1 EXPLANATION OF TEST MODES

1.1 Pin Injection Tests
Pin injection tests are primarily for damage assessment and involve the injection of transients directly
into EUT interface circuits. Levels are defined as open circuit voltage or short circuit current without
any load. In the test set-up the true values of voltage or current are given by the load.
Prior to testing or at regular intervals (2 years) the waveshapes have to be verified (calibrated) as
defined in the EMC-PARTNER verification report. During the test process no waveform
measurements have to be performed.
Test-Procedure for Pin Injection :
The waveform is applied directly to the designated pins of the EUT connector, usually between each
pin and case ground. The EUT is normally unpowered. Set the generator to the voltage or current
according to the test level. Monitor the voltage waveform at the U-CRO output of the generator for
signs of unexpected changes.

1.2 Cable Bundle Tests

Cable bundle testing is a technique where transients are applied by cable induction or ground
injection.
The test must be performed on fully configured and functioning equipment complete with
interconnecting cables and interface loads. Levels are defined as measured values in the test setup. Either the test level or the limit value has to be reached.
Prior to testing or at regular intervals ( 2 years ) the waveshapes have to be verified (calibrated) in the
calibration loop as defined in the EMC-PARTNER verification protocol.
Cable Induction : Waveform 1 is injected using the cable induction method. The CN-GI-CI coupler
allows also to inject waveform 5A and 5B by cable induction method.
The waveform is induced through the coupling transformer CN-GI-CI into interconnecting cables and
power leads. Set the generator to the voltage or current according to the test level. In the test set-up
measure the voltage at the calibration loop of the CN-GI-CI and the current in the cable bundle.
Increase the generator output until the test level or the limit is reached.

Ground Injection : Waveshape 4 and 5 are injected using the ground injection method.
The waveform is applied between the EUT case and the local ground plane after the EUT has been
isolated from the local ground plane. The injected waveform is forced onto cable shields and any other
return path to the local ground plane. Set the generator to the voltage or current according to the test
level. In the test set-up measure the voltage between EUT and local ground plane and the current in
the cables. Increase the generator level until the test level or the limit is reached.

4 CABLE BUNDLE TESTS, SINGLE STROKE, TABLE 22-3

Test-Procedure for cable bundle tests :
Cable Induction : Waveform 1 is injected through the cable induction method. The CN-GI-CI coupler
allows also to inject waveform 5A and 5B by cable induction method.
The waveform is induced using the coupling transformer CN-GI-CI into interconnecting cables and
power leads. Set the generator to the voltage or current according the test level. In the test set-up
measure the voltage at the calibration loop of the CN-GI-CI and the current in the cable bundle.
Increase the generator output until the test level or the limit is reached.
Ground Injection : Waveshape 4 and 5 are injected through the ground injection method. The
waveform is applied between the EUT case and the local ground plane after the EUT has been
isolated from the local ground plane. The injected waveform is forced to cable shields and any other
return path to the local ground plane. Set the generator to the voltage or current according to the test

Test-Set-up MIG0600MS or MIG0600SS:

Connect the generator with the 1 meter twisted MC cable to the coupling transformer CN-GI-CI. Insert
the cable bundle into the coupling clamp. Set the current to the nominal value and apply one pulse.
Increase the current setting until you measure the desired current in the cable bundle. Measure the
test-current in each cable bundle with a current-probe.
For cable bundles longer than about 2 meters the voltage limit is reached before the test-current, so
you have to monitor the voltage at the coupling clamp monitor loop (one turn output) to ensure not to
exceed the limit voltage.

Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 can be reached for every load. Monitor the voltage to ensure not to excess the
limit- voltage. To reach the test-current without exceeding the limit-voltage, the cable bundle has to be
shorter than about 2 meters.
Remarks:
For level 5 the rise-time in the calibration loop is 12 s
For a 2 meter cable bundle the voltage waveshape is about 4/20us.

Test-Set-up with MIG0618SS:

Connect the generator high with 4 x 1 meter green MC cable and the low with the 4 x 1 meter black
cable to the coupling transformer CN-GI-CI. Insert the cable bundle into the coupling clamp. Set the
current to the nominal value and apply one pulse. Increase the current setting until you measure the
desired current in the cable bundle. Measure the test-current in each cable bundle with a currentprobe.
The output voltage of the generator can reach 3200 V, so you have to monitor the voltage at the
coupling clamp monitor loop (one turn output on the rear side of the CN-GI-CI transformer) to ensure
not to exceed the limit voltage.

Test-Set-up MIG0600Ms or MIG0600SS:
Connect the generator with the 1meter twisted MC cable to the CN-GI-CI. Connect the CN-GI-CI with
a low impedance connection ( 4 times 1meter twisted MC cable in parallel ) to the EUT. Connect High
to the isolated chassis and Low to the local ground. Set the current to the nominal value and apply
one pulse. Increase the current setting until you measure the desired current in the cable bundle.
Measure the test-current in each cable bundle with a current-probe.
For cable bundles longer than about 3 meters the voltage limit is reached before the test-current, so
you have to monitor the voltage between the EUT chassis and the local ground with a HV-Probe to
insure not to exceed the limit-voltage.

