The Lenape Regional High
School District is known for its
students accomplishing great
things academically and athletically. However, not many people
know of the great things the students are doing to give back to
their community.
Principals Tony Cattani of
Lenape High School and Matthew
Campbell of Shawnee High
School gave the LRHSD Board of
Education a presentation on all of
the amazing things students have
done with community service activities. Cattani said more than
$60,000 was donated last year by
students, staff and the community in a variety of ways.
There is a lot going on in our
schools that isnt shared in publications, and tonight wed like to

Shamong Township Schools recently received results of the

Partnership for Assessment of
Readiness for College and Careers test, and they were presented at the Board of Education
meeting last week. The scores
saw mostly improvements or
scores that stayed the same, however, there were some areas in
need of improvement.
Were doing a lot with data,
not only with PARCC were trying to look at a lot of different
data to find out how we can best
help these kids, how can we make
our curriculum better and what
can we see with this data, Curriculum Coordinator Laura Hoffman said.
The PARCC assessment uses
five performance levels that delineate the knowledge, skills and
practices students are able to
demonstrate in math and English
language arts. The levels are 1:
did not meet expectations, 2: partially met expectations, 3: approaching expectations, 4: met expectations, and 5: exceeded expectations. District scores were broken down by grade level and num-

ber of students who received advanced, proficient or not passing

scores. Levels 1 through 3 are not
passing, level 4 is proficient and
level 5 is advanced.
The schools, rather than comparing grade to grade, looked at a
group of students from one year
to the next to see if there was improvement. Rather than comparing the current fourth grade to
last years fourth grade, the
schools are looking at the scores
from the current fourth grade
compared to itself from third
grade the year before.
We want to see how that group
did the next year. Are they showing growth? Hoffman said.
For math, significant improvements were seen in the current
third grade, sixth grade and
eighth grade and algebra students. Little or no improvement
was seen in the current fourthand seventh-grade students. Regression was seen in the current
fifth-grade students.
For English Language Arts,
significant improvements were

Shamong Schools move

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Shamong Township Schools is
looking into having a $5 million
bond referendum in March because most of the districts facilities are in need of being upgraded or renovated, officials said.
If passed as presented at the
Board of Educations meeting
last week, the average Shamong
homeowner, with a home valued
at $308,080, would pay an additional $142.91 per year in K-8
school taxes.
However, school officials emphasized that a large amount of
unpaid debt from the district will

&

be paid off in 2019, which would

reduce overall K-8 school taxes for
residents starting that year.
These numbers are all tentative, Business Administrator
Laura Archer said.
We are spending about
$200,000 to maintain the facilities
that we have, and they are starting to fall short, Archer said.
Archer said now is the best
time to go out for bond, as the
state will pay up to 40 percent of
allowable costs associated with
improvements for buildings and
grounds; interest rates are historically low, and there are indications that interest rates may increase moving forward; a large

The school has identified an estimated $5 million worth of work
that is needed. That work includes classroom, gym and cafetorium air-conditioning for Indian

mass notification system upgrades for both schools; generator
installation and related standby
power work for both schools;

I think we are moving forward quite nicely, Hoffman said.
The (regressions) are not reflective on the teachers, but something we need to look into is
there a missing curriculum, more
time, more materials? What do we
need to do?
Shamong student math scores
are at a 53 percent passing score
compared to the statewide average of 25 percent. For algebra,
percentages were not available,
however Shamong students are at
792 compared to the state at 741

ELA, Shamong students scores
are at 78 percent passing, with the
state at 55 percent and across
PARCC states 44 percent.

flows evenly throughout, Hoffman said.

Indian Mills Memorial School
Principal Tim Carroll reminded
parents that as of the current
eighth-grade class, the class 2021,
for graduation requirements,
they will have to sit for the
PARCC and pass the PARCC.
Up until last year, there was
about 19 ways for students to
meet their graduation requirement. Those ways are now gone,
starting with our current eighth
graders. If they dont pass the
PARCC three years in a row, then
there will be alternatives a high

school can offer, but they only will

be offered if you sit for the
PARCC in ninth, 10th and 11th
grade and dont pass it, Carroll
said.
He is sending that information
to parents now and in February
to remind parents this is a necessity for high school, hoping to discourage opt outs. Carroll said the
only way to prepare students for
the tests in high school is if they
practice taking the tests now.

