROVED TECHNIQUES

GENERAL

Approved Techniques shall not be altered in any way, other than that which does not affect the quality of the
resultant radiograph(s).
To account for process variables the following minor adjustments may be made without re-submission of the
amended technique.
a) Density variations of +/- 0.15 Density units from the approved sample are permitted, providing the density of the
new radiograph still falls within the required range.
b) Kilo Voltage shall not be increased but may be reduced to account for process variables.
c) Exposure may be varied to compensate for process variables and to allow for greater consistency in obtaining
the required density range. The density and sensitivity requirements of this operating procedure shall be
maintained.
d) Film changes may be made, where necessary, providing the resultant radiograph is not worse in terms of quality
than the approved sample. The required density and sensitivity remains unaltered.
e) SFD/FFD shall not be decreased from that specified in the technique.
f) The SFD/FFD may be increased to improve sharpness / definition and the exposure time adjusted using the
inverse square law.
g) Changes above and beyond those permitted, as listed above, shall require the technique to be amended, upissued and re-submitted for approval.

Alignment of Radiation Beam

The source of radiation shall be positioned so that the center of the projected beam passes through the
centre of the section being examined. The beam shall be offset from the plane through the weld by the
minimum distance necessary to prevent the image of the front side weld falling on the image of the other
side. The film shall be placed diametrically opposite to the source of radiation, in close contact with the weld.
Number of exposures:
Unless otherwise required by contract specifications the following shall apply:

Minimum of four exposures shall be made to radiograph schedule-160 or xx strong material using
Gamma Rays.

Minimum of three exposures shall be made for other Gamma Radiography.

Minimum of four exposures shall be made for X-Ray Radiography.