Equipment:

Warning : Due to the isolated EUT ground in some test set-up a current can flow through the ground
injection coupler CN-MIG-GI. For this test set-up the current has to be below 32A ac or dc.

Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 can be reached for every load. Monitor the voltage to ensure not to excess the
limit- voltage. To reach the test-current without exceeding the limit-voltage, the cable bundle has to
be shorter than about 3 meters
Level 5 can only be reached for cable bundles shorter than about 1meter and 10mm2
For level 5 use MIG0618SS
For a 3 meter cable bundle the voltage waveshape is about 1/16us.
Test-Set-up MIG0618SS:
Connect the generator high with 4 x 1 meter green MC cables and the low with the 4 x 1 meter
black cables to equipment under tests. For customised connection use the 8 connectors delivered.
For cable bundles longer than about 1.5 meters the voltage limit is reached before the test-current, so
you have to monitor the voltage between the EUT chassis and the local ground with a HV-Probe to
insure not to exceed the limit-voltage.

Warning: Due to the isolated EUT ground in some test set-up, a current can flow through
the generator. To avoid damaging the generator this current must be below 20A a.c. or d.c.

5 CABLE BUNDLE TESTS, MULTIPLE STROKE, TABLE 22-4

22-4 Multiple Stroke. The multiple stroke event includes a first full level transient followed by 13
transients on half level. The transients are randomly distributed over a period of up to 1.5s with a
spacing between 10ms and 200ms.This pattern is stored as Pattern 12 in the pattern generator. For
other patterns see manual.
Test Procedure, Test-Setup and Calibration are the same as for Single Stroke. Apply a minimum of
10 multiple stroke events in each polarity.
Amplitude Tolerances : First Stroke : -0/+20% , Subsequent : -0/+50%

Generator set-up:
MIG0600SS : set nominal current for first stroke, choose Trigger-mode-man and press RUN
MIG0600MS: set nominal current for subsequent stroke, choose Trigger-mode=auto and press
RUN
Test-Set-up:

Warning : Due to the isolated EUT ground in some test set-ups a current can flow through
the ground injection coupler CN-MIG-GI. For these test set-ups the current has to be below 32A a.c or
d.c.

6 APPROXIMATION OF SELF INDUCTANCE

The self inductance can be calculated for different cable layouts as showed below. With the calculated
self inductance the maximum level can be found where the MIG0600MS generator or the MIG0600MS
with EXT can be used.

6.1 Wire above ground plane

Example:
Height h =0.1m
diameter of the wire d = 2.5 mm
Lext. = 1.02 H

6.2 Two round wires

Example:
One wire
Height h =D/2 =0.05m
diameter of the wire d = 2.5 mm
Lext. = 0.87 H

20.01.05

Both wires
Height h = D/2 =0.05m; D = 0.1m
diameter of the wire d = 2.5 mm
Lext. = 1.75 H

6.3 Rectangular ground straps

Observe that the inductance does decrease with increasing width and increasing with increasing
length.

6.4 SAE ARP5415 Approximation

The short circuit current on the wire bundle or shield is:
i = l/L (v dt) V t / L
i = short circuit current, in Amperes
L = the self inductance of the wire bundle (typically 0.5 H per meter times the length of the bundle)
t = time, in seconds
V = in volts
The voltage on a shielded core wire where the shield has a 360 connection to the backshell is:
v iR
If the shield is terminated in pigtails then an additional voltage should be included as:
Vp = L di/dt
where:
L = the total inductance of all pigtails (typically 1 nH per millimetre times the total length of pigtails)
di/dt = the peak current rate of rise
Rate of rise Imax / t rise
W1 level SS = 3200 / 6.4 10-6 = 500 106 A/seconds
W1 level SS = 3200 / 0.1 10-6 = 32 109 A/seconds
Example: W2 0.1/6.4 s L= 0.5 H
V = 32 109 0.5 10-6 = 16 kV
Example: W1 6.4/70s L= 0.5 H
V = 500 106 0.5 10-6 = 250 V

6.5 Generator output voltage approximation for waveform W3

The minimum cable length can be not shorter than the coupler e.g. CN-MIG-BT1 60 cm
Example W3 1MHz Level 5 single wire
V = 2f x L I = 6.28 x1 106 0.9 10-6 640A =3.6 kV

Example W3 1MHz Level 5 cable bundle

V = 2f x L I = 6.28 x1 106 0.9 10-6 640A =2 kV

Example W3 10 MHz Level 5 cable bundles

V = 2f x L I = 6.28 x10 106 0.5 10-6 640A =20 kV !!!
The test voltage of 3200 V will be reached before the current limit