Tourism in New Jersey isnt just about the Shore

hen you think about
tourism in New Jersey, the
first thing that pops into
your mind, most likely, is the Shore.
And why shouldnt it be? There is so
much focus on our coastline, and so
much of our lives here revolve around
the summertime rush to the beach.
But there is so much more our state
has to offer, and these other offerings
are on display front and center during
October.
Farms in New Jersey are popular
places for what has come to be known
as agritourism a booming industry
that involves any agriculturally-based
operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm. New Jersey is the Garden State for a reason, and there are
multiple farms in many places

throughout our state, both in more

rural places and in not-so-rural places
as well.
According to the state Department
of Agriculture, New Jersey ranks
ninth in the nation in agritourism,
bringing in more than $18 million per
year.
As farms look for new ways to grow
revenue, they not only look for secondary crops but also toward runoff revenue streams from traditional
tourism areas such as apple and

mazes and farm tours.

October in New Jersey is one of the
best months to visit a farm. Apples are
ready to be plucked off the trees and
eaten raw or baked into delectable
pies. Pumpkins and gourds are ready
to be picked from the ground and used
as decorations for Halloween-inspired
themes inside and outside houses.
And farm stands are vibrant with fall
wreaths, hay, scarecrows and apple
cider.
Farming is such an important sector of our states economy and our
states image. So put on a pair of jeans,
grab a hoodie and head to a local farm.
If you havent experienced agritourism in New Jersey yet, October is
the best month to do it. Enjoy the season!

upgrades for the IMMS; upgrades and replacements of the electrical mains on the
roof at Indian Mills School; and ATC upgrades to digital controls at both schools.
The parking lot and well pit upgrades are

the only two projects most likely not eligible for the 40 percent back.
The district is looking to go out for 15year bonds with a targeted interest rate of
3 percent.
A tentative timeline has the public vot
on the bond referendum on March 14. If approved, design and construction documents would be made beginning April to
November, and construction beginning in

the spring or summer of 2018.

If the projects come in under the
amount approved for the referendum, the
schools can either increase the scope of the
projects or can return that money to the
taxpayers, Archer said.
The Board of Education unanimously
approved the bond referendum projects.

share some of that with you,

Cattani said.
Looking at the LRHSD mission
statement, to develop physically
and emotionally healthy students
who excel in an ever-changing
world, there are a number of
ways by which the district tries to
achieve that goal. At the BOE
meeting, the principals focused
on the part that says creating
partnerships with families and
community in a secure, challenging and energizing environment.
The schools gave back in many
ways, including food assistance,
awareness and support, donations for the holidays, community
clean ups, No Place for Hate initiatives and activities, honoring
veterans, clothing drives and activities for kids. Cattani said students, not the teachers or administration, are leading the charge.
For food assistance, students
have adopted a family, volunteered at soup kitchens and collected donations for food banks.
Campbell said students also help
families struggling inside of the
LRHSDs own buildings, especially during the holidays, to provide
food.
The students are passionate
about spreading awareness and
giving support for the prevention
of a variety of cancers, diseases
and conditions that affect their
community. They do walks,
games and other activities that
are not only fun, but also informative. Campbell said more than
$27,000 was raised last year for

cancer research through these activities. They also give back to

local organizations such as the
Ronald McDonald House and
Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Cattani spoke of how students
are also reaching internationally
with Give Kids the World Village,
a 79-acre nonprofit resort in Central Florida that provides weeklong, cost-free vacations to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families from around
the world. Each LRHSD school
has participated at least once
with the organization. Students
help the children and families
have a good time through volunteering.
Together, the LRHSD donated
more than 900 pints of blood last
year and, as each donation has
the potential to save three lives,
the LRHSD had the potential to
help 2,700 people, Campbell said.
The blood drives have received
recognition for the amount of
blood donated in the past.
For the holiday season, $12,400
was raised to give families a
chance to have holiday cheer.

Some 1,500 presents were donated

by students and faculty.
You cant walk down the main
hallway of the office at the
schools during the holiday season
because of all of the presents,
Cattani said.
The schools have collected
193,875 pounds of
clothing
through various drives.
Students also work to create
connections and be role models
for the younger elementary
school students of the sending
communities by doing a number
of safe, fun and educational activities with them.
The giving back is non-stop,
Campbell said.
Though many students come
up with ideas on their own, the
district provides students with
learning opportunities on how to
give back to the community. It
holds an annual job fair with
service opportunities and provide
students of the district a service
opportunities

Both principals said there is so
much more LRHSD students and
