Hundreds attend celebration of Chinese Culture

GEORGE TOWN: Hundreds of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students, their family members and the
public held a Chinese New Year celebration recently.

The function, held for the fifth time, was to promote Chinese culture and tradition.
We hold this event yearly because it is of utmost importance for us to preserve our culture. We
believe it will help the younger generation to embrace their own culture, said the celebrations project
director Ng Ze Shen.

Minister in the Prime Ministers Department, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, was the guest-of-honour.
Also present was USM deputy vice-chancellor of student affairs and development Datuk Dr Omar
Osman.

There were performances by USM drum group, USM Chinese Orchestra and singer Wong Choon
Yean. The function also included a lion dance, beat box, twirling diabolo, face changing, model show and
fire-eating.Food, games and other stalls were also set up to entertain the crowd.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay Torchlight Procession


The Torchlight Procession opens Edinburgh's Hogmanay festivities. It takes place on 30th December,
starting at Parliament Square by St Giles Cathedral at 6.30pm and winding its way down the Mound to
Calton Hill.
Grab a torchlight and your blonde wig, and join a bunch of noisy, hairy vikings and Scotsmen as they
drag a viking warship up Edinburgh's Calton Hill.On arriving at the hill firework displays and the blazing
flames from the ship will light up the night sky when the ship itself is put to the torch.
Hogmanay warmer-upper
A troupe of 30 vikings from the Lerwick Up Helly Aa Viking Festival in Shetland will lead hundreds of
torch carriers.They're accompanied by the pipes and drums of both traditional and contemporary outfits,
which have included Barnton & Dalkeith Pipe Band, the Coalburn Pipes and Drums, the Tartan Dholies,
and Schnickelfritz.
How to get your torches

Torch vouchers cost 5.00 in advance or 6.00 on the night and are available from the
Hogmanay Box Office and Edinburgh Hogmanay ticket outlets. On the day you exchange
vouchers for the torches from 4.30pm in Parliament Square by St Giles Cathedral. You can also
buy torches on the day from 4.30pm in Parliament Square, at the Lawnmarket , the Tron
Information Centre and at Mound Place junction. Money raised by the sale of torches to all those
taking part in the procession will go to Edinburgh's One City Trust and Radio Forths Help a Child
Appeal.
