Question -1

500

Q1. Draw the Thevenins equivalent circuit

(VZ = 6 V, RZ = 0).
15 V

IZ

Vz

1 k

Solutions:
For firing the diode:
15 RL || 1k
6
RL || 1k + 500
RL || 1k 333.33
RL 500 .

333.3

10 V

The diode is not fired:

15 1k
VTh = 10 V ,
1k + 500
=
RTh 1k ||=
500 333.3 .

Q1. A full-wave rectifier dc power supply using two Si-diodes and a capacitor filter
(C = 47 F) is connected to a 2.2 k load. The center-tapped transformer
connected to it has a specification as 10-0-10 V, 50 Hz.
a) Calculate the rms value of the ripple voltage across the load.
b) Calculate the power rating of the diodes and the load resistor.
c) Draw the output voltage variation across the load clearly showing the minimum
and maximum levels.
Q2. A 6 V, 500 mW Zener diode with a series resistance of 330 is used to design a
regulated power supply. The input voltage can vary between 12-18V. Consider that
the minimum Zener current cannot be smaller than Izmax/10.
a) Calculate the range of the load that can be used.
b) Calculate the minimum power rating of the series resistor.
c) Calculate the voltage regulation for the above load range if RZ = 10 .
