Assignment Sheet No.3
1. A pillar crane has a circular base of 750 mm diameter, which is fixed to the concrete base by four
bolts, equally spaced on the pitch circle of 600 mm diameter. The bolts are made of steel 40C8 ( y
=380 MPa) and the factor of safety is 5. The maximum load is 50 kN, that acts at a radius of 750
mm from the axis of the crane. Determine the size of the bolts.
2. A vertical square threaded screw of 70 mm mean diameter and 10 mm pitch supports a vertical
load of 50 kN. It passes through the boss of a spur gear wheel of 70 teeth, which acts as a nut. In
order to raise the load, the gear is turned by means of pinion having 20 teeth. The mechanical
efficiency of pinion and gear drive is 90 %. The axial thrust on the screw is taken up by a collar
bearing having mean radius of 100 mm. The coefficient of friction for the screw and nut is 0.15 and
that for the collar bearing is 0.12. Take safe bearing pressure value as 12.4 MPa. Determine (a)
The torque that is to be applied to the pinion shaft (b) The height of the nut.
3. A single start square threaded screw has mean diameter of 44.45 mm and pitch of 22.22 mm. The
coefficient of friction of screw is 0.10 and collar friction is negligible. Find the horsepower required
for the screw to raise a weight of 13.33 kN at the rate of 6.096 m/min.
4. A square-threaded power screw with single start thread is used to raise a load of 111 kN. The
screw has a mean diameter of 25 mm and four threads per 25 mm. The collar mean diameter is 38
mm. The coefficient of friction is estimated as 0.1 for both the thread and the collar. (i) What is the
major diameter of the screw? (ii) Estimate the screw torque required to raise the load (iii) if collar
friction is eliminated, what minimum value of thread coefficient of friction is needed to prevent the
screw from overhauling?
5. A vertical double start square threaded screw of 100 mm basic diameter and 20 mm pitch supports
a vertical load of 20 KN. The nut of the screw is fitted in the hub of a gear wheel having 80 teeth
meshing with a pinion of 20 teeth. The axial thrust on the screw is taken by a collar bearing 250
mm outside diameter and 100 mm inside diameter. Assuming collar as truncated conical pivot type;
find the minimum diameter of the pinion shaft and height of the nut. Co-efficient of friction for the
vertical screw and nut is 0.15, and that for collar bearing is 0.2. Permissible shear stress for the
shaft material is 56 N/mm2. Allowable bearing pressure is 1.4 N/mm2.
6. A pipe carrying steam at 3.5 MPa acting over a flat plate of effective diameter of 430 mm which is
used to cover the end. How many M 39 x 1.5 bolts must be used to hold the cover on if the
allowable stress in bolt is 25 MPa? Neglect initial tightening force on the bolt.

7. A machine weighing 24 kN is to be raised by a single start threaded 50 mm basic diameter, 8 mm

pitch, screw jack, at a maximum speed of 600 meters/min. If co-efficient of friction of the thread is
0.12, determine the power required to lift the machine. The thrust collar of the screw has inside
diameter of 30 mm and outside diameter of 60 mm. The co-efficient of friction is 0.1.
8. A quadruple threaded Acme power screw has a load of 4.45 kN, a major diameter of 25.4 mm, and
has a pitch of 5 mm. The mean diameter of collar is 50.8 mm, a thread and a collar coefficient of
friction of 0.12. Determine the torque required to raise the load.
9. A steam engine of effective diameter 300 mm is subjected to a steam pressure of 1.5 MPa. The
cylinder head is connected by means of eight bolts having yield strength of 350 MPa and
endurance limit of 250 MPa. The bolts are tightened with an initial preload of 2 times that of steam
force. A soft copper gasket is used to make a leak proof joint. The stress-concentration factor is 2.8
and take factor of safety of 2. Determine the size of the bolts.

10. In the clevis shown in Fig.1, find the minimum bolt diameter and the minimum thickness of each
yoke that will support a load P = 63 kN without exceeding a shearing stress of 83 MPa and a
bearing stress of 138 MPa.

11. The 20 mm diameter bolt fastens two wooden planks together (Fig.2). The nut is tightened until the
tensile stress in the bolt is 150 MPa. Find the smallest safe diameter d of the washers if the
working bearing stress for wood is 13 MPa.
