Project Background:
The ticket issuing process of railway is currently done manually. This process involves a
significant amount of human resources. It is highly time consuming and has resulted in long
queues. Also a passenger cant purchase a ticket from a particular station to any other railway
station in Sri Lanka. Therefore by combining the existing manual system with an automated
system can provide an effective solution. The system we are developing can be installed at any
place in Sri Lanka for Railway Ticket issuing.

Brief description of project idea:

Main objective of this project is to enhance the speed and the availability of the Railway
ticket issuing process and thereby to provide a better service for the passengers.
A Passenger needs to register for the pre paid service via a Web Portal using a Prepaid
card (Similar to SLT Prepaid Cards) which can be purchased from an authorized shop. After a

successful creation of the account a specific code will be generated for each user and will be sent
to him by a MMS.
In the Railway stations users will be authenticated using the code provided to them, by a
smart device. Then the purchase of the ticket would be done in a similar way as in Bank ATM.
Once the transaction is completed an amount equal to the price of the ticket will be deducted
from the users account and a ticket will be issued.

What is new in this project:

Today in Sri Lanka many people use high tech phones but they do not make use of the
rich functionality provided by these devices. In this project we are planning to use the mobile
phone to authenticate the user. This concept is still not implemented in Sri Lanka. Also the
concept of using a pre paid service to pay for transportation is completely new to our country.
This project can be extended to any transportation service inside the country.
