Learn to do it yourself
at new Eggplant Festival attraction
Welcome
Fodder growing, no-knead bread and make your own laundry soap will be part of the DIY Fair.
By Martha Garcia
If youve always wanted to learn how to create a beautiful flower arrangement, grow your own citrus, raise chickens in your
backyard, or even learn to spin yarn, then you wont want to miss a new attraction at the this years Loomis Eggplant Festival. The
DIY Fair just one of the many activities at the Saturday, Oct. 1, community event taking place at the Loomis Depot will feature
demonstrations, classes, and information and products.
Christine Hebard-Summers, DIY Fair committee chairperson, said the fair adds an element of the towns history, its agricultural
roots, to the Eggplant Festival.
A lot of people want to do things themselves get back to the simple things, and the DIY Fair is one way to expand the Eggplant Festival and draw more visitors, she said.
The demonstration by the Heaven Scent Flower Company will feature an arrangement with an eggplant as a base, Foothill Feed
and Gift will give the talk on backyard chicken raising, and Boy Scout Troop 12 will give a demonstration on simple knot tying. Bakers
Nursery will show citrus tree care, and Pierce Farms will talk about navigating farmers markets, and Truly Random will demonstrate
vintage furniture restoration.
Hebard-Summers said that in booths surrounding the demonstration tent, festival attendees can watch yarn spinning by Lorna
Ingram, pottery throwing by Jen Hendricks, and learn about growing fodder animal feed hydroponically by the Red Neck
Donkey Ranch.
Dont miss Del Oro High School FFA students in action as they demonstrate dairy goat milking and breeds. They will also have
products made from milk, plants from the high schools greenhouse, information on aquaponics and more farm-based items.
And to show another way to get back to how things were done in the good old days, the Loomis Basin Congregational Church
will demonstrate quilting on an old treadle sewing machine, one that operates by foot power and absolutely no electricity.

Student farmers
Eggplant flourish in Loomis summer
By Martha Garcia
Anyone who has wondered whether eggplant actually grows in Loomis need only drive by Loomis
Grammar School, where 90 plants laden with eggplant are growing tall and lush in the front
garden facing Taylor Road.
Through the efforts of various individuals and groups, late last May first-grade teacher Jennifer Tverberg, first-grade parent and garden docent Linda Geersten, and seventh-grade teacher Andrew Coppola
directed students to the school garden where Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce executive director
Jenny Knisley had a pick-up bed full of eggplants ready to go in the ground. The garden beds had been
prepared by Coppola, the Geersten family and Tverberg, and funding for the project was made possible in
part by a grant from Soroptimist International of Loomis Basin.
The students planted nine different varieties of eggplant including Rosa Bianca, Pingtung Long,
Little Finger, Kermit, Green Goddess, Ichiban, Fairy Tale, Antigua and Bambino Cloud Nine selected by
Auburns Eisley Nursery to grow in Loomis.
Not worried about getting their hands dirty, the young gardeners dug into the fresh earth to make a
hole just the right size for the eggplant. With the help of buddies from the seventh grade, they carefully
planted one eggplant after another until all were in the ground and ready for a big drink of water.
Volunteers tended to the plants throughout the summer, keeping the garden in shape by pulling
weeds, fertilizing and irrigating to make sure growing plants were well fed.
In mid-September Mrs. Renee Zimmermans second-grade class which included most of the
students who had helped plant the eggplant as first-graders were able to see the fruits of their labors
when they picked some of the vine-ripe eggplant.
Student Erin Stone understands the principle of raising a garden, explaining that the eggplant had
grown so large because they got lots of sun and water. However, hell have to rethink his idea that They
need really hot water in the winter.
Fellow student Morgan Shaver couldnt get over how big the plants and eggplant had grown, describing the fruit as really cool. And Logan Boice, also a second-grader, has newfound knowledge of how
eggplant is grown. I didnt know, Logan said.
During the Loomis Eggplant Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1, the eggplant will be given away, while
supplies last, at the Grammar Schools booth promoting their Harvest Festival.
