Lesson Title: Physical Appearance- Descriptions

Duration: 60-90 mins


. Objectives of Lesson:
The objectives for this lesson are students learn different ways to describe peoples appearance using
hair style, age, and body shape. This lesson will provide students with a wide range of adjectives and
expressions they can use on a day to day basis. For a language extension students will be taught how to
describe age by saying mid-twenties, late forties and early teens, elderly, young, middle aged, etc.
. Introduction of todays Lesson:
Using a made up Wanted ad tell students you received some scary mail yesterday and you are very
worried. Take out a letter from an envelope and read a story about a crime committed last week. The teacher
should be as serious as possible so the students become more and more interested. Finally take out a picture of
the criminal and read the description of him/her. The description should include all the language that will be
taught in todays lesson. For example: hair style, age, body etc

Letter and Wanted Ad
A4 paper
Picture and Description Cards
List of example questions
. Getting Started/ Warm-up activity:
Give half of the students a picture
Give the other have short descriptions
Tell the students they have to find the person that matches their description. To do this they need to ask
questions like Do you have short hair?, Are you skinny? etc.
Students can be given a list of example questions to use to complete this activity.
. Guided practice (students & teacher):
Give students handout from Oxford Picture Dictionary
Review the vocabulary and target language
Show students a ppt slide of 6 different pictures. Ask the students to describe their hair style, age,
and body shape.
. Closure and expectations:
For this activity students will use the new language they learned to create their own Wanted ads.
These ads will be displayed to show the students work.
Review the example of the ad used earlier.
Point out to students they should use as much detail as possible to describe their criminal.
Give students a piece of white A4 paper to draw and write on.
Tell students they should do a rough draft of their description and have a teacher proofread it before
writing on their good copies.
Students should make their posters as creative as possible by coloring their drawing and using neat,
easy to read writing.
